There is a limit to what you can do.
Yep, you can do absolutely anything you want so long as the mechanics stay the same.

Indeed. There was a reason I always subbed out my familiar for something else. 3E familiars sucked HARD.
Agreed!
In 3rd I had no choice but to get stuck with a class feature I never used unless the DM allowed me to sub it out. I would be more inclined to play a wizard and spend a feat to get a familar in 4th.

Well guess what??? There are DMs who want to play by the book because they don't want loads and loads of houserules to keep up with.
Which is the fault and shortcoming of the DM, not the text they are using.

You have to do the work first, and show you can do the work, before someone is going to pay you for it.
If you can't understand how someone yelling at another person would make them fight harder and longer, then you need to look at the forums a bit closer.

As others have pointed out, this is an ability placed in the hands of the player, and the rule is in the PHB.
The limits are
1) You can't change the mechanics
2) Your DM could always house rule PHB p. 55 away.
