So I suppose the question is, "How do I apply a coat of jade to him without him becoming a pessimist?"

Give people the benefit of the doubt, but don't give it to them more than once if they don't deserve it.

Uphold innocent until proven guilty.

Keep your weapon sheathed if you see no weapon in their hand, but don't take your armor off.

Basically: give people a chance, but don't leave yourself open to a dagger in the back. Have contingency plans in case things go badly, but don't necessarily expect them to.

You can trust people while still making sure they can't sneak attack you.

Instead of demanding they turn themselves in to the guards, hogtie them and make sure they're turned in to the guards?

Yep! But be fair in your recounting of events. If there are any extenuating circumstances make sure you tell them to the magistrate.

Remember: Good and fair, not stupid.

Okay, now I'm stuck. My character just watched a bunch of goblins murder a little girl in cold blood because the warforged fighter pulled a Leeroy Jenkins and charged in yelling, which alerted them to our presence. I don't know how I'm going to handle the aftermath of the fight.

He'll be furious with Mr Big, but he'll calm down. Suzu and him can conduct a burial.

Um.... honestly: with justified angst.

There's angst (like the kind Drizzt has) and then there's angst (I just saw a little girl murdered in cold blood because my party, and thus by implication and association myself, ****ed up royally).

This is (obviously) the latter kind.

But my biggest advice to you as a roleplayer: what would your character do. Don't ask "does it make sense for my character to do this?" Instead ask "I am I have just witnessed , now what?"

Going with the second my seem unnatural at first, but as you do it more and more you realize that the motivations you've already built into your character really do push it along.

The group I'm in right now does this. I have no problem knowing that "x" monster is immune to "y." My character doesn't know it if s/he fails the check. If it's an average character (8+ int) they might deduce it from obvious clues (hmmm, fire monster is on fire and lives in lava. Fire is probably less than effective). If really smart (14+ int) they'll deduce it from less obvious things (these monsters seem to operate in a hive-like metamind. They're probably resistant to things such as psychic attacks).

I thought roleplaying was like acting. I'm one of those guys who doesn't do improv acting well and needs a script.

roleplaying is acting.

but is also nothing like acting.

there is no script but what you make. there is no character except the one you create. you're not just there to give voice to the character, but to give life to the character in a way a normal actor never does.

do you have to be that immersive? no.
are you bad for not being that immersive? [s]yes no. just like you're not evil/good for not charoping the ever living **** out of your character.

But I personally think it's a lot of fun. I look at this forum as RPOping. :D

Which is what I'm trying to do. People keep telling me there's no right or wrong way to roleplay a character, but there is. A cleric of Pelor doesn't commit mass murder just for the hell of it anymore than a cleric of Asmodeus prances around a sunlit field picking daisies and hugging bunnies!

And I worry that if I roleplay my character wrong, I'll be called on it and won't know how to fix the problem.
