My Humps - Fergie: this song is about a well endowed female rogue, probably human. She uses her natural charms to live off guys around her, and leads a ring of smugglers that deal in clothing (recycling all the extra stuff guys buy her). She is both nimble and charismatic, which makes a nice Artful Dodger package.

Next one is In and Above Men - Moonspell

A megalomaniac human, probably a warlock, maybe a sorcerer; views others as lesser beings, and is completely intent on becoming a god.

Winter's Wolves by The Sword

lyrics Show

Can't you see what you have wrought here?
Bloody battles will be fought here

May the mountains rise against you
May the forests block your path
May your axes chip and shatter
And know it is my Wrath
I would mount your heads on the bloody spears
Outside your palace gates
And watch as crows peck out your eyes
And your cities are laid to waste

Can't you see what you have wrought here?
A curse on you and all your kin
Bloody battles will be fought here
Await your doom at empire's end
May the wivers rush to drown you
Nay the earth swallow your hosts
May the winter's wolves surround you
And rip the life from your throats

Okay this is about an Earthstrength Goliath Warden. He is fed up with his clan being held down and is preparing his people for a bloody war that is to be fought! He is brutal and has no qualms about making a show of it!

So my song is One way out by The Allman Brothers.

I imagine a tiefling bard, he's in bed with a woman of import, but also who has a bit of a..reputation. He has developed feelings for her but also knows how foolish it is to do so, as she's cheat on him as easily as she cheats on whoever she professes to give her heart fully to.

This character is a member of the Trailblazers, a band of mercenaries and freebooters with a penchant for travelling to dangerous locations. He is utterly loyal to his blood brothers, willing to follow them to the pits of the Hells and back if need be. Currently they have signed on for a campaign against the living dead and the damned, and they have all sworn to continue fighting until the war is over, no matter what the cost.

Next is another delightful tune by our dear friend, Warren Zevon.

Gorilla, You're A Desperado
Lyrics Show

Big gorilla at the L.A. Zoo
Snatched the glasses right off my face
Took the keys to my BMW
Left me here to take his place

I wish the ape a lot of success
I'm sorry my apartment's a mess
Most of all, I'm sorry if I made you blue
I'm betting the gorilla will too

They say Jesus will find you wherever you go
But when He'll come looking for you, they don't know
In the meantime keep your profile low
Gorilla, you're a desperado

He built a house on an acre of land
He called it Villa Gorilla
Now I hear he's getting divorced
Laying low at L'Ermitage, of course

Then the ape grew very depressed
Went through transactional analysis
He plays racquetball and runs in the rain
Still he's shackled to a platinum chain

Big gorilla at the L.A. Zoo
Snatched the glasses right off my face
Took the keys to my BMW
Left me here to take his place

Okay so this is about a Battle Rager Half-Orc Fighter. He is shackled to the chains of his path. He has tried to break free but they keep coming back to haunt him. He thought becoming a Mercenary would be his way out, but this has only brought on more problems. There is no way to run from the past, realizing he must face it he becomes depressed.

((side note, you sent us to Allman brothers))

An older adventurer, he's been all over the world traveling in times of war and peace, he's sought elusive wealth, sought adventure, and some glory. Though it also helped to slake his wanderlust, to see the world and all of creation during his lifetime. He retired, marrying a member of his old group, she only came to know him after some rather dark event, something he never speaks of but seems to haunt him. Something has now happened, maybe related to whatever has sent the hounds of hell baying through his mind, and he's asking her to take one last trip with him.

Let's see, I would say a Warlock/Rogue, either multiclassed or hybrid classes. He was the son of a cleric, but everyone at the monastery hated him. In a fit of rebelliousness, he made a pact with some... thing (probably a Dark Pact). This was te last straw, and he was tossed out into the streets. Now, he wants revenge.

(nice song)

What I get is the idea of a shifter tempest fighter, swinging and spinning through a battle, a whirl of blades and strikes. At the highest tempo points a dervish, striking in such a fast blur that any enemy that attempts to bring him down becomes nothing more than badly injured and terrified. At the lowest tempo exhaustion sets in, his enemies set in around him. Then as they approach a feral gleam shines in his eyes and he begins to strike them again, blades moving in a whirl.

