Hi, After playing the red box and eventually deciding to build our characters ourselves from the PHB, my group is a little unsure of the role of proficiency in rolls.. Currently I have been working out my attack rolls thus: 1d20 + STR mod + ½ level +weapon Proficiency + other bonuses So in my case it’s 5 + 1 + 3 (Dagger) +1 (from rogue scoundrel class feature) Hit rolls I am working out like: 1[W] + STR mod + other bonuses So in my case again its 1d4 + 5 Last night, one of the group suggested that the +3 (or whatever) from the proficiency of the weapon should also be factored into the Hit roll, so that’d be 1d4 + 5 + 3 in my case. Can anyone confirm whether this is the case or not? I had assumed not, as I couldn’t find it stated anywhere, but we’re finding the narrative nature of the PHB hard to quickly find specifics on rules on occasion Thanks!

Hi,

Uh, when you say "hit roll", you appear to mean "damage roll". Is that right? Proficiency does NOT add to damage. However, as a Rogue, it's very unlikely that you're adding Strength to your damage rolls as 99% of Rogue powers works off Dex, not Strength. So, assuming that 20 is in Dex, not Strength, your to-hit with most of your powers would be: 1d20 + Dex + Proficiency + Anything else = 1d20 + 5(stat) + 3 (dagger) + 1(class feature) = 1d20+9 Your damage roll for most powers would be 1W + Dex = 1W+5. Being a Rogue, you would also add 2d6 damage one per round if you were attacking with Combat Advantage. Individual powers will also add more damage or target different defenses or let you move before or after the attack. Also, your choice of Rogue type can affect things - a Brutal Scoundrel will add his Strength to every Sneak Attack, while a Artful Dodger will add his Charisma to his defenses against some attacks, etc.

Thanks for your reply. I was using STR as an example rather than DEX, as everyone else in my group uses that. Thanks for the confirmation that Proficiency does NOT add into damage rolls. I did indeed mean damage, I wasjust calling it Hit because it's listed as Hit on my cards. With regards to this bit: 1d20 + Dex + Proficiency + Anything else = 1d20 + 5(stat) + 3 (dagger) + 1(class feature) = 1d20+9
Are you assuming my DEX + 1/2 level = 5. In my case my DEX is 5 by itself, so I'd add another one to my to-hit rolls for my half level (being level 2) right? Making it 1d20 +10 (+12 if I have CA I think)
Cheers.

That's correct. Sorry, I missed that you were level 2.

Have the Underdark slave and Menzoberranzan Outcast themes been released? If so is there any way for me to find out what the details are on them without subscribing to D&DI?

Ask someone you know who has a DDI sub?
That's kinda the point of the DDI sub, for them to make money on Dragon/Dungeon content.

They were never released. They were slated to be in the Fringes of Drow Society article from #413, but were cut from the article prior to publication.
