If they really want to keep subscribers there should be an a la carte option to pay for JUST the benefits you want. I would gladly pay $4 or 5 a month for just the builder. The Character Builder is a quality app, no arguments there. And the price increase is not tremendous. I can just see this getting to the point where I have to pay for tons of bits and pieces I don't want, just to use this tool.
And that's the prerogative of Wizards. I just might choose not to indulge them at that point.

I noticed that too. My mouse pointer is hovering over the Checkout button. As soon as I know my renew will not overwrite my current subscription I will extend. But it doesn't seem that is the case. It shouldn't actually do that - it should add time on to your existing subscription. If you extend and it for some reason just replaces, contact customer service and they will be able to make things right.

I don't think you get it. Some people never felt that D&D Insider was WORTH $8 a month for two slim pdf magazines and the Compendium. (I won't even mention the Bonus Tools because they are pitiful.)
Many people signed up when the Character Builder was released FINALLY seeing a value in the price they offered.
That means no, they didn't give it away for "free". It means WotC ADDED to a package for the same price. And guess what? It worked. Many people finally saw VALUE in D&D Insider and subscribed. I know I did...
Now that value has GONE the wayside, or it will on July 2. Luckily, my price is locked in until December and I pity WotC if they don't release another VALUABLE tool by then. Exactly what I was trying to say in my post. Bravo.
When our alternatives to your software are; A: buying grossly overpriced splat books or B: downloading pdfs, I think we can all agree what will happen.
And all you people saying "its only a dollar", If you let them hike the price for ******** previews they will see that you are a tool and a reckless consumer and KEEP RAISING THE PRICE. If we take a stand and unsubscribe we might have a chance at making it clear to them that it is unfair.
If they want to keep pinching dollars out of us for worthless crap then I will be done with them. I hope you all do thae same and bolt your wallet to your thigh. Dont let them rip you off.

The previews are just to make current subscribers feel 'better' about the price going up a few dollars. The cost could go up without any additional material or components at all.
I mean, my entertainment expenses go up all the time with no forewarning or compensation. I may have paid $5.00 for a movie ticket yesterday, but today, that same ticket is now $5.75. Happens all the time (to me at least).

Happens all the time (to me at least). That's exactly my point - everyone is doing this because too many people have the blase attitude of, "Yeah, it's just a buck or two!" But EVERYONE is doing that - banks are adding fees, grocery prices are going up, gas is rising again. And what choices do we as consumers have? get rid of the chaff that is overpriced and not worth it. To me now that is DDi. They have made promises, broken these promises and replaced them with other promises and assurances that I frankly no longer believe. WotC no longer has any credibility with me. So when this company says, "The prices are going up!" and every else screams, "It's just a buck or two!" I'm not buying it - figuratively and literally.

If this is the case then they shouldnt sugar coat it at all. if they are struggling financially and need to increase the price then just be straight up with us about it. I will not pay more and send the message that the price increase is 'ok' just for PHB3 content that is all in 'beta' and likely to be unbalanced and will change in future updates.

Petty? That's up to the individual to decide. All I know is there are usually cheaper (and quite often legal) alternatives to pricey things. The cheapest of all being stopping it altogether.
Yes, prices go up. Yes, the price hasn't gone up too much. But do I need DDI? I know I need food and gasoline, but I don't actually need the CB. Sure, it's convenient, but if it becomes too pricey and I can do without it.

When I subscribed the day DDI went to a pay model, there was no Character Builder, and yet I subscribed for a year. When the Character Builder went live, there was no price increase. I got added value with no extra cost. It was, in fact, a free tool. I expected that eventually I would pay more for the added content, and today I found out that yes, I will pay an additional 12 dollars for the Character Builder a year.
If you didn't subscribe when DDI first went live with the introductory prices, I can see your perspective. It isn't technically accurate though. You see it one way, I see it another. I've been in from the start, and I have never felt like the CB was some sort of "free bonus (yay!)" that I was getting a steal on. DDI is not itemized, so I've always just divided the number of "things" I get by the price, and that's what they're worth. The CB drove down the unit cost, sure, but it wasn't ever a "freebie." In fact, I've felt like $19.95/3 months was juuuuust about right for what I was getting.
I will probably not cancel my subscription; I might even go to a yearly one. On the other hand I might cancel, and simply subscribe for a month ever so often, or at least until they figure out how to prevent people from doing that. Things happen slowly enough with DDI that it doesn't seem like a bad strategy (plus, I read maybe 1/3 to 1/4 of the magazines at most, so if I pop in every 3 months or so it'll be like having a whole magazine of good stuff).
I buy the books anyway, so WotC will get their pound of flesh.
