Well in the class creator we do only suggest Surges, because even in the PHB there was difference (compare Paladin to Fighter surges). We anticipated this move and I personally am rather happy with it!

As for your comments: Thanks a bunch, really. We are very happy we can bring this Toolkit to you, even though most of the work is still done by Eldritch_Lord

Cheers to you all! For what you give us, is one of the many reasons we created the Toolkit! Your joy is our payment! :D

Well, if and when I get around to getting the book with the Spellscarred in it (I'm a poor college student, so I'll only be getting new books Christmas and birthdays) I'll be able to add that. Until then, hold on.

Update! The Monster Creator is 90% done; the only thing I have left to do is the monster card maker, which should be simple now that regular printing is done. Hopefully, I should be able to put up version 1.2.0 sometime this weekend, assuming all homework gets finished.

Leichenreiter's in Germany, and his friend is hosting the site, but I'm in good ol' New York. If you're on the East Coast you shouldn't have a problem accessing it (I live in Virginia too when not at college, and I can get it fine there as well). Maybe it's your ISP?

Maybe we could/should try using one of the p2p networks for this, too? I mean, that was the basic thought of P2P

I thought you might like to know Minions don't calculate HP properly if you hit calculate. I've not yet checked Elite or solo. If you continue to click "calculate", for some reason the primary stat continues to increase by 3. Everything else looks good though.

Edit: HP Also doesn't seem to display right if you manually set it to one for minions.. it lists as 0 instead in the plaint text and monster card on my minions. Defenses seem to mess up on minions too, and display as 0 no matter the entered field.

The box to bring up the larger field for skills doesn't pop anything up.

If you save and load monsters, for some reason their abilities don't show until you add another to them.

And print monster card doesn't work yet(but I think that's expected, it's usually in a 1.x.1, right?).

Strange... I'll get right on it.

Fixed.

I think that's because it doesn't call the display method on load. Just hit the "Plain text" button and they'll show up.

EDIT: Now it works.

No, it works, or at least it does on mine, Leichenreiter's, and a friend of mine's here at college; what do you mean by 1x1?

EDIT: I figured out what you mean by 1.x.1 (I thought you meant a 1" x 1" box on the screen or something :doh and no, it should be working. Unfortunately, it seems that a change I made to the power card maker also screwed up the monster card maker, because I copy-pasted without changing variable names, just a few minutes before release, and forgot to test it. That will be fixed for next release. But you can at least see the pretty cards now!

Yeah, the variable issue was the root cause of all that. I can have the fixed version up fairly soon; I just wanted to give a few more days to see if any other bugs cropped up, so people didn't have to constantly download new versions. There's supposedly a way to do patches with the Excelsior packager, but I haven't had the time to sit down and figure it out yet, so for right now new versions are all I have to work with.

Not without rewriting the export code to use tables instead of plain text, I would imagine. I just copy and paste from the 'view' tab to the power templates I set up which duplicate the style exactly (I need to do this anyway because the program currently doesn't recognize anything but TrueType fonts, so I have to manually format it in MentorSans).

RyukaTana wrote:

At the moment, the whole point of the .doc writeup is to preserve the plain text formatting, as doing a copy-paste of that loses the formatting. Once all of the creators are done, I'll work on putting the power/monster/feat/etc. cards into the .doc file, formatting it in columns, setting the right fonts and backgrounds, etc.

Also the window is kinda small is there a way to increase the frame size so it isn't cut off? in the bottom right corner?

Finally, small nitpicks regarding grammar:

1. Class Creator: Build Options, there should be a space after the comma. Right now it prints "BuildOption1,BuildOption2"

When I wrote that part, HP was set by role, according to the PHB; now that the barbarian has broken that pattern, I'll change it to allow manual input.

Also the window is kinda small is there a way to increase the frame size so it isn't cut off? in the bottom right corner?

