You've been getting the Character Builder FOR FREE for months... I'm still wondering how we've been getting the Character Builder for free...? I actually PAY money for the CB. That's exactly why I subscribed... So telling me I get it for FREE is actually kind of a slap in the face.
I get the Magazines, Compendium and crap Bonus Tools for FREE. I PAY for the Character Builder thank you very much.
Many of us didn't subscribe until the Character Builder was released. We found that to be a small portion of what D&D Insider was SUPPOSED to be. We found that they finally had something to offer worth paying MONTHLY for.
So we subscribed.
So no, the CB was not FREE. We paid hard earned dollars for it.
You are now PAYING for previews of the PHB3 with the price increase. Thanks.

Alas, the introductory period was nice but I am happy the actual price won't be much higher. Amid the cries of "I'm cancelling!" I just wanted to say, "Thanks for not setting the actual price too high and I am definitely on board." Money well spent.

You've been getting the Character Builder FOR FREE for months, and you are ******-off when they decide to charge you a buck more a month for the software? And they give you more than a month's notice to lock-in at the introductory rate?
Unbelievable, ungreatfull, and overly self-entitled. Riight. Keep on deluding yourself. I paid for DDi and expected to get a lot more than I have. But I kept it up because I liked the character generator. I very nearly canceled when it was found out that all of the apps THAT THEY PROMISED US were not there. Do I feel entitled? You damned right I do! Ungrateful? What do I have to be grateful FOR?!? Being shortchanged? I see.
Your attitude to me is just as unfathomable as mine is to you. I don't think we're ever going to agree on this. I truly hope your faith in the company is well placed, but when the hammer falls - whether it be this year or the next - and they scrap the whole bloody thing, it will be me who saved the cash and used it for something more tangible and useful than this company's vaporware.

I signed up for DnDi so I could use character builder. I dont use anything else the service offers. I have not been getting anything for free as far as I am concerned. I have no idea what you think youre talking about. Agrred. I gave Wizards money for a service. That they decided to add extra content without increasing the price is their concern. It is not free. The subscribers are paying for it. They aren't doing me a favor, I am doing THEM one by being their customer.
While I enjoy playing D&D, there are other games in town.

DDI is a package. No part of it is free. You cannot get any part of it for Zero Dollars. So no, none of us have been getting the Character Builder for free. Now, is it cutting one's nose off to spite one's face to be upset over a dollars' increase in the cost of the whole package? Maybe.
But none of it is free. It is free when it was clearly stated that the pricing would be changed from the introductory pricing when more utilities were released. They released the Character Builder and did not increase the price for approx 6 months (July 2009). So they allowed you to use a utility for free before raising the price of the package to account for the new product released.

Unbelievable, ungreatfull, and overly self-entitled. Fine, tell me where this free version is. I would like to download it. I seem to remember signing up for this service exclusively because of the character builder. If you guys were paying that same price for the other garbage they give you then you have been ripped off. Perhaps that price they are selling the service is actually fair right now and thats why I subscribed. I would never pay that much for the other content they release. Its worthless to me.
If they really want to keep subscribers there should be an a la carte option to pay for JUST the benefits you want. I would gladly pay $4 or 5 a month for just the builder.

The CB was the only reason I signed up, but if they're using new material (Which has up to now always been part of the price) as a reason to charge more I'm not interested in paying for that. If they'd said 'Here's a price increase for the Character Builder' it would have been more understandable, but a hike for previews I don't care about?

So they allowed you to use a utility for free before raising the price of the package to account for the new product released. I don't think you get it. Some people never felt that D&D Insider was WORTH $8 a month for two slim pdf magazines and the Compendium. (I won't even mention the Bonus Tools because they are pitiful.)
Many people signed up when the Character Builder was released FINALLY seeing a value in the price they offered.
That means no, they didn't give it away for "free". It means WotC ADDED to a package for the same price. And guess what? It worked. Many people finally saw VALUE in D&D Insider and subscribed. I know I did...
Now that value has GONE the wayside, or it will on July 2. Luckily, my price is locked in until December and I pity WotC if they don't release another VALUABLE tool by then.

Added two updates to the original post:
5/19/2009 11:19 AM - The early PH3 content will not be previews are playtests - it will be the real deal, final and playable as soon as it hits the Character Builder and Compendium. More on this coming from Bill in the next Ampersand.
5/19/2009 11:21 AM - When Campaign Tools launches, we have no curent plans on raising the price.

You are now PAYING for previews of the PHB3 with the price increase. Thanks. When I subscribed the day DDI went to a pay model, there was no Character Builder, and yet I subscribed for a year. When the Character Builder went live, there was no price increase. I got added value with no extra cost. It was, in fact, a free tool. I expected that eventually I would pay more for the added content, and today I found out that yes, I will pay an additional 12 dollars for the Character Builder a year.
If you didn't subscribe when DDI first went live with the introductory prices, I can see your perspective. It isn't technically accurate though.
