Looks like my prediction came true. If that trend keeps up at least half my first round picks are going to suffer ignominious defeat. :P I have confudence in Rusty though, I guess that's something.

Is this for real? A rust monster vs a metal golem? Please tell you your kidding, because there is no way for the rust monster to lose. NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM Remember that this is a popularity contest, not an imaginary arena battle. We're voting for which MM2 monster should get future additional Dungeon or Dragon content.

I'm waaaaay more popular than some leaky old scrap heap. And cuter! I'll eat daggers right out of your hand! It's like a petting zoo, except I can cause extensive property damage.
EVERY DAY IS HORRIBLE POST DAY ON THE D&D FORUMS.
Everything makes me ANGRY (ESPECIALLY you, reader)

Ankheg all the way!
After years and years of imagining all the ways in which I would never use such a ridiculous creature, I have finally come to appreciate the inner ankheg in me.
For the release of 4e I bought not one, but two ankheg minis. And this was perhaps the greatest purchase I have ever made.
I look forward to my days of burrowing beneath the fields and snatching the farmers unaware.
But that second bout was a tough choice.
I went with the rust monster. Iron Golems will always have a place -- they're just too comfortable. Rusty's too iconic.
I can imagine Gygax, Arneson, and all the others, back in the 70s, trying to figure out how to counter the myrmidon's -7 AC.
Go ankheg, go!

Iron Golem beats Rust Monster... and this is why:
First, let's look back at 3.5 for a minute since it has stats we can compare. Rust monster is a low-level threat: 5HD and its attacks don't scare anyone but a pile of ore. Iron Golem is a high-level threat: 18HD, armor reduction, magic immunity. Granted the Rust monster's thing is to make stuff rust (*sarcastically* Great monster concept!) but the Iron Golem's got the poison before the Rust monster attacks and then could theoretically take out the poor creeper with one swing even at full health. I will grant the Rust monster fans the fact that the Iron Golem's fist and maybe more will be goners... but loose an arm and shoulder or be goo on the floor?
Second, let's apply some of the design philosophy of 4E: no save vs death. (Heck even Beholders don't petrify on sight.) So, what makes you think that the little Rust monster's "rusty attack" will work instantaneously... I argue that it's counter to the core of 4E. So we are left with a few turns for the adversaries to take whacks at each other. We saw where this left us in the 3.5 example - bug goo on the floor.
At best, I would grant the Rust monster a tie... with the Iron Golem becoming too incapacitated to fight after smearing the Rust monster on the floor (or succumbing to the rust damage after the beatdown).
As a personal side note - I envision the best version of the Rust monster to be a swarm of smaller critters that each nibble their own bits of metal and collectively wreck havoc, like in 'Hellboy 2' or the newest 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', rather than a bug with an extraordinary ability that makes PCs cry when they must erase their items.

I love the behir. It's one of my favorite monsters. But I'm not voting for it because they got Wayne England to do the 4e art for it, and I cannot stand his style. I don't know a single person who enjoys his art, have seen countless "no more Wayne England" threads on the forums, but they keep paying this guy!
Poor behir. At least I'll still love you when I look at my huge, blue mini.

Go Iron Golem, go, go! But seriously I can see WoTC expanding on it more then the Rust Monster. The Rust Monster is just a beast with a special trait, the Iron Golem can take on various sizes, shapes, types of toxins, etc. Also reasons for it to be created, perhaps a ritual for creating it, etc.

Rusty doesn't need reasons. Rusty just is, and he/she/it is awesome.
Gooooo Rust Monster!
