I was always fascinated with Ravenloft. I don't know that Strahd's mother and the Raven Queen are one and the same, but in my world they are.

For those it may concern:
Since when is ritual scarification emo? There are many cultures where that is a sign of adulthood.
Plus, a scar tatto looks utterly cool, and it says a lot about the individual:
"Yeah, I went through a painful, drawn-out procedure as a coming-of-age ritual to show my tolerance for pain, and I succeded. You got a problem with that?"
Also, I think that the shadar-kai would probably kill you if you said they were emo. They would kill you anyway, but you would make it personal.

Why is that? Goth chicks are cute and all, but they're not really my thing. Goths and it's sub-cliques are at least a good 50-75% of DnD players IMO. Especially since they tend to want to rebel against things like uber-Christian religions that try and get the books burned for death and demons presented in them. That's at least my attempt at rationalizing it.

I think the popularity of the Raven Queen is probably based largely on this one key point:
Her name doesn't suck.

That's at least my attempt at rationalizing it. Heh. I have the opposite perspective; I'm a Christian and a lot of the gamers I know are too, so we like the RQ because we want to play a fantasy game. I mean, if you are committed to being "good" in real life, why the heck would you want to play a paladin of goodness? Much more fun to play against type.
I also tend to agree with the "name doesn't suck" thought. If you eliminate bland gods, gods who have strong racial leanings and evil gods, you're not left with much ...

So the Raven Queen's basically the only cool god in the bunch?

So the Raven Queen's basically the only cool god in the bunch? For myself her and Sehanine are my two favourite ones. Though, I generally don't like using gods at all, so too have two favourites is quite an exception. Three if you count Lady of Pain as a god too.