It's probably being cut off based on your resolution, since in the only baseline I have (my screen) it looks fine. The problem is that if you can resize the frame at-will, the buttons and fields don't want to line up (Curse you, Java!), but I'll see what I can do.

As for copying... why copy? Print it to file as Plain Text and you'll have a *.doc file including whatever your printed, be it a power, monster, PP or anything else you can do right now.

Directly copying from the Toolkit does not yet work, you instead need to print it and copy the text out of the doc file.

Hope it helped and I hope you have fun with the Toolkit!

Just wanted to give you guys an update on progress for the next release.

Finals are coming up, so for the past few weeks I've been insanely busy; I've coded thousands of lines of code, yet none of them have been related to the Toolkit. I haven't had a chance to update the website recently either, but rest assured I've taken any feedback and added it to my to-do list. (Seriously; it's 3 pages long in OpenOffice, and the font is tiny!)

On the other hand, in about 3 weeks I should be done with final projects and will have plenty of time as the Christmas break approaches; I'm planning a big overhaul that should include new Monster Creator features (including finally making the monster card maker work) plus a GUI redesign that should address quite a few comments about window sizing and other aspects not displaying correctly on their computers.

So hang in there; a new version is on the horizon.

feature requests:
- something like a Send-Bug feature, or a e-mail adress: if someone has an anoying problem ... this will report it
- oh, and an 'about' button/menu-item: I've got a DMs toolkit installed ... and now I don't know which version I got?

some bugs
- class creator/ powers tab / build name : this is wrong: there are 2 builds: tactical warlord and inspiring warlord ... but powers are not dependant on them, but on class features (tactical or inspiring presence)
- a 'do you want to save changes' pop-up is only needed if something changed ... otherwise not*
- the logo of the window is wrong: its the java logo ...
- is the readme.txt up to date? (not that anyone reads that ... but it seems a little outdated ... )
- (feature) buttons with an open window should not be disabled, but pressing the button should bring its window to the front (press power creator, press class creator ... press power creator again -> the power creator window should be up)
- (big feature) It always pains me to see non scaleble windows ... fixed size?
- I was very sad to see the effect when pressing the 'item/feat/ritual creator' button ... 'a has not yet been created window'?

(*: as developer: I'm guessing, since you use java, that the values are put in a class of some kind? simply creating a new class and comparing the windows class with the 'virgin' class can see if a popup if needed.
heck, you can do the same with files you open: keep a 'virgin' copy when opening and compair in the end)

edit: how about save as html (its an easy format that saves bold, ...)

Good idea. I don't know if Java can do that natively, but I'll see if I can fit in a workaround.

- oh, and an 'about' button/menu-item: I've got a DMs toolkit installed ... and now I don't know which version I got?

Hmm...I just double-checked and realized that, while it says the version in the menu bar...it's obscured by the minimize/fullscreen/close buttons. I'll be adding something to that effect, then.

- class creator/ powers tab / build name : this is wrong: there are 2 builds: tactical warlord and inspiring warlord ... but powers are not dependant on them, but on class features (tactical or inspiring presence)

Yeah, I put the "Build Name" in the powers because I figured that would be the most obvious link made (build choice->class feature that influences powers). Do you think "Class Feature" would be intuitive enough, or should I put something else?

- a 'do you want to save changes' pop-up is only needed if something changed ... otherwise not*

Yeah...people keep asking me to add that in, take it off, add it back, take it off again, etc....the majority of beta testers have wanted a prompt every time, and since I figured I'd just be taking it out again at some point, I didn't bother to check for changes.

I can probably do a check on whether changes have been made, since the save files are in a pseudo-XHTML format. Good idea.

- the logo of the window is wrong: its the java logo ...

It's not a bug, it's a feature! :D (When the DM Toolkit logo is shrunk to that size, it just looks like a blue-and-red blur.)

- is the readme.txt up to date? (not that anyone reads that ... but it seems a little outdated ... )

That's Leichenreiter's job; I'll go bug him about that....

