Thanks for comments guys. It's appreciated and I am happy others use them. Next week I should have some Adventure 4 maps complete.

These look awesome unfortunately I am for some reason unable to access any of the links that have been posted. Anyone able to tell me if it is just me or if the links are messed up for some reason?

Try the link below. It goes to Shadow Rift of Umbraforge maps but at the top of the page are link to the first 2 adventures.

Does this mean that part 4 is complete?

Hey I just found this thread and love the look of these maps. Very cool.

I was wondering if there are larger maps with all the tiles linked together that I could print on a plotter. I saw in earlier posts that someone may have done this, but I have not been able to find them.

Thanks for this amazing work.

I've been looking around the cartographer's guild forums, but havent found anything.

The 3rd one looks like a lot of fun. Quite the challenge. I need to completely redo the first map (from Den). I did the floor after watching a tutorial. I need to completely wipe it and start over.

I'm working my way through the Dungeon Delve book too. I've done encounters 1-1, 1-2, and 1-3. I figure it's good practice I've also gotten some much better fills and some good symbols since I made those first two maps too.

Hmm...CC3 beginners guild, huh? We'd need a catchy name though

Flag Morik_Trask April 17, 2009 8:31 PM PDT
The more I think about it, the more I think the Mappers Guild is a great idea. Smaller and easier to manage than the existing ones out there, and we could help each other with techniques.

You can get the CC3 source files I host here: CC3 Source Link

This will help show you how I make stairs. But here is the brief explaination:

1) Create as many new SHEETS as you have stair steps (I usually name them like STAIR01 to STAIR##)
2) Add the glow outer effect to make sure the step casts a shadow over the step below it.
3) Use the floor drawing tool to make small steps and assign the step to one of the stair sheets. So I usually start at the top and work my way down and make sure each step from the top is a assigned a unique stair sheet that is ordered above the stair below the next.

I recommend checking out the CC3 source files to get a better idea of doing this. Let me know if you need a better explaination.

Make no mistake I am no pro like the guys at the Cartographers Guild. I just do my best and try to improve on previous maps. I don't have tons of time to dedicate to map making for my gaming group so I try to balance how good a map looks versus how long I want to spend making a map. I'm still a newbie.

I would love to have some help making the adventure path maps. it is a lot of work for one person. If we split up the work I think it would help get the maps done much faster. I have been super busy with work, family, and house stuff (not to mention playing a few video games I have been wanting to play).

So if any of you guys are interested in splitting up the adventures to work on the maps that would be awesome. Just let me know.

I also need to completely redraw my Den first encounter, unless someone has a decent copy.

Minor change of plans. I'm working on the easy maps in Den, just to get them out of the way. I hope to have all but the first encounter (temple) and 3rd encounter (stairs) complete this week.

UPDATE: I have 8 of the 9 maps for Den of the Destroyer ready to play. They could still use a bit of detail, like debris and furniture, but they are in playable format now if anyone needs them.

Just want to make sure as I did not see any official wording.

If you get any of the JPEG maps that I threw together, import them into an Excel spreadsheet. Excel will neatly divide the map up so that it can be printed out on 8 1/2 x 11 paper.

All of Steeljaw's stuff has printed fine for me on 8 1/2 x 11 since he puts his in PDF format.

I haven't seen anyone else's stuff yet.

1st off, great work on making these maps!

2ndly, how will my printer handle (or seperate) these .jpgs to print properly on standard sized paper. What must I do?

Flag Blackivarr May 28, 2009 5:29 AM PDT
The way I print them is with good ole paint. Every PC should have it.

Open the File.
Go to page setup.
Choose your paper size, I use 11x17 but 8.5x11 will do fine.
Take off the centering to save paper.
Paint will print the map on multiple pages.
Cut em out. Tape em together. I use a glue stick on a broken down cardboard box for a firm back.
Go kill your PC's.

Have fun,

Hey Blackivarr, found out that the problem I have printing these in paint is some kind of incompatibility between the jpg format these are saved in and Windows 7 Paint.

If I open them in Vista or XP Paint they work fine, in Windows 7 Paint they compress the entire picture into about 1/2 inch of graphic in the preview and the print.

