I've recently been doing a bit of prodding at CritterFilter and looking at mobs average Melee attack for each CR. Turns out that after level 4-5 AC starts to really lag behind....

So I'd like to come up with ways to optimize avoiding being hit/taking damage (besides just AC)

For example:

Cloak of Displacement, Major offers a 50% miss chance for 50,000 gp. (lesser version is 24k)

The Blink spell has a 50% miss chance (but you also take a 20% miss chance)

Are there any feats, races, class abilities, etc that let you avoid being hit?

Let's hear what ya got!

Classes:

Blink, Greater -- SpC, Wiz/Bard 5th, Same as Blink, but no 20% miss chance for you
Blur -- SRD, Wiz/Bard 2nd, 20% miss chance (concealment)
Displacement -- SRD, Wiz/Bard 3rd, 50% miss chance (NOT from concealment)
Mirror Image -- SRD, Wiz/Bard 2nd, Miss chance % depends on how many images (1d4 + 1 per 3 CL)
Mirror Image, Greater -- PHB2 (p120), Wiz/Bard 4th, Like Mirror Image, but an Immediate action and 1 additional image is created each round, up to max of 8 images total
Invisibility -- SRD, Wiz 3rd, Grants total concealment (50% miss chance) if they can not see Invisible creatures. See Greater Invisibility as well.

Stacking:
Per Rules Compendium p.34, miss chances from any source do not stack. In addition it states that Incorporeal is a miss chance and thus does not stack with Concealment.

See This Post for more an older discussion on stacking.

A typical Shadowcraft Mage has a huge, unavoidable, Miss Chance.

I believe it was said that the best armor is to be out of range.

wizard substitution level to gain abrupt jaunt. an immediate action teleport

contingent spell feat to create multiple spell contingencies. at low levels pay 50g to have a contingent benign transposition cast on you to swap you for the BSF or demension door to get out of range

Mysterious Redirection (CM) as well as Mastery of the Sky (Sky Domain, RotW) are fun, too. Word Given Form (ToM) is also powerful.

Lets keep the topic to just miss chance for now, not avoiding fights, etc.

Abrupt Jaunt isn't about avoiding fights, it's about teleporting small distances as an immediate action. That means that, between when they start their attack and when they could potentially land it, you've suddenly hopped far enough away that they've got no hope of connecting. Possibly the most truely broken variant class feature ever.

Also note that "Cloak of Displacement, Greater" has a limited duration per day, while the Lesser version doesn't. IMO, I think the Lesser is better item, even before the price.

And yes, Shadowcraft Mage = 40% miss chance or so. Master Specialist:Illusion adds to that as well.

There is always the ultimate in miss chance cheese. Wings of Cover, which give you total cover, thus 100% miss chance from one attack.

Alternatively, there is the 20-50% (Blurred Alacrity and Evasive Celerity) miss chance that the swiftblade gives as part of the class feature.

Smoking weapon enchantment gives partial cover (20% miss chance) as well as the effects of a stinking cloud upon your square, while allowing you free sight.

Abrupt Jaunt let's you teleport 10' as an immediate action. It also specifically states you can't activate it against attacks you are not aware of (Invisible opponents, suprise round, etc). Still very good if you have selected Conjuration as your specialist school.

Nice work, but the real question is how many of these miss chances can we get to stack for the maximum miss chance on 1 character (ignore specific build problems)?

Now that's where it gets interesting. Its a shame concealment doesn't stack...
arg did this crappy site kill my sig too?