Going to go with the Eberron setting for this one.

You are a Avenger of the Silver Flame, formerly from Cyre and of house Cannith, working against Merrix D'Cannith in Sharn. Your desire for revenge is fuled by the loss of your immediate family the Mourning, with Merrix D'Cannith excoriating your entire branch for contributing to whatever may have caused the Mourning. What you know of your family makes you believe that Merrix's accusations are unfounded, and you have long suspected that many of those Excoriated by Merrix are to shift the blame from his actions. You will not rest until your branch's "name" has been cleared.

Blue Oyster Cult - Black Blade

What I imagine is a human who managed to find, by random luck or malign direction a blade infused with an infernal being. The blade is subtle, guiding and directing him, granting him great prowess and skill in battle, feeding his body and spirit. Simultaneously the wielder wants to throw the blade away, realizing with growing horror the hold that the blade has on him. But he cannot bring himself to do it, the power of the blade is addictive and he also has realized that in many ways the blade commands him. He seeks only rest and peace, wishing that he could cast the blade aside but knowing with each passing day that he serves the blade at his side.

We'll go with a full plate paladin to an evil god.

From the ranks of soldiers in the Zhentil Keep, Khareed Darkblood lead his retinue of errants from battle to battle for the glory of Bane. He curses his half-elven blood every time his magic black orc axe burns his skin, but he is used to the pain. He has recently gained the rank of captain, and his retinue has increased in size to four scores of disciplined Zhentarim soldiers. His latest orders are to command his sergeants into searching a renegade band of adventurers who have been causing trouble for the keep, along the western edge of Cormanthor Woods. He dispatches 3 groups for the search along the border, and he himself leads a 4th group down the dangerous path that leads deeper into the elven woods where the adventurers may be seeking refuge.

Hayley Westenra: Dark Waltz- This is an Eladrin Wizard l Bard who seeks to achieve enlightenment through the art of dance. This song represents her offer to all of her companions-to dance with her and destiny, help her achieve her ascension into what she calls "the light" and to stay with her always, even through the darkest nights. She has a flair for the dramatic and often calls the dangerous adventures her company goes on as "starting the Dark Waltz".

Beautiful song by the way-very haunting and Fey.

[Verse]

I didn't hear what you were saying.
I live on raw emotion baby
I answer questions never maybe
And I'm not kind if you betray me.
So who the hell are you to say we
Never would have made it babe.

[Bridge]

If you needed love
Well then ask for love
Could have given love
Now I’m taking love
And it’s not my fault
Cause you both deserve
What is coming now
So don’t say a word

[Chorus]

Wake up call
Caught you in the morning with another one in my bed
Don't you care about me anymore?
Don’t you care about me? I don't think so.
Six foot tall
Came without a warning so I had to shoot him dead
He won't come around here anymore
Come around here? I don't think so.

[Breakdown]

Would have bled to make you happy
You didn't need to treat me that way
And now you beat me at my own game
And now I find you sleeping soundly
And your lovers screaming loudly
Hear a sound and hit the ground

[Bridge]

If you needed love
Well then ask for love
Could have given love
Now I’m taking love
And it’s not my fault
Cause you both deserve
What’s coming now

So don’t say a word

Come around here?
I don’t feel so bad, I don’t feel so bad, I don’t feel so bad

I'm so sorry darling
Did I do the wrong thing?
Oh, what was I thinking?
Is his heart still beating?

Woah oh ohh

[Chorus]

Wake up call
Caught you in the morning with another one in my bed
Don't you care about me anymore?
Don’t you care about me? I don't think so.
Six foot tall

This character is a barbarian who stands at six feet tall. He has a fierce temper, especially because when he found out that his betrothed had slept with other men in the tribe. In his anger and his shame, he decided to kill each one of these other lovers. After the deed was done, he felt that justice had been done, but his tribe could not excuse this horrendous act, and thus he was exiled. He bears no ill will towards his tribe, for they didn't know, and they were just doing what the spirits' law demanded. His feelings toward his fiancee are slightly different. While he feels betrayed, he's more hurt by her than angry. He's seeking work as an adventurer because he feels killing is all he'll ever be able to do, and maybe the killing will make him forget the terrible sadness he feels at his fiancee's betrayal.