If I open the jpg in Photoshop CS and then save it back as a jpg with default save options then it opens in Windows 7 paint just fine. Unfortunatley I don't have Photoshop (had to have a friend do the open/save) so I'm not sure what to do about this problem. I tried doing the open/save in MS Picture Manager and Picture Viewer but they come out with the same problem.

The map for Shrine of Erathis/Haelyn's Home in The Temple Between (DUN 161 p 31) is missing from Blackivarr's gallery, although I did find it on WotC's site.

If you do some digging and URL engineering, you can find the map galleries that used to exist before the site "upgrade" -- some of these have untagged maps!

For example,
www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4...

is NOT the same as
www.wizards.com/dnd/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4...

You should be able to find map galleries for other issues by changing the date at the end of the URL to the last Wednesday in a month (December ended on a Holiday so I backed it up a week). If you can't find a given issue on that date, poke around for other likely dates and you'll probably find it.

... it's not even close. I'll be posting about this in D&Di General soon.

Thanks for that, Blackivarr...

Got some problems ... I think I figured them out but this may help others, and the first one you might want to look at to see if your image is scaled wrong.

Using Paint under Win XP SP3, which should be pretty idiot-proof... disabled centered, set the margins down to .5 which is about the limit of what the printer will handle, and printed AlleyRead.jpg from the Temple Between set. I'd estimate the squares about about 2/3 of an inch on any side.

Asked paint how big the image was in inches and it said 11 inches wide... counted the squares and there's 19 across, so that's obviously why the squares are too small. Should be able to just resize that and go again.

Several of the other images would not open in MS Paint, for those that have this problem, try this workaround:

Open the image in Paint.NET (free), resample it to 72dpi [Image -> Resize] (PDN thinks it's 1 dpi which is not exactly ideal ), save it as a JPEG @ 100% quality. Now you can open it in MS Paint again and print as normal.
Flag Blackivarr January 6, 2010 10:59 AM PST
I deleted and re posted Alleyready.jpg, you were right, the size was off. Good catch. If you see any others let me know and I'll resize them again.

Why not just turn off the grid in maptools? (ctrl+g).  I also use maptools and what I do is turn the grid on to line up maptool's grid with the image.  Then once it is lined up I hide maptool's grid lines and just use the ones in the image.

Thanks! they're now working nicely with the program I want it to work with.

Incidentally, there's one map missing here -- I didn't spot Sinruth's abode. That one I might be able to reconstruct on my own, though. Mentioned mostly for the sake of completeness.

Still gonna be a bit. I need to get caught up with my two campaigns before starting on these. I'm doing mine like dungeon tiles now, btw. You won't have to put them in Excel to print them any more.  They are also set up to where you can lay out a room at a time for your players rather than a battlemap (and thus give away stuff they shouldn't be able to see).

I've prepared a map of the warehouse from 'The Temple Between'. It's at full scale, and I spent a fair amount of time in photoshop getting this right!

Blackivarr, I think the scale is off on Temple Between / Grand Cathedral. Sadly I didn't catch it until I had printed it and started cutting. :P Oh well. I thought that it fit a little too easily on 4 sheets of 11x17

uh yea, that would be a bit small. I just downloaded it from the bucket and it seems fine for me. I wonder what could have happened. Thats a great map too, my players loved (as hard as it was) that encounter.

What program did you use to print it?

As with all of the maps in that series, I download them, open them in Paint.NET to resmaple to 72 dpi (PDN shows them at 1 DPI and MS Paint won't open an image at 1 DPI), save as a 100% quality JPG, open them in MS Paint and print.

I'll double check my steps, but after the resample to 72dpi it was showing only like 20 inches wide, when it should be about 29 based on # of squares.

I took it down and re did it just to make sure. Hope it's not too late for you.

D&D is friday nights, so I start printing Tuesday or Wednesday usually so that if there are problems, I notice them early. Thanks, new one looks good!

I haven't gone through this thread completely yet, so please forgive if this is something you've already adressed... do you have a collected file for each chapter?  I will either be printing them out and mounting them as you have, or using them as backgrounds in MapTool.

So far, what I have seen are quite extraordinary!  Nice work indeed!

Hey, I see that the last post was like 6 months ago, so are there any plans for the last adventure maps to come out? Not that I need them! I'm about 1/4 of the way through Rivenroar, but I was also wondering, Blackivarr, how do I print off the maps from photobucket? I'm new at this thing >.<

Looooove the way they look!