- (feature) buttons with an open window should not be disabled, but pressing the button should bring its window to the front (press power creator, press class creator ... press power creator again -> the power creator window should be up)

Good idea. With the GUI changes I have planned, that shouldn't be necessary, but I'll keep that in mind.

- (big feature) It always pains me to see non scaleble windows ... fixed size?

Hey, blame Java, not me. The formatting doesn't want to work, so resizing windows means the text fields all move around, even thought I'm using BorderLayout and GridLayout to (theoretically) keep them in place.

- I was very sad to see the effect when pressing the 'item/feat/ritual creator' button ... 'a has not yet been created window'?

Hey, if you find a way to stop time so I can finish my final projects and the Toolkit, come talk to me.

edit: how about save as html (its an easy format that saves bold, ...)

That's basically what I'm doing with the output to .doc, so that shouldn't be hard. I'll see what I can do.

Basically, anything even close to window icon size is reduced to a blur of nothingness. I've talked to our resident graphics expert (i.e., Leichenreiter) several times, and he says there's nothing much he can do about it. An alternate logo might be possible, but I'd have to bring that up with him.

I tried that, but although the code is cleaner (much cleaner) it handles resizing slightly worse. That's why I'm using a combination of GridLayout and BorderLayout.

Other then that i have to say nice work, this is one of the best programs out there that i've seen do something like this. Seriously makes things a little smoother and not only that but it seems to allow you to break things down into a +1/-1 type situation for judging abilities and powers and stuff. Also can't beat the price of the program either.

Good news--those should coming in the next version; we've been planning to put those in after we do some more image work with the Toolkit. I think we mentioned this a few pages back...?

Bad news--the next version has been put on hold for a while until my workload lightens, so expect it around late December.

I think you mean Move as there is no Cascade option on the Windows taskbar icons, unless the program adds it in specifically.

Right-click on the taskbar itself, not one of the buttons... "Cascade Windows" should be there.

Don't worry, you're not necro-ing the thread, as it's meant to stay open for bug reporting and such until the final version rolls out (which could take a while ).

Regarding Toolkit placement...we seem to be having issues with screen placement and resizing with multiple people. I've gone through the Java API and JDK specifications; Java should be automatically resizing windows, and unless your screen resolution is less than 600 x 400 you should be seeing more than just the left half.

I'm beginning to think this is a bug in the executable creator; it works fine on my machine, as I've said, but that's when I'm running direct from source code, not from .jar or .exe; compressing the JDK into the .exe might be the source of the problem. If this persists, I might have to rethink my stance on distributing executables, but I'll continue to try to fix these bugs for the next version.

That particular error should only come up if there's an issue with saving a file with the same name--that is, there's a file called "sample.cls" somewhere and when you're trying to save "sample.cls" in the same or a different directory you get an error.

Try backing up any Toolkit save files you have, deleting the ones in that folder, saving that file, and putting everything back; everything should work after that. Someone emailed me with the same problem a little while ago and that worked. If that still doesn't work, I'll get some more information and see if I can do more to fix it.

Thanks for replying, but it still didn't work. I'm running Vista Home Premium and I haven't changed any of the settings on the toolkit.
Flag Undrhil December 18, 2008 10:49 PM PST
Try running the Toolkit as Administrator. It seems like the Toolkit gets locked out of it's default directory sometimes (C:\Program Files\Toolkit) and is unable to save since you aren't running as Administrator.

Try it and let us know.

Note: I don't work on the Toolkit, I just use it and love it and want to call it George but I am waiting on the next version for that...

Good Idea, Vista needs more kicks in the behind than any other system out there just to work properly. I've come so far as to run nearly every damn single program as Admin, simply because Vista does ***** a LOT less that way.