The Night Pat Murphy Died - Great Big Sea

Lyrics Show
Oh, the night that Paddy Murphy died, is a night I'll never forget,
Some of the boys got loaded drunk and they ain't got sober yet!
As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feeling gay,
O'Leary came with the bagpipes some music for to play!

That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy,
That's how they showed their honour and their pride,
They said it was, "a sin" and "a shame" they winked at one and another,
And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died!

As Missus Murphy sat in the corner pourin' out her grief,
Kelly and his gang came tearin' down the street,
They went into an empty room and a bottle of whiskey stole,
They put that bottle with the corpse to keep that whiskey cold!

That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy,
That's how they showed their honour and their pride,
They said it was, "a sin" and "a shame" they winked at one and another,
And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died!

Well, two o'clock in the mornin' after emptyin' the jug,
Doyle rose up the icebox lid to see poor Paddy's mug,
They stopped the clock so Missus Murphy couldn't tell the time,
And at a quarter after two we argued it was nine!

That's how they show their respect for Paddy Murphy,
That's how we show our honour and our pride,
They said it was, "a sin" and "a shame" they winked at one and another,
And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died!

Well, they stopped the hearse on George Street outside some damn saloon,
They all went in at half past eight and staggered out at noon,
The went up to the graveyard so holy and sublime,
Found out when they'd got there they'd left the corpse behind!

That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy,
That's how they showed their honour and their pride,
They said it was, "a sin" and "a shame" we winked at one and another,

I actually imagine a Bard singing about the funeral of another member of their adventuring company. The funeral they ran for a friend got crashed by a few locals, and also had a few...incidents during said funeral. Their company was a rough and tumble group, and they also worked to stall things as long and possible to ensure that their comrade could be ressurected without his wife knowing, allowing him to return to adventuring and finally pursuing his dreamed life of debauchery.

He enjoys how the winter season, especially the holiday of Yule, when the Solstice Bells ring, bring people together and for at least a night or so, the world is peaceful and everyone stops fighting to eat, drink and have fun. He's on his way to becoming a Winter Sovereign, but rather than being a cold-hearted servant of the Prince of Winter, he takes on a "Father Christmas" like role, giving anonymous gifts to good people.

(No offense, Abraham, but aren't Christmas songs a tad too specific for an exercise like this? There's only so many characters you can make that exemplify the Christmas spirit before they start looking similar.)

Her kleptomania and all around instability and distrust of others could lead to being a twitchy rogue with a pension for stealing everything not nailed down.

He doesn't like to make choices, but when he does, he doesn't deliberate and cuts right to the heart of the matter. His rigidity is unnerving to his companions, especially when his draconian mindset leads him to do harsh things under the justification that they are necessary.

Hunting Girl - Jethro Tull

Lyrics Show

One day I walked the road and crossed a field
To go by where the hounds ran hard.
And on the master raced: behind the hunters chased
To where the path was barred.
One fine young ladys horse refused the fence to clear.
I unlocked the gate but she did wait until the pack had disappeared.
Crop handle carved in bone;
Sat high upon a throne of finest english leather.
The queen of all the pack,
This joker raised his hat and talked about the weather.
All should be warned about this high born hunting girl.
She took this simple mans downfall in hand;
I raised the flag that she unfurled.

Boot leather flashing and spurnecks the size of my thumb.
This highborn hunter had tastes as strange as they come.
Unbridled passion: I took the bit in my teeth.
Her standing over --- me on my knees underneath.

My lady, be discrete.
I must get to my feet and go back to the farm.
Whilst I appreciate you are no deviate,
I might come to some harm.
Im not inclined to acts refined, if thats how it goes.

Crop handle carved in bone;
Sat high upon a throne of finest english leather.
The queen of all the pack,
This joker raised his hat and talked about the weather.
All should be warned about this high born hunting girl.
She took this simple mans downfall in hand;

Oh, high born hunting girl,
Im just a normal low born so and so.

