In the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting sourcebook, Elminster is a Ftr1/Rog2/Clr3/Wiz20/Acm5/Epic4

In the Epic Level Handbook, Elminster is a Ftr1/Rog2/Clr3/Wiz24/Acm5

notice the difference? The Forgotten Realms Campaign Sourcebooks, along with Magic of Faerun, Lords of Darkness, and several other sourcebooks, were released prior to the Epic Level Handbook, which means any NPC with more than 20 character levels used the temporary "Epic Sidebar" rules in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. Under those rules you could advance beyond character level 20, howeveryou could not advance beyond 20 in a single class or beyond 10 in a prestige class. Each time a character gained a level beyond 20, they recieved an "epic level benefit", which was selected from one of the following:

*a level in any class or prestige class, although the character cannot go beyond 20 in any core class or 10 in any prestige class.
*+1 to any ability score.
*a spell slot above 9th level, which can be used to cast higher level spells with metamagic feats applied to them
*+1 to all of the character's attacks
etc, etc, etc

If a Character selected levels in a class or prestige class then those class levels would be listed in in their standard class block. If a character chose one of the other epic benefits above, then they instead had the word "Epic" listed in their class block, with the number next to it encompassing their total number of epic level benefits (not including class levels).

Thus, when Elminster is listed as a Ftr1/Rog2/Clr3/Wiz20/Acm5/Epic4 in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, it means that at level 20 he was a Ftr1/Rog2/Clr3/Wiz14 and he Epic Level benefits are 6 effective levels of Wizard (to the maximum of 20), 5 levels of Archmage, and four "Epic" benefits which in this case were four epic spell slots.

In the Epic Level Handbook, characters can advance beyond 20 ina core class and beyond 10 in a prestige class. Since ELminster is primarily a Wizard, his "Epic" levels were changed to epic levels in the wizard class; that is he went from having 20 Wizard levels and 4 Epic benefits to having 24 Wizard levels, which amoung other things gave him a higher caster level, bonus epic feats, and the like.

In the case of someone like Larloch, who in Lords of Darkness was listed as a Wiz20/Epic12, his EPic Level version would be a Wiz32, since unassigned "Epic" levels are always added to one of the characters existing classes.

Unlike Elminster and Larloch, characters like The Simbul (Sor20/Acm2/Wiz10), Laeral (Wiz19/Sor4/Rgr7), and the other epic Seven Sisters, all have their Epic benefits as effective class levels rather than "Epic" levels". Thus a conversion of these characters to the Epic Level Handbook rules would not involve a change in their class levels, but would only involve the normal benefits every character gains beyond level 20 in the Epic Level rules; maingly an ability score bonus every 4 levels beyond 20, an epic feat at level 21 and every three levels therafter, a bonus to all attack rolls and all saving throws equal to 1/2 their total levels beyond 20, and skill points and hit points per for each level beyond 20.

Just one quick note on the Matron Mothers of Menzo. The Whip of Fangs name has been changed to The Scourge of Fangs, and it is stated out in Serpent Kingdoms page 152. It's just a minor detail, but it would allow the builds to be a little more reflective of the published material.

In the Epic Level Handbook, Elminster is a Ftr1/Rog2/Clr3/Wiz24
/Acm5

notice the difference?

Thanksyou..

I suppose they say, the foll who asks a question is only a fool till he knows the answer... the fool who never asks the question is always the fool

thanks again Simbul
