Well, aside from looking through all the available inventory, my guys like to be creative. In our other game we play one of the guys has a sword with slots in it to put magic gems. Each gem carries a different ability, like levetation, animal control, etc. That's what he wanted, and we worked it into the game. Is something like that doable in 4e?? Not that exact item, but that idea of being creative with different things.

As with EVERY edition of D&D, you can houserule whatever you want.

I would say that, as long as an applicable magic item slot was "filled" by the gem, then there should be no problem. An item that grants animal control would be either a Head slot item or a Ring. After he slots the gem into his sword, find the appropriate Head slot item and equip it to the character and you should be good to go.

Descriptive text is just that, descriptive. As long as the mechanics are roughly the same, how you describe something really doesn't matter.

No such thing.

I've played Rapunzel. And Jiminy Cricket (with Pinocchio). In my arsenal of unplayed characters, I have a dog and also a crazy cat lady (the sort with many cats, not a cat-girl - I will probably never play this character because a single player with 6+ tokens on the board is unwieldy and the pet rules are a low-cohesion mess). There's another person here on the boards who tends to rip characters out of Gilbert and Sullivan musicals. We have mosquitos and crows as PCs. Plus a near-pacifist wizard.

Characters that nobody else would be likely to have just the right sort of insanity to think of, perhaps. But characters that nobody else could develop... nope.

By the way, all the above was done with standard by-the-rules builds and heavy refluffing. No custom items, no custom classes that took features or powers from multiple other classes. A standard build with heavy refluffing really is the way to go until you have quite a lot of experience... and the more experience you have, the less often you'll come up with something that you think a standard build with heavy refluffing can't do.

Yes; if a non-marked target atatcks you when you have both those feats and hit it with an arcane at-will last turn, you deal it autodamage equal to the original ability modifier, and then repeat the attack as a (IIRC) Immediate Reaction (I'm a little hazy on that last part, it might just be a free action).

So my D&D group is only made up of 3 guys, so I wanted to give each of them a familiar to help out. HOwever, 4e has nothing about familiars in the guides. I've heard the previous editions describes them, but not sure how well and what they are all about. Can someone give me an idea of where to find everything out about them??

Familiars are introduced in Arcane Power, are accessed with a Feat, and generally have small benefits. A familiar will confer a passive benefit while at rest, usually a +2 skill bonus and another minor benefit. While active, the familiar will have some sort of action it can take, such as delivering a message or manipulating objects.

The simplest solution to the three man party is to just reduce the encounter difficulty. Build the encounter as normal, then reduce the number of on-level monsters by one for a challenging encounter, or by two for an average difficulty encounter.