Let's see, for the guy I would guess the man is a Bard, mainly because he seems like a charming trickster than anything else. The woman, she's harder. I would say Ranger, mainly because of the hunting, possibly multiclassed into Warlord because of her nobility and she seems generally commanding.

The vibe that I get from this particular song is a cleric who is part of a religion that turns out, little by little, to be a Path of Inspiration that serves a very greedy and evil god or demon that wants to take everything away from its followers. The cleric in question is fed up with this and decides to rebel against the religion.

This character is a gentle druid who has done what many druids would find abhorrent. He has become "civilized." Whereas many druids prefer to preserve the sanctity of the woodlands and the wilderness, this druid acts as a teacher and helper for a small farming community. He instructs his neighbors on how to grow crops better and minimize their impact on the environment. He even is willing to wild shape into a strong horse to help his friends with ploughing, especially if one of their horses is injured.

Darkness is down, alive we stand, Gods' children come redeem your holy land

A bard chronicling the path of his adventuring band, near the end of their grand path. They have battled for what feels like six lifetimes to overthrow an infernal tyrant that held the world in thrall. Their battles had been bloody and full of despair, they lost many battles and saw those they had called friends or brothers fall along the way. Now though, they stand in victory, the tyrant has been beaten, the world now free of the shackles and the faith of the people in what is good and righteous has returned. They usher in a new age of light, life and hope.

I'm going to say perhaps a gnome fey pact warlock. When he made his pact, his patron instructed him to travel to an abandoned carnival ground where the patron would meet him. The patron turned out to be a childish sprite of some sort, who asked him to join her on the merry-go-round. When the merry-go-round stopped working and sent him spinning out of control, his mind was touched with pure fey energy, making him downright daffy.

Ministry of Saints - Edguy

Lyrics Show

When the lights go down you feel it come alive
Driven by the dread of love that never passes by
When the night unfolds a veil across the day
Waiting for the flood to come to wash the stains away

Look at the clouded sky
Poisoned rain, angels cry
Cracks show in the seal

Tonight a thousand angels fall
Heaven's up against the wall
Changes holding sway
We can make you anyone
By the morning we'll be gone
The ministry of saints

You're afraid to disappear beneath the waves
Bread and circus, bread and wine
They rain on your parade
Round and round and round
You're spinning like a wheel
Crying for redemption you break the seventh seal

We're cleansing your soul from sin
Plead for you, angels sing
We're taking pride of place

Tonight a thousand angels fall
Heaven's up against the wall
And change is holding sway
We can make you anyone
By the morning we'll be gone

Hoooooo boy. The Lords of Acid. God that group is creepy!

This character is a sorcerer, who becomes a Demonskin Adept at paragon levels. Unlike most adepts of his kind, who steal their power from the Abyss, he willingly serves demons and is obsessed with them. His powers manifested when he heard a demonic song in his head and was led to a beautiful demon princess that drove him wild. After six nights of horribly violent and perverted actions that are too graphic to mention here, he made a deal with his new Abyssal mistress. He sees her image wherever he goes and when no one else in the party is looking indulges his demonic fetish.

Killers of men
Of warriors friend
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers
To the end...

One day too
I may fall
I will enter Odin's Hall
I will die sword in hand
My name and my deeds will

...Onward into the heart of battle
Fought the sons of Odin
Outnumbered many times
Still

Blood poured fourth from their wounds
Deep into the earth
Vultures waited for the broken shells
That once were bodies
But Odin alone would choose the day
They would enter Valhalla
And in their hour of need
He sent forth unto them The Berserker Rage
Now gods and men
They rose up from the ground
Screaming like wild animals
Such is the gift of absolute power
No blade or weapon would harm them
They killed them and horses alike
And all who stood before them died that day

I didn't so much lose interest in the game itself as I lost interest in playing it while another person is replying to it with silly/nonsensical replies.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with humor in D&D or silly threads in general. But when I spend a fair amount of time coming up with a paragraph's worth of description for someone else's song and then my own request is met with a one-line race/class combo that's only vaguely related to the song's title and a request for a character based on a song from a Disney movie or Weird Al's "Hardware Store"... it tends to feel a bit like a slap in the face, y'know?

