yes. But, as I'm DM'ing how can I suggest this class to my players ?

Make a sample character and show them the results. Let them borrow your CB and get a feel for it themselves.

how can I read this in the train, or my bath or where ever I want to read it ?

Now here we get into the meat of the issue - do people like the method. That's up to each of us to decide.

Personally, I'm on the fence.

I (and obviously, others) don't like this way of doing it. For the first time, I'm really dispointed with the DDI editorial and publishing policy.

As is your right.

It's not free at all. Did you forget that they hand you a bill every month?

Ok, what I mean by free is that it is in addition to already existing Dragon content, not instead of. So it's on top of other stuff. Regardless, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Other people do. It's a matter of opinion. I'm of the opinion that content which you have no need to reference when you've printed off your character doesn't need to have everything on the .pdf, so it's not a big deal. Other people differ because they, for whatever reason, really want to print off the entire class, all powers and all feats, I guess because they pay for a computer application to build characters and still make them on pen and paper? Which, to be honest, is a little weird to me, and it's the only reason I can see someone getting bent out of shape over this (unless they're a potential pirate masking their displeasure at wanting to have ease of sharing exclusive content over p2p, but no one here is that person, right?).

The whole thing is pretty dubious.

They promised us a suite of computerized game-aids with our subscriptions, but then turned around and stopped development on all but the character builder. Truth is, for what I was paying, the Character Builder, the Compendium, Dragon and Dungeon are worth it (though Dungeon was a bit skimpy last issue). Still they need that extra money, so they're going to raise our rates even though they have nothing more to give us. Casting about for some way to justify the increase (and stave off a rebellion), they've decided to "graciously" offer us content that they've already completed (i.e. not really an extra effort on their part) and that they intend to sell to us a 2nd time when it comes out in paper format. End result: My rates go up, and all I get is a less than useful preview of something I'm already planning to buy. At the same time, they get thousands of proof readers.

My question: Does this count as a down-payment on the PHB3, or am I really supposed to pay for this twice?

The DDI price increase is not tied to the release of this new content.

Introductory Pricing was coming to and end, period.

While the two appear correlated, there isn't a causal relationship here - we've been told as much.

I could just as easily see the discussion going the other way.
"Time to increase the price - we should really give subscribers a little something extra to take away the 'sting'."

"How about we give them early access to PHB3 content as a way to debut what we've been working on?"

"Terrific!"
The two only appear to be correlated, we can't know for sure if they really are - and even if they are, we can't know which was causal.

I think the first thing people need to learn is the the PHB3 content has nothing to do with the price increase, it's just another thing on top of what we are paying for, which I think is totally worth it.

Secondly, if you DO consider the preview to be the reason for the increase (which it isnt) you are literally paying a dollar or two to have the chance to play a full build of a class, half a year before it comes out with designer commentary and everything.

I don't get it, when did all of a sudden the CB become so tabboo and such a 'hassle' to use? And why is it such a big deal to have to actually MAKE a character for the psion, it's only ONE build anyway, so if you had a character you are pretty much toting around all the powers as we know them anyway.

Give people something awesome and they will still find a way to complain about it.

At the risk of belitting people's opinions, I think it's simply a matter of WotC trying to do something new/different. People fear change - and so they're being vocal about it.

It's important to keep perspective on both sides however. People are well within their rights not to like how this is being presented - as I said, I'm on the fence (though I lean toward not caring/not minding - I've seen the content, I can move on) myself.

On the other hand, this thread only consists of about a dozen people so far - and those are on different sides of the fence. This isn't a snowstorm of dissent, it's a handful of people who either:
A) Don't like the way this content is/has been presented
B) Are/were confused about the content offering
C) Both

We can't change their opinion as to A) - though we can try to educate them as to B).

Complaining doesn't make them any more wrong than you complaining about complaining does.

I have to agree with the OP.

Every article published up to this date was in an easy to use and, more importantly, easy to reference format. I like being able to look the entire class over without clicking links. I like being able to compare powers without having to go back and forth between web pages. The way it was done before worked fine. Yes, I can use the character builder to make a Psion. Yes, I can reference stuff in the compendium. Yes, I can print out a character or references from either source if I need to.

What I can't do is simply pull up the article and read it.

I'm a paying customer, so don't tell me not to complain if I don't like something. Some of us don't like this new version, so we make our complaints known in hopes that they are heard and taken into consideration when future articles are published. I'm not talking about WotC's rights to publish how they want, or what format may have been promised, or how easy something is to pirate or gain access to. I just want something that is as easy to read as the other articles.

If someone actually prefers this new format, then by all means, make your voice heard too.

Well, again, when you initially downloaded it, you had to log in, so you just clicked a link and it automatically re-directed you. Beyond the first time, why do you need to reference it?

Not telling you not to, just not comprehending why someone would need to reference it, except if you're playing a psion...in which case all the power cards are there, customized to your character's stats and implement.

If someone actually prefers this new format, then by all means, make your voice heard too.

I don't care one way or the other. I'd have been happy either way.

Yes, but what I'm saying is that the way the article is setup so far doesn't make the class any less playable. If you are a D&Di subscriber, you have access to all of the info through the character builder and compendium. Yes, I understand that the powers aren't in the article, but its all in the compendium and you can print it out, or copy and paste. And they went so far as to add the class to the CB the same day it came out.

Knowing the effort put forth by wizards to do this, I personally wouldn't complain about this to their face. And also they are still a company and are losing money to piracy, so they sort of need to keep this stuff exclusive for the time being.

+ one thousand agree with you.

It's just painfully stupid. It looks like ones can only run a psionic if he is a suscriber to the insider... $$$$

Well, that was the idea, and they made that perfectly clear. Or better put, only those with a DDI subscription can get access to the info.

Come on people, I really don't think the concept is that hard to grasp. If you have a DDI subscription, you are getting an 8 month advance preview of the PHB3, which will be usable by you.

Though I can understand not liking the format, because it's not like a book, where you can sit and easily read the whole class, and make your choices, and future choices. But if they made it a full out PDF, it would be pirated within minutes.

The links prevent that from happening.

People are well within their rights to make their critiques heard, though this is probably a good time to remind everyone to ALSO submit feedback to Customer Service in addition to posting here. WotC_Trevor will almost certainly bring this thread to the attention of those in chagre, but Customer Service is a way of making YOUR voice heard - and not just the aggregate.

WotC doesn't mind, object to, or actively seek to stop/squelch negative opinions on their forums (as long as their expression is well within the CoC).
