Hi Everyone, I am about to start running rescue at rivenroar for a some real newbie players, as a newish dm i am struggling with the treasure parcels. The adventure provides 14 parcels. but recomends if you have less players to scale it down. Scaling the encounters is easy enough but what about treasure. The DMG indicates for a level 1 party of 4 remove parcel 3 which is a level 2 magic item. However turning the page the breakdown of the parcel shows this as a level 2 magic item. According to the adventure parcel 3 is a level 4 magic item.. and how did parcel 1 and 2 both get to be level 5 magic items.. I am very confused here can anyone please help and explain. I would not normally worry, except that 4ed is geared so much more around balance and I would hate to overpower the party with too much extra loot and items. Thanks

The modifying parcel chart may actually be saying "add a magic item of party level +2," rather than level 2. Also, that parcel chart in the module is for a level and a half's worth of encounters, but the chart in the DMG is for one level, so there are about half again as many parcels on the chart in the module than you'd expect.

Dude, the game's not that fine-tuned.
Give them all the treasure parcels, just the way they're listed in the module. It's way more fun for the players and saves you work.
Don't waste time on that kind of stuff; read and re-read the adventure.

I tend to agree with several of the critics.
The eight hour trip between Brindol and Rivenroar is a big-enough time waster without the survival challenge thrown in too. The Kruthik warrens were close so I let thet guys take them over as a base camp.
Also, the map was needlessly big, IMO. The hallways were too long, and the whole thing didn't leave space for the players' character sheets on my 4 X 8 foot table! I mean if we were still playing on 1/4" graph paper, it wouldn't have been a problem, but that dungeon was like over 4 feet long. On the fly, I cut the hallways down to just long enough that the rooms wouldn't bump into each other.
Also, I printed out graph paper that was 1.1 lines per inch, which bought me a little more room. Search " incomptech ."
To hurry things along, I had the Hand gather all the hostages (except the first one the PC's came too) together when the PCs' attack triggered the alarm.
The Ettercaps and captain of the guard scene in room 17 was too gruesome for my group's taste, so I dropped it.
Hey, I appreciate the work that went into it, and I did adapt it to my needs OK, but I'm just sayin'.

And where is Rivenroar castle? It's not on the map. . Yeah, was there supposed to be a castle over the catacombs? I just put a tiny 10 X 10 temple as the ground-level entrance, assuming that the castle was somewhere else.
I did not mention "Castle Rivenroar" to my players, only the "Rivenroar Catacombs."

Don't waste time on that kind of stuff; read and re-read the adventure. I read what lemonsprig was talking about as, the treasure parcels aren't listed, and they provide a blank chart that you're supposed to fill out, and he was having trouble figuring out what to hand out.

An answer on the Scales of War overview: Spoiler:
Show
Q: Can we get a copy of the Scales of War overview? --AsmodeusLore
A: From Randy's latest Digital Insider:
The short answer to this question is “no.” The problem is that we’ve mapped out an elaborate plot that covers level 1 all the way through level 30 and there are a number of surprises along the way. Those “grand reveal” moments won’t be nearly as impactful if they’ve leaked out via plot summaries and/or an overview of where the Path is going. I can assure you that the current fears about the lack of a compelling archvillain, or a logically complete structure, or major NPCs, or a real hook are all misguided. Just wait and see! Linkage

My party is just over half way through the adventure, and we are having a blast. I'd like to add my $.02 to this thread based on our experiences.
I agree with most of the above comments re: errors and omissions on the map. I just made up stuff to fill in the details (such as the missing Rivenroar Castle on top of the ruins).
A big ditto to the comment about using numbers for both the rooms and the encounters the room make up - very confusing.
We have found the rooms on the first level too small. Most of our battles take place with the PC's in the hallway or right at the entrance to a new room, with the bad guys blocking them. The rooms on the second level look to be larger (we are just getting into that).
Somebody mentioned total party kills, but our party of five is kicking butt and taking names. Interestingly, the Kruthiks almost killed two PC's (each within one death saving throw), but especially after everyone hit second level, the encounters all become easy. I even added another wave of baddies in the Rivenroar Family Crypt, and would continue to do so except I don't want the parties to get too far ahead in the XP.
All in all, it is a lot of fun. A few typos here and there, but nothing that some quick thinking can't get you around. Not to mention it was free . . .

Problem: I started Red Hand of Doom in Faerun.
Has anyone else done this? Has anyone figured out where Elsir Vale went?
I originally had placed it south of the Shaar, as recommended. Now, it seems to be gone, destroyed by the Underchasm.
Help!