And I don't buy the "can't access YouTube" excuse, either. Even if you can't listen to it there, you could always google the lyrics. It just strikes me as lazy and insulting to the other players who've actually put some time and effort into their replies and expect the same back.

Jerro (a human fey pact warlock) doesn't know his fey mistress' name, but he thinks of her as the Black Queen. He doesn't know what she wants with him, but she grants him power in return for... what? Well, she's never actually asked him for anything, yet. Just the pleasure of his company at her court in the Feywild, when it's her whim to have him there. Surely that's not much to pay for near-unlimited magical power, right? OK, so occasionally she'll ask him to go play a 'prank' on someone in the mortal world who's caught her eye. But she's got a good sense of humour. Well, most of the time, anyway. When she's not in a bad mood. Jerro really, really hopes she's never in a bad mood when she summons him. And he does worry occasionally about all those poor souls she keeps chained up following her everywhere in a long, shambling line. They look at him sometimes. With mockery and hunger in their eyes, and sometimes with what looks like pity. And, sometimes, he's sure they're whispering about him, about how they were once like him and how he'll soon be joining them...

OK, what can people come up with for 'From Yesterday' by 30 Seconds To Mars? Try not to be too influenced by the video...

I'd say this character is a ranger who has spent most of his life wandering. He eventually takes the path of the Horizon Walker and later the Dark Wanderer. He has spent his entire life on the move after taking an innocent persons life. He is haunted by guilt and fear for what he's done, despite the fact that he keeps kiling as he travels. He carries a message that the person he killed gave to him, but has been afraid to read it all these years. He earnestly believes that he will never find peace. He has defined his life around the blood he sees on his hands and believes he deserves to be punished unto eternity. Reading that message may give him some closure, and the world has long since forgiven him, but he can't forgive himself.

And now for something completely different!

This song is a recording of what he began to call out as the vision twisted and transformed in his mind, most thought he was crazy. The truth was a bit more complicated, the substance he ingested also opened up his mind to possession by a twisted being of the far realm, he will be transformed into the 'Iron Parasite' a creature that will lead a horde of ravening monsters to devour and scour this world of all life and hope.

Rouge with a "feel good" attitude towards life.

You know what we need? Villain Songs.

Ignore the video, and come up with a character that fits Master Of Your Fate from Teen Titans (other than the Amazing Mumbo himself, who is obviously a bard with a multiclass into wizard-if you watch the other episodes with him in it, he displays all the personality one associates with bards).

Flag Zousha_Omenohu August 13, 2009 1:19 PM PDT
I'd say you're right about him being a multiclassed bard/wizard, specializing in psychic damage and controlling his opponents. He is obsessed with performance and art, delights in manipulating adventurers into performing twisted plays or shows for his amusement, executing them if they make mistakes or bore him. His mental instability, however, means this happens a lot. Any adventurers that have attempted to bring this madcap master of ceremonies to poetic justice have met with failure.

And now for something completely different!

Waiting For Our Time - Styx

Lyrics Show
Looking up from where I stand
I see the vapor trail
Of a jet plane in the sky

Here the wheel is in my hand
But there's no wind in my sails
And life is drifting by

Still I hold on and wait
I know its not too late
And my breeze will come

Muse you satisfy my soul
Keep me warm while the
Cold world guards the gate

I'm searching
I'm wondering
I'm yearning
Waiting for our time to come

I'm searching
I'm wondering
I'm yearning
Waiting for our time to come

Your love has kept my dream alive
A vision of my life
With you here by my side

Every forward step I take
Every moment I'm awake
I feel your love inside

So close I feel it in my bones
I know I'm not alone as I climb this wall
But I, sometimes I get so high
I just want to live, love
And taste it all

I'm searching
I'm wondering
I'm yearning
Waiting for our time to come
I'm searching
I'm wondering
I'm yearning
Waiting for our time to come

Here tonight
I lie awake and watch you dream
Under the light of the moon
I wonder just how far we've been
And where we'll be
When the sun comes up
Will this be our date with destiny?

