Do you play D&D4E? Have an Insider subscription and use the Character Builder? There's a new app out today on the internet. It's called, rather imaginatively, the "D&D Combat Manager". This application can open and read the XML files that the Character Builder generates in order to provide you with a 'digital' character sheet, which can vastly simplify your tabletop gaming experience. Key Features: •Works off your D&D Character Builder character data; you don't have to import any extra data or data sources! •Connects to the D&D Insider Compendium to retrieve data so that YOU don't have to look it up! •Automatically capable of rolling your attacks and spitting out the damage dealt; no more having to add up all those small numbers! •Able to properly handle multi-target attacks, giving a seperate attack roll per target and then a singular damage amount! •Able to track your HP, and properly handle temporary hitpoints and healing! •Displays your powers in a convenient list format; click the 'attack' button to activate! •Uses the Microsoft Voice Engine to read aloud what is happening when you attack or roll a skill; turn up the volume so the DM can hear! •Automatically updates itself every time there is a new release! •COMPLETELY FREE! Get the app today, at http://www.gelworksonline.comThis application is still under development. If you find any bugs or have any constructive feedback, drop us a line at gelworkssupport@gmail.com. Your feedback is important to us; let us know how to make this app better!

I will be playing with this tonight. Thanks.
Here are the PHB Essentia, in my opinion: - Three Basic Rules (p 11)
- Power Types and Usage (p 54)
- Skills (p178-179)
- Feats (p 192)
- Rest and Recovery (p 263)
- All of Chapter 9 [Combat] (p 264-295)
A player needs to read the sections for building his or her character -- race, class, powers, feats, equipment, etc. But those are PC-specific. The above list is for everyone, regardless of the race or class or build or concept they are playing.

When I saw this, I thought it was going to be something for the DM.
I'd love to have something like this that I could use as a DM. I'd have everyone's character on my computer, and then the program would load in their passive insight, perception, etc. values, all of their defenses, etc. Same for enemies. And then it would have a neat initiative interface with nifty icons for effects that get placed on characters, etc. I could run it on my laptop and have a monitor connected for the players to watch, and the initiative screen would be on the monitor, but all of the additional combat information would be on my computer screen.
What you guys have done is really cool, but something like this would be AWESOME!

So I was playing around a bit with this today, and I really like most of it. It's pretty easy to get it to do anything I want, which is nice. Few suggestions though.
1.) Dunno if this is a global problem or just me, but the attack buttons next to every power are REALLY tiny. 2.) Is there a way to track status effects? I'd like to be able to push a button and have it understand I'm dazed and such.

The functionality you refer to for the DM is on our product roadmap; we just didn't want to hold up the 'player side' of the program while we worked on it.
Also, the status effects are on our list as well, we're just trying to figure out the best way of doing it.
Its great to see people trying the app! Keep that feedback coming!

This looks like fun!
Here's my take on some of the features: - The automated attacks work well (for the most part).
- I'd like to see the HPs recovered when a healing surge is spent (from the '-1' button).
- When the Attribute, Skill and Initiative rolls are made, the word 'comma' is voiced (minor detail).
- I like the Report and Inventory features.
- You might want to consider reducing the size of the GUI (text, button sizes, etc.). Even at max size, I lose the skill list on the right side of my screen.
For the DM features, I'd like to see something to keep track of monster HP. Maybe something like an odometer to count down the HP?
But if I may make a comment on these automated character apps, that is that players often don't know how they arrived at certain bonuses. Since most everything is automated for them, they don't have to calculate the modifiers. I think that some in-depth mechanical knowledge gets lost with these automated character apps.
Thanks and keep up the good work.

Thank you GWL for believing I need an automated tool to play this game. Does this mean a future generation of your stellar program will allow me to play, gain experience and vast amounts of treasure while doing something else (ie. going to a movie with my gaming friends)? Your website has a minimalistic noir feel about it. How frugal of you.
/snarky reply on
Instead of building a program to aid in my hobby (a hobby I enjoy playing), could you devise one that will automatically do my job, plan my career and my retirement while still allowing me to pull a weekly, bi-monthly, monthly or yearly paycheck COMPLETELY FREE?
/snarky reply off
Anyone else of the opinion that giving a program login information for your DDI raises the threat level of ID theft?
Does anyone find basic arithmetic all that taxing?
Does anyone not enjoy rolling of dice?

It's a cool app. As for above poster, this is a game. None of it is actually important. This application has no more/less meaning than the PHB.
Anywho, this doesn't seem to be done yet, but it is definitely a nifty start. Things I've noticed so far: 1. Dailys and damage on miss effects don't apply. 2. Hunter's Quarry can't be used. 3. No way to just roll a d6 (if you really want all your die rolls to be made with this).
I don't mean to complain, I like this thing, just trying to give constructive criticism. Can't say much though, I only spent about ten minutes with this thing. It's especially cool because I'm sure my DM would hate it (laptop on table and all).
