Our first 4e party featured such characters as 'Benny Underhill', a warlock prone to extended chase sequences and 'Ani Oakleaf', a deadeye ranged cleric.
(I employ zie/zie/zir as a gender-neutral counterpart to he/him/his. Just a heads-up.)
Essentials definitely isn't for me as a player, and I feel that its design and implementation bear serious flaws which fill me with concern for the future of D&D, but I've come to the conclusion that it isn't going to destroy the game that I want to play. Indeed, I think that I could probably run a game for players using Essentials characters without it being much of a problem at all. Time will tell, I suppose.

ThiefIf you really want something sly take one of your character's most defining attributes and put it into an online Thesaurus. Follow the links until you find a word no longer used. For example, I have a character name Tea Telæsthesia. I took one of her defining features (she uses a lot of psychic type spells) and plugged it into dictionary.com's thesaurus. So I looked up synonyms to the word "telepathy." One of them was "telesthesia." I looked up that word and found the alternate spelling "telæsthesia." I recommend you try something similar.

Long long time ago, when I played with two french, there was this Bard by the name of:
Doremi de fasolasido
(which turns out to be nearly a scale of C major in french...)

My current character: Chester McSquee, a halfling feylock. The fine print in his fey pact stipulates that he must wear a squirrel costume at all times. Good thing the armor fits over it.

2. Shuriken Nekogami (Deceased Adolescent Human rogue, she will return during my dm's next campaign, her first name means throwing star, her last name means cat god, when i first created the freeform char 10 years ago, i thought it meant shooting star of the cat god.)
3. Dimitri Molotova (my current character, a male unseen seer who performs sneak attacks with the acidic splatter feat. his acid is a blue cold corrrosive liquid. sounds like a russian tennis player.)
4. Sylvie Schwartz of the Twin daggers and her raven "Bruder" (human daggerspell mage, 17-19 year old female human)
5. Einhammer (male dwarf cleric of moradin, his name literally means, "A Hammer")
6. Egon (human knight/fighter/paladin/hellreaver specialized in the guisarme, his name sounds like Igor)
7. Ulgar "The Horrid" (2hand power attacking dwarf fighter, his name sounds like Hagar "the horrible" he wore platemail and carried an oversized axe [not monkey grip oversized, but 2hand sized])

Actually happened in a game, an NPC had a name that we realized was a bit off.
Pronounced "Ah-shot"
Spelled Asshat.
Yeah.
Also a favorite, use your own name, but make it into a title.
Example, if your name is John Smith, call your character Lord John of Smith.

In one game, I have a human fighter named Pythagoras "One-eyed Piet" Thompson.
Otherwise I DM and have many odd NPC names, although I base them mostly on real names. My PCs are the brothers Torix and Constantine van Rijn. Mercenaries, they are.

In one of my monthly Meetup games, we played through a module with an NPC whose first name was Mylon, last name started with an S, I forgot exactly what. With another group pretty loud nearby, we didn't catch the proper name, and one of the players said, "Mylong *******"? The name stuck. Even though our age group seems to be mostly 30s to 50s, we're all immature at heart, and broke up laughing every time the name was mentioned. It didn't help that one of the other players drew a quick facial caricature of a man with drooping, rounded jowls. At least one full hour cumulative was wasted that session on people laughing too hard to concentrate on the game. I know one player fell out of his chair at one point in time. Monty Python's Election Night Special has some exceptionally silly names, too. Tarquin Fin-Tim Lim-Bim Whim-Bim Busstop F'tang F'tang Ole Biscuitbarrel is my favorite. Someday I'm going to make a cleric named Wizard.