I'm searching
I'm wondering
I'm yearning
Waiting for our time to come

I'm searching
I'm wondering
I'm yearning
Waiting for our time to come

And I'm waiting

Tiefling who just became an adventurer and turning his life around.

Keeping in line with the Villain Song, animated or not, here's Hellfire. Heck, Judge Frollo is pretty much an Eberron BBEG already.

EDIT: Or a Raveloft darklord-in-the-making. You could argue that the cloaked demons are the Dark Powers mocking his hypocrisy, and the shadows at the end of the clip being the Mists gathering in preparation for his Act Of Ultimate Darkness and following one way trip to Ironic Hell.

The Scythe - Elvenking

www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pUb7LGUyPg

On this night of Nights, She's coming my way
Under this rain, dirty with agony and pain
Mistress of Doom, winner of all fights
My glance is reflected in the blade of the Scythe

A sparkling golden sickle
Mows down souls whistling in the air
Reddens little by little
The seas of life and mankinds lairs

A fall into the abyss
Deep into agony and pain
Spiral down to the anguish
It had been all in vain

Welcome, please join the fair of failures
Enter into the hall of pleasures
Righteous the act to kill
Wasn't it one of Gods wills?

Leave behind all the trails of winter
The time has come for me to go
The fear has gone, the storm is over
And there's someone at your door

Another name to be carved
For every slash of my blade
Until the day you find
The one reflected is your face

Come, taste blood, rust and terror
Come to the show with no restraint
-It's your time!

Mother of desperation
Death of thunder and rain
Sighs and tears are all in vain
Clad in a cloak of despair
She'll take you away

Welcome, please join the fair of failures
Enter into the hall of pleasures
Righteous the act to kill
Wasn't it one of Gods wills?

Leave behind all the trails of winter
The time has come for me to go
The fear has gone, the storm is over
And there's someone at your door
Hold your ground and watch your back
With the aim of remaining the last
I asked this night for a piece of advice
This time the Scythe won't fall, keep still!

...and if you follow the trails down this winter wake
She's reaping down souls, one for every flake
Throughout the ages, through centuries
She, mistress of customs, of memories

Flag Neon_Red_Phoenix August 28, 2009 11:36 AM PDT

This is pretty much what comes to mind when I listened to and read the lyrics of The Scythe - Elvenking, I hope it's alright:

Shadar-kai Avenger who serves the Raven Queen. She wields a scythe more for symbolism than utility purposes, bestowed upon her either as a gift from her Goddess or for completing her training. She vanquished the Queen’s foes wherever she came across them, whether the meetings were her intent or by merely happenstance.

She had no complaints about the killing.

Nothing could take her down until a fateful encounter with some crazed followers of Orcus left her dead and about to be risen as a mindless, undead servant. However, before the ritual could be completed, the Raven Queen raised her as a Revenant.

After blindly dispatching the acolytes of the Prince of Undeath, her understanding of the situation fell upon her. She had failed, been killed in battle. She was now undead, albeit at her Goddess’s discretion. Was this a gift? A curse? Or, worse than anything, the Queen’s pity?

Unaging, undying, and more devout than before her death she became a far more ruthless hunter of her Goddess‘s enemies than ever before. Eventually, maybe even the Prince of Undeath would come to shake in his boots at the mere mention of her. Maybe.

This gentleman is a rogue who enjoys the nicer things in life, but doesn't really like to work for them.  He took to the roguish life not because he had a score to settle or a penchant for stabbing people in the back, but because he was a loafer.  He does odd jobs for the locals, and sometimes dips into crime, but never beyond the odd bit of pickpocketing or a courier job for some crimelord.  He enjoys a unique position as a neutral party in the ongoing crime wars of the various cartels, since he's not committed enough to stick to one particular side.  When he has gold to spare, he likes to go to the tavern for a few beers with his friends, maybe play some cards, but nothing too big or exciting.  He's so mellow it seems disconcerting to some of the jumpier criminals.

Canticle of the Sun - St. Francis of Assisi

Lyrics

The heavens are telling the glory of God,
and all creation is shouting for joy.
Come dance in the forest, come, play in the field,
and sing, sing to the glory of the Lord.