As others have mentioned, Vista and its permission system are most likely at fault if the backup-remove-recover trick didn't fix it. I'm dual-booting Vista Ultimate because it came with the laptop (though I only spend 30 minutes at a time on it to make the Windows Toolkit executables), so I should have known to put a disclaimer about Vista in there. *Makes a note to self: Warn people about Vista.*

To all DM's Toolkit users--

Well, everyone, it's been a while since you've heard from us regarding the Toolkit, and we have an announcement to make.

4e came out at kind of a bad time for Leichenreiter and myself, in terms of Toolkit timing; both of us have just entered college, and are taking mostly higher-level courses, so we're swamped with work and haven't spoken more than a few times since school began.  Since November-ish, the amount of progress I've made on coding new stuff couldn't be closer to “nothing” unless I actually deleted all of the code, and Leichenreiter hasn't touched the website in months.

So, at this point, you're probably saying “So what does this mean for us?”  The answer is: quite a bit, actually.  Effective immediately, we're going open-source with the Toolkit.  I was really hoping that he and I would be able to keep this closed-source until we had version of all the Creators up and running, and then release it for whatever tweaking people would want to do once we had something to be proud of, but unfortunately it looks like we're not going to be able to work on it for the foreseeable future, and we'd rather have someone out there besides us work on it than to have it languish entirely.

There are a few things that won't change—due to the agreement we have with Excelsior, if you want the Toolkit packed up in a fancy installer, you'll have to send it to us to distribute it.  Also, bug reports will still go to dm.toolkit@gmail.com, and we'll try to keep the website updated with bugs found. We will be hosting any versions for download that people are willing to send us; we'll take any tweaked versions and integrate them into a whole so any improvements made are shared among all Toolkit users; we have time for that much, at least, and we owe it to the community to do so.

What is changing?  First off, the Mac people should be happy; since we're releasing the source, I now have no problem with just putting up a .jar so Mac, Windows, and Linux users can use it equally.  The source code will be available for download on our site as soon as we can put it up (which may not be for a few days).  If you want assistance with deciphering the code—since it was in the middle of a re-coding when I had to stop work on it—you can PM or email us all you want and we'd be happy to help.  We're not abandoning the project by any means, just opening it up to other coders and artists so they can make progress where we cannot.

The code will be released under the GNU Public License, which means in a nutshell that (A) this is still the DM's Toolkit, so you can't change that or try to take credit for the whole thing; (B) you can't change the code a bit and charge for it, so this is going to remain free no matter what; and (C) you have to keep the license if you make any changes.

Thanks to everyone for all the support we've received since the very first suggestions of an idea were made three months before 4e went live.  Thanks to Scott Rouse, who got our project the green light when many other electronic projects stalled and died.  Thanks to everyone who hung on and cheered us on when we kept saying “We can't work on it.”

So break out your residuum, everybody; we're casting a raise dead on this project, and you're invited.

For information, I'd be willing to do some more of the basic art I did until now for others, who would expand upon our stuff. Just drop me a line and I'll try to do some stuff, most of the Toolkit art is not very time-intense, so it will be fine.

I really hope there are a few of you out there who can and will pick up on our work when we can no longer work on it ourselves for now.

I'm looking forward to what's coming!

What is the problem, exactly? It's simply a .jar file, so if you have the JDK or a JRE installed (which should be installed on a Mac by default) it should run without a hitch.

This means that the Java version the Toolkit compiled with is higher than the Java version on your computer. I'm fairly sure I was using Java 1.5, so if you can update Java to the newest version you should be able to make it work.

Flag Dwarven-Godfather February 12, 2009 9:47 PM PST
Thanks for helping me out with the problem, but found out that I was always have this problem until I upgrade to a newer Mac since Java 1.5 is not available for the older models. I guess I'm out of luck until someone comes by and looks into making an emulator that would make Java 1.5 think my Mac is a newer Mac. What I have found out is that Java 1.5 is only available for the OS 10.5 or better and there is NO plans to make it for the older OS systems.
