Well an avenger could wear what he want but I think lots of you are confusing avenger with assassin.

I think "Assassin's creed style is a bit too "stealth" for an avenger.

Anyhow an avenger could act like an assassin, hiding in the shadow and striking quickly and mortally (case A) OR he could decide to face the enemy killing him in a right duel for his god sake (case B).

In case A he'll be like Altair (assassin's creed).

In case B I figure him with a sort of leather armour (with lots of daggers, throwing axe, potions ecc.. and some kind of bigger weapon on his back) that cover with a sort of tunic (mark with the symbol of his god) while travelling in an outpost (to hide his weaponry).

I recall a comic about two mercenaries/defenders of the faith called Sprititus Sancti.
One was the noble-born, pretty guy, and the 'face' of the duo, the other was scarred in the face and had to keep a low profile, doing the dirtiest and most brutal part of the job. Ironically enough, he was the most empathic of the two.

Three-musketeers-style of setting, so not a whole lot of armour going on there.