Praise for the sun, the bringer of day,
he carries the light of the Lord in his rays;
the moon and the stars who light up the way
unto your throne.

The heavens are telling the glory of God,
and all creation is shouting for joy.
Come dance in the forest, come, play in the field,
and sing, sing to the glory of the Lord.

Praise for the wind that blows through the trees,
the seas mighty storms, the gentlest breeze;
they blow where they will, they blow where they please
to please the Lord.

The heavens are telling the glory of God,
and all creation is shouting for joy.
Come dance in the forest, come, play in the field,
and sing, sing to the glory of the Lord.

Praise for the rain that waters our fields,
and blesses our crops so all the earth yields;
from death unto life her mystery revealed
springs forth in joy.

The heavens are telling the glory of God,
and all creation is shouting for joy.
Come dance in the forest, come, play in the field,
and sing, sing to the glory of the Lord.

Praise for the earth who makes life to grow,
the creatures you made to let your life show;
the flowers and trees that help us to know
the heart of love.

The heavens are telling the glory of God,
and all creation is shouting for joy.
Come dance in the forest, come, play in the field,
and sing, sing to the glory of the Lord.

Now, then: Canticle of the Sun — I see this as a cleric of Pelor with the Miracle Worker paragon path. He campaigns not necessarily to wipe out evil, but to spread happiness. And if the best way to spread happiness is to exterminate some monsters, who is he to judge Pelor's wisdom?

Garaza was a pious priest of Pelor, who had devoted his life to peace and harmony.  He had seemingly everything he could have ever wanted.  A loving wife, the adoration of his entire community and the favor of Pelor.  But unfortunately, he wasn't the best businessman, and his tiny community fell into debt.  He innocently hoped that Pelor would provide for him and his flock, but the man the village owed the debt to, a harsh and intolerant lord name Yurkis, would not tolerate anyone defaulting on a loan from him.  He had his men arrest Garaza, and he was later executed to make an example to the village that Yurkis's word was law and his law was not to be ignored.

The community managed to scrape up enough to pay the debt, Garaza's wife actually marrying Lord Yurkis to encourage him to lower the debt a bit (it worked).  But things were not the same without Garaza to serve as the moral cornerstone of the people.  Cheap liquor and drugs became common, and the people forgot about Garaza.

But then, one night, Garaza returned.  Pelor had brought him back as a revenant.  When he saw what his home had become, he was digusted.  Disgusted with his neighbors, for falling so easy to sin simply because he wasn't there.  Disgusted with his wife, for marrying Yurkis.  Disgusted with Yurkis for letting his home decay and for murdering him in the first place.  Blinded by the rage, Garaza slew everyone in the town.  He was an unstoppable force of harsh, unforgiving justice, saving Yurkis and his wife for last.  As he killed them, he felt a horrid chill.  The sun rose, and for the first time, its warmth did not reach him, and it's light hurt his eyes..  It was a sign of Pelor's displeasure.  Instead of remaining true to the sun god, Garaza had stooped to petty revenge.  Garaza then turned and saw the souls of all he had slain following him, silently mouthing accusations and questions at him.  Garaza soon learned, now that Pelor had turned his back on him, how to manipulate these ghosts to aid him, becoming a shaman.

He is wracked with guilt at the crime he has committed, and seeks atonement.  Pelor has promised Garaza that for every life he spares, one spirit will be free to pass to the afterlife.  When all have passed on, then and only then may Garaza seek forgiveness from Pelor.  Garaza works tirelessly towards this goal, his new undead state meaning he never stops to rest.

That was an interesting exercise!  Now my turn:

Verithir the Capricious is, as one might imagine, a flighty individual who refuses to remain in once place for long.  Like all half-elves, he easily forms friendships with persons of all races.  However,  these relationships quickly become victims of his wanderlust, and he has little use for laws and regulations.

He is not a malicious individual, but is also not above causing a little mischief when the opportunity presents itself.  Whether or not he travels for the joy of it or because he is searching for meaning in his life remains to be seen.

