I'm posting this because the 4th Edition of Eberron is looming and as any fan, I plan to buy both the ECG and EPG. One thing that still bugs me though is the complete lack of an update for City of Stormreach (a 3.5 Eberron book sold toward the end of 3.5) that was promised to be "converted" as it were to 4th Edition.
Specifically, in the back of the book it says:
"4th Edition Compatible Though designed for version 3.5 f the Dungeons and Dragons game, you can get FREE online updates of this book to 4th Edition after those rules are released. Check out dndinsider.com for details!"
Welp. Like the game table, the visualizer, the dungeon builder, and all the other promises that have come and gone, this one stands there also. It wasn't just you VTT zealots who are missing something.
I'm making this post because I BOUGHT this book with the promise of FREE online updates to it for 4th Edition. I expected to use it wholeheartedly in my 4E campaign (with the updates). But, months and months later, still no update. I just want to let WotC know - I and many others WILL NOT FORGET about this promised free update.
And what a better time to release it (well, besides upon the launch of 4E when it was promised...)? Eberron's around the corner. City of Stormreach would be a nice place to launch a new campaign.
Thanks.

It was a lie. It will never happen. I'd think you'd be accustomed to it by now.

Yep. It was a lie. They said the same about Elder Evils. No conversion. None. To sum up: They lied. Then they pretended they didn't and hoped no one would mention it. Now that you've mentioned it, they'll likely ignore or lock this thread. Oh, and someone will come in and tell us how they're really great, and you shouldn't hold them accountable for the things they said (in print and on their site). Now I'm going to go play on the virtual tabletop with the friends I made over their D&Di gamefinding network. Aberzanzorax....disgusted (again) with WotC.

I vaguely recall mention (on-site) that Elder Evils would be made 4e compatable. There's no mention that I can see inside the book itself though. Wouldn't mind seeing this happen; ain't gonna get my pants in a twst when it doesn't though :P. I'm still bothered that the half-orc didn't show up on Insider first (as promised); had to buy PH 2 to get a peek . Elder Evils paired with Exemplars of Evil still make great bookends for my v.3.5 collection.

Making Stormreach available when Eberron comes out would be acceptable. Even making city data available thru a Dragon or Dungeon article would be ok. Then offering free excerpts from it would partially fulfill their promise for free updates. Get some info about the city for free, but get all info (and future Stormreach content) with a subscription. Not ideal, but a fair resolution for a company trying to put out high quality while managing the budget.

I don't mind if they put just part of the update for free... I mean, after all, I'm a paying subscriber to D&D Insider. But, I do want to see this update come. And, I'm gonna make posts like this until it does. I won't forget. I won't.

Speaking as someone who purchased the book in both physical copy and PDF, but isn't a subscriber, I'd be extremely angry if they make the updates subscriber only. Assuming we ever see them at all.
First thing for people working on providing new features should remember:
People hate change for the sake of change. They usually don't mind genuine improvements, but change just because it's change and therefore cool tends to get hackles raised.
Second thing for people working on providing new 'improved' features should remember:
It shouldn't be hard for users to figure out how to turn them off if they don't like them. Just because the programmer thinks he's had a great idea doesn't mean everyone else is going to agree with them.

Last year at Gen Con at the Secrets of Eberron seminar they claimed that the update existed and had just been submited to the R&D department.
Where it was never heard from again.
Aesop had it right 2,500 years ago, "By endeavoring to please everyone, he had pleased no one, and lost his ass in the bargain".

It is a shame when we are promised things in writing and then its not followed through on, or even explained about.
