I think the new edition can work fine without the DDi. Of course it can. The devs said as much at GenCon last year when they announced 4E and the Digital Initiative.
The analogy they used (as awkward as it may be) was that of a 2-disc DVD set for a movie.
Disc 1 is the movie. It's all you need. In this case, that's 4E. Disc 2 is "bonus material". In this case that's D&Di.
D&Di has been billed as option accessories from the inception. Sure, the bonus content can be really exciting, but it's all ancillary to the main content.

Ok, few questions, if this thread is still alive:
Any news on the release date? Even which quarter?
Also, I have the D&D 4e Gift set (with PHB, DMG and MM) and I don't see any codes on any of the last pages of the books or on the box itself. There is only an ad for 10 day free trial at D&D Insider...
Does anyone have any clues on this?
Thanks

These are the most up to date bits of info on the whole kit and kaboodle.

Ok, so, if my understanding is correct, the Compendium will not have a discount based on whether or not you actually own the books, correct?