Cursed with brief flashes of memory from his dark past but possessed of a martyr-like quality that drives him to fight for the side of good. Unfortunately, the dark nature of his past life sometimes rises to the foreground, causing him to delight in the pain he brings to his enemies. He works hard to control this bestial aspect of his nature, but it sometimes feels like a losing battle.

I love the piece. It's unresting and unremitting.  I've had a character concept for Navras before, but since he's an almost-transcendent humanoid who can travel through space by magically obviating his need to breathe and generating a personal FTL-travel-field using semi-Psionic effects, I don't think he would easily fit into a 30th level D&D character...

A Tiefling might be appropriate. She is haunted both in the waking world and in dreams by the demons of her ancestry. For her entire life, they have never been silent, driving her to the brink of insanity. She spends every conscious moment doing anything and everything she can to silence them the only way she knows how--by vanquishing them. Class could be something physical that likes to move around and hack at things--melee ranger, rogue, barbarian, possibly fighter. Not Avenger or Paladin, she has no particular link to the divine. Monk and Assassin would seem too 'calm' for her. Perhaps MC'd to Warlock, as the demonic messages seep into her mind, and she can't help but utilize the very things she wants to destroy.

It's often hard to differentiate the person from the song, but I'll give it a shot.

This character is a cleric of Sehanine, who is REALLY devoted to Sehanine's teachings of love.  Unfortunately, he tends to make enemies wherever he goes because of his womanizing.  He also has very loose behavior in other areas, living the life of a hedonist so passionately that many people forget that he's a holy man.  Despite his behavior, however, Sehanine has blessed him with holy powers, and he is a good healer.  Many people wonder, however, if his talents are worth the trouble he causes.

Whenever his enemies have tried to kill him, however, he just won't die.  No one knows if maybe it's Avandra or Sehanine watching over him, or being just damn lucky, but every attempt to destroy him has failed.  Finally he fell in with an adventuring party to pay some debts he had and escape his enemies.  It remains to be seen whether adventuring will succeed where his enemies failed.

Given the event that is described in the song, I don't think making a character for either of the two described would really work.  But what about if the character was connected to them?

He was the child of these two people who both drank themselves to the grave, and was raised by relatives who took him in while his parents' lives spiralled out of control.  When he learned their story, he became a very depressed person, and he blamed alcohol for killing his parents.  He's now a drifter looking for something to fill the same void in his heart that his parents had in theirs, but he steadfastly refuses to end up like them.  He'll make a point to his party members that he doesn't like to see people drinking, and if he's in charge of the party he'll ban it.  If coaxed, he may explain why he hates alcohol so much.  The guy is in DESPERATE need of a hug.

Probably a ranger, avoiding society and the liquor that it invariably has with it.

Here's a new one from a perennial favorite:

A hedge wizard who used to perform for crowds and simultaneously rob them blind, he was eventually caught by the local thieves' guild. As punishment, they killed his wife and lit his house on fire with him still inside. As he tried to escape, he found himself bombarded by the energy from the burning spellbook that he had used to trick his patrons. Now, that power manifests randomly, and he has utterly no control over what the results may be.

Lit up the world as I fell asleep

It's hard to say that I'd rather stay
Awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems

'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs
From ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance

A sock hop beneath my bed
A disco ball is just hanging by a thread

I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay
Awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
When I fall asleep

Leave my door open just a crack
(Please take me away from here)
'Cause I feel like such an insomniac
(Please take me away from here)
Why do I tire of counting sheep
(Please take me away from here)
When I'm far too tired to fall asleep

To ten million fireflies
I'm weird 'cause I hate goodbyes
I got misty eyes as they said farewell

But I'll know where several are
If my dreams get real bizarre
'Cause I saved a few and I keep them in a jar

I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay
Awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
When I fall asleep

I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay
Awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
When I fall asleep

I'd like to make myself believe
That planet earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay
Awake when I'm asleep
Because my dreams are bursting at the seams

A swarm druid living within a city, determined to introduce everyone to the beauty of nature. He does this with happy, catchy music and swarm-form displays of fireflies' beauty.

Unfortunately, that's all I got. Anyway, try this on for size:

A Day To Remember - "I'm made of wax, Larry, what are you made of?"
