You never made a pact. You never sold or traded anything. You just figured out how it works. You studied your power source and figured out exactly how to channel it on your own. And all those other suckers are trading away bits of their soul for what you got for free. As long as the things in charge don't notice you, you're golden. And what's the chance that they'll notice one more guy siphoning off bits of their power? Pretty low, right?

Patron? Well you suppose that's you. Don't be fooled by the mortal exterior. You were a powerful entity once. But now, through some bizarre mishap your physical form was destroyed, forcing your soul to inhabit the still-warm corpse of a nearby mortal to survive, effectively ressurecting yourself. However, instead of the mortal's soul, it's yours. Your powers are but a shadow of what they were before, so now you've got to work to restore them, but they come directly from you, and not from some distant patron. The only real drawback is potentially forgetting who you were, possibly having your memories subsumed by those of the mortal you've effectively become, or by the two personalities merging to create a completely new one. And even worse, what will happen if you die "again?" Would your soul be drawn back to this body on ressurection? Would it just drift away? What will you do if you run into your body's former inhabitant?

Because, you know, it was cool, but there are these reasons (about 1001 of them, in fact) that make the cost suck so much that the power doesn't seem worth it.

You are totally invisible all the time EXCEPT for during combat, or occasions when being invisible would actually be rather... you know... useful.
Its kind of a bummer when people keep bumping into you in a crowd, or the party paladin doesn't know where to put his lay on hands on your unconscious body...

Through some fluke, twist of fate, or messed up ritual, your level literally plummeted all the way back to lvl 1. You decided to re-begin adventuring in order to get back to your former glory, whether it be with a new group or with the dumbasses that causes this mess. Your companions may be confused by your constant references to "level", "Experience points", and "That ******* DM", but such those idiot mortals will come to understand in time.
