Not that many here are promoting the idea, but evil is not killing babies, eating their brains and then running out into the street to lop off some heads. Thats psychotic.

I'd say it's also evil: psychotic evil, the new alignment for serial killers!

But point taken.

The ironic thing about Bane is that war for conquest is only 'evil' in modern terms, if you look back at people's attitudes during medieval times Bane would probably fit right in.

Just because a lot of people had no problems with waging war and conquering those around them at the drop of a hat, doesn't make unprovoked attacks upon another group of people with the express intent to subjugate those people to your will and take their stuff any less evil.

Conquest is evil, people in medieval times were ruled by fear and a disgustingly corrupt and tyrannical church, most of what went down in the middle ages could be quite easily classified as evil.

Conquest by its very nature is nothing but the rationalisation of "if it isn't me, its okay to kill it.". Which is the very definition of evil.

I think they goodied up what are *supposed* to be the good gods to remove the moral dissonance and also because I believe that at one point in development, they really were going to to the right thing and dump alignment and wanted to draw a line between the civilized (pretty) god and savage (ugly) gods.

Of course, then you've got Lloth, who in drow mode is smokin' hot and who controls an entire race of pretty bad guys, so yeah...

Yeah, but to be fair, most of the time they portray her she's in her spider form.

No, the ones that truly throw the system outta whack are succubi. How could someone so fine be so bad for your mortal soul?

Actually, I dare to suggest they are part and parcel to human nature, and there is nothing inherently wrong with wanting more material goods, or wanting to be famous... but to enact war for either purpose... neither are a good justification.

Greed, Envy, and Pride are all members of the Seven Deadly Sins.

However, simply being greedy, envious, or proud in and of themselves isn't what is referred to. Rather, it is their manifestations:

The Sin of Greed is in disloyalty, betrayal, or treason for personal gain. Hoarding, theft and robbery, violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority and so on, through Greed.

The Sin of Envy is described by Dante as "love of one's own good perverted to a desire to deprive other men of theirs." Thomas Aquinas described it as "sorrow for another's good".

The Sin of Pride is in Hubris, or as described by Dante as "love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbor."

Thus it is possible to desire to advance, without succumbing to greed or envy, and it is possible to have pride, without succumbing to the sin.

Jeez, this reminds me of my (Catholic) High School.

Bane is The Tyrant - isn't that sufficient to be "Evil"?

It's just like food. The more tasty something is, the more likely it's bad for you.

Now I understand that Bane is the god of war. That war is bad.

War is neither Good nor Evil.

Ahh, so THIS is where I can add a sig.

Remember: Killing an ancient God inside of a pyramid IS a Special Occasion, and thus, ladies should be dipping into their Special Occasions underwear drawer.

Punish insubordination and disorder. Again, not evil. That's being lawful. Most organization, from lowly business to the military, will punish this. There's no requirement to make the punishment humiliating or over the top either. Or are we to believe Drill Sergeants and anybody who ever fired someone for incompetence is evil?

Punish insurbordination and disorder? So if people aren't doing what you tell them to, beat and coerce them into doing so. Sounds pretty evil to me. I don't think your drill sergeant example is really what we're talking about here. Bane doesn't say "okay, you didn't voluntarily sign up and accept a salary in return for going through my training so I wont boss you about." Bane says "my army has conquered this town - anyone who disobeys my commanders or interferes with the order I impose, is going to regret it."

Bane = Lawful Evil all the way. Though I agree, that doesn't mean a soldier offering a sacrifice or prayer to him before battle is an evil individual themself.

Bane's evil because the ugly races like him and the ugly races are evil because we need flimsy justification to launch genocide campaigns against them.

I guess you and I had to agree on something some day. :D This is the way things work in D&D.

Ah but Lolth (and Succubus's) have a "true" form that reveals their evil nature. It's okay to be evil and beautiful if it's a mask. But for the people who are pretty and evil (usually female), well they're allowed from time to time. What you really don't see much of is Ugly an wrote:
