back in the 1980's, software vendors had an interesting way of making updates to their reference manuals: each page in the manual had a page numbering scheme consisting of chpater number and page number within chapter, thus page 4 of the third chapter would be numbered "3 - 4" and the tenth page in the sixth chapter would be numbered "6 - 10"; if pages 4-6 and 4-7 in chapter 4 needed to be corrected, and the corrections might spread out for 3 or more pages, the update pages would be numbered as 4-6, 4-7, 4-7a, 4-7b and so on; since the reference manuals were bound in a three ring loose-leaf notebook, it was a realtively simple matter to remove the old pages and to insert the new pages

with the recent spate of updates to the PHB 4th edition, I have found myself wishing for something similar for the PHB and the other books

as for the small "crippleware" flame on this thread, I remember how lame version 1.0.0 of e-Tools was before Code Monkey Publishing took it over:
Wizards has set itself a tall order with the design and implementation of the D&DI suite and I eagerly await its debut

As far as I know, there hasn't been any information like that provided. It is unknown at this point whether there will be a lobby similar to the ones in the Gleemax Games or if it will be forums and sub-forums.

I hope there will be a lobby as well as specific DDI forums that are accessible by subscribers only. I can't imagine having to weed through "DDI Sux0r5!!" threads just to get support for the apps we're paying for, or to put games together with other subscribers. Hmm. I may have to post a new thread on this specific topic as it doesn't fit here.

There has been discussion about a :lobby" as part of the plans.
Announcements a DM can post about open chairs if trying to fill in the party or to start a game.

Plans however are subject to change.

Any technical discussion about the DDI tools, should be made in the open unless WotC would purposefully be trying to hide broken software from unsuspecting new subscribers.

Support for the apps themselves, that would not be found from other users on the forums, would probably best be handled by the customer service website.

That is just the nature of the beast.

Is there a reason some use "i" while other use "I" for D&D Insider?

If you have ever played any online game where you meet up randomly, maybe some Yahoo game, or MtGO...most have a lobby.

The Game Table application will have a lobby where you connect to the WotC servers, and can find other people that wish to play, or games that are already in progress to join or spectate.

IIRC.

The "facebook"/"MYSpace" style site was Gleemax, and it technically ends next month, but the forums have already been reorganized to make its exit less troublesome at that time. Were you looking for something more outside of the software itself for finding people to use the Game table application with?

EDIT: Cannot find the post from WotC_DM or whomever spoke about the lobby for Game table.

Thank you very much for the update. I didn't realize that was the plan for Gleemax. Yeah, I'm used to the lobbies for game sites and such, but for a long term campaign like D&D can often be I was looking for a system where people could post something like...

Umm yeah so Hi I'm Dan and I like battles with Scorpions and I available on Friday evenings and Saturdays all day.

Okay, that's actually a joke, but some sort of searchable database where you could select days of the week or gaming styles. It's gonna be odd to invite someone to your "virtual" table knowing nothing about how reliable they are about showing up or how much they "hate it when we talk to people in taverns, can't I just hit something with my sword". The forums will work, but you have to scan thorugh them and if there's any amount of people that might take a while.

Thanks for the response Hellmute.

Perhaps they'll make a section in the RPG Classifieds that serves that purpose, outside of the quick pickup game style that the game table lobby will provide.

Edit: just saw you specifically mentions forums being ok, but not your ideal..

You may want to make a post n Community business here in the D&D forums, and ask about DDI specific meetups for Game Table, to see if a forum can be made for that purpose. It would require a dedicated team of VCL/FL/FG etc to kep it clean, but other than the existing RPG classified, it may be a good idea to have one for people to get to know the players in advance.

I think it also a great thing to compensate for a portion of Gleemax, that when you have a game thread to find players and all, you could continue to reveal your game to the community to watch it played through the forums for those who cannot use Game table, or something else, if you have interest in doing so and sharing your groups game.

That was about the only usefull thing I found in the idea of Gleemax, was the ability to share games outside of PbP. This would allow other DMs to get ideas and grow that forum and the community more via DDI and its Game Table application once the thread has served its purpose for finding players. How detailed anyone wishes to go into there game would be up to them, but would probably be some great reads for other users, as well as the designers to see what types of games people are actually playing having a story version of the sessions played.

Maybe WotC would even pay some people for the adventures to appear in Dungeon if they are good enough, who knows!

It may be archived, but there WAS a post about Game Table having a lobby, and you may have better luck finding it than I had, but the idea of another way is not a bad one.

Otherwise I think Accessdenied.net still exists for finding gamers....

DDI FAQ with details on the Lobby (updated yesterday?)

The D&D Game Table will have a lobby where you can find "chairs" in a game session (the term "chair" is used to match the term Table, but we are talking about virtual chairs of course), and Dungeon Masters can publish their game session information in the D&D Game Table and expose it to players looking for game sessions.

Dungeon Masters will be able to "lock" chairs for their regular players, as well as keep chairs open to all.
They will also be able to mix and match as needed.

So for example, if a DM wants to play online with his regular group of 4 players, but they are looking for another player that could be available at that time, the D&D game Table lobby system will allow that. The DM will have the possibility to "lock" four chairs with an access code (that his regular players can then use to directly connect to his session), while keeping the fifth chair open for any player that would be available.

At launch, the lobby system integrated with the D&D Game table will be fairly basic, but should fill the core function of allowing players to find game sessions.

We will not have, when we launch, a system to post a game early with a start time. When a DM starts a session, the session becomes visible for people in the lobby, provided the DM has set his session with at least one "open" chair (the DM can lock chairs with an access code provided to their friends, and these sessions will only appear to the players using that access code). We do want to improve this aspect with scheduling capabilities in the future.

During a game session, a DM can at any time publish a new chair, if he needs to get a new player in because another left. This does not interrupt the session, though it may take the DM away for a few moments as he or she sets up the new chair, and possibly checks the new player out before accepting him or her in the session.

Well, no matter what the product looks like as long as I can run a game with 6 people online with the characters they made 'online' and it doesn't cost all of us our first born children i'll be happy.

I've got some friends who have moved away that I really miss playing D&D with and this tool will let me do that.

By the way, has anyone seen anything in the formums about any voice subsystem in this tool? is there a chat feature? I'll have to reread the FAQ methinks.

I concur

VOIP From FAQ Show

-- [GT18] Will the game table list the players signed in and have a graphic indicating when a player is speaking (such as a speaker icon)?
This is indeed planned if the player is talking as a character. The character he is talking for will have such visual indication for the other participants.

-- [GT19] Will the only way to communicate using the Game Table be by the voice over IP?
We will also have an integrated text chat, because we are aware that not everybody can use VOIP in the best conditions. Plus, we understand that there will be people that will prefer to not use VOIP for individual preferences, but we strongly believe that in that day and age, integrated voice communication had to be part of the launch features.

-- [GT20] What options will we have available through the chat interface? Whisper/PM? Multiple personalities? OOC?
Whisper and multiple personalities (that includes a kind of OOC type identification) will be there...
for the rest, the functions mentioned are certainly envisioned, but not necessarily for launch.. We do plan to use the beta to gauge the features the community feels are missing and prioritize the next steps accordingly...

-- [GT21] Will the Game Table support sound effects?
Support of sounds effects is in our backlog, and certainly will be something we will look at closely for future upgrades (I myself have been using sounds for my own games for years now, and I can tell you that it was hard for me to have to keep that item in the backlog).

-- [GT22] Will the game table support webcams?
No, we do not have plans for launch to support webcams.
