From what I am reading, the impression I get is that whatever caused this, happened today.

There seemed to be a delay between the sites removing access and removing them from the libraries. which would indicate that that they were only told today.

Now RPG now might have miss-interpreted the "instructions", or their intentions. as has been said they might have only been told to stop new sales. They might also have gone beyond the instructions to try and create a public outrage, considering how easily people shut down their rational minds to emotional causes/stimuli.

My best guesses are :
[LIST=1]
  • they were either (re)negotiating something, and the talks went south.
  • Wizards got wind of something through the site they did not like, and decided to stop the sales till it can be straightened out.

with each of these, I would not expect full word till things had gone through the lawyers, which means a delay until we hear the cause, and possibly weeks to months for any explanation.

There's a realistic chance of that being either a screwup on the part of Wizards, or a deliberate misinterpretation by RPGnow to create publicity. The intent could well have been to just forbid new sales.

Over on the Paizo boards they have posted that all previous purchases will have until the end of today to download their purchases at which time they will be taken off. Considering that multiple companies are doing the same thing (and wording it saying that they have been instructed to do it) I would bet that this is WotC doing it. While I understand their decision, they might've wanted to give a little more notice/announcement to people or respect other companies in the industry. While I understand business is business many companies are quite successful without screwing their competition, of which WotC has done on multiple occasions (At least with Paizo now). More reason now for me to buy less and less of their product. I was actually seriously considering buying PHBII to give 4e another try, but now... I'm not really sure I want to.

there was no such case before - where publisher suddenly drop their customers. Its a weird that without warning they take back from customers goods that they sell them. I bought all books in PDF and 4 cores as dead tree version. lbecause of the WOTC move legally i own now only paper books - welcome to the dark side of the piracy Maybe in the morning ill hear knocking into door and some guys in black glasses will come for hardcovers ?

Reportedly Paizo has just announced that people have until the end of the day to finish any WotC product purchases or downloads from their site.

I can't verify since their forums appear to have crashed shortly after I was told of this... so it could be rumor but somehow I doubt it.

Hey all. I wanted to step in and add shine a mote of light on the subject.

Unfortunately, due to recent findings of illegal copying and online distribution (piracy) of our products, Wizards of the Coast has decided to cease the sales of online PDFs. We are exploring other options for digitial distribution of our content and as soon as we have any more information I'll get it to you.

Read: I'm a horrible consumer who, instead of doing the reasonable thing and waiting for an explanation for the change in policy, jumps directly to the worst possible knee-jerk conclusion and decides to base future purchases off this conclusion.

You all should be ashamed of yourselves. This change happened all of three hours ago. You can maybe wait a couple of days for an explanation before your heads explode with contrived rage.

This would seem to indicate that everyone is being stupid, except Paizo. WotC for not having a release as to why things were shutting down, and the two sites for immediately cutting everything off, instead of giving their customers notice and time to act.

Edit: Yep. Stupidity on all fronts, except Paizo. Though the distributors should receive far more outrage then they're getting seeing that other companies have shown better ways of handling it were allowed.

Well...  At least we got custom avatars....

    Wow, really?!?

That was like the LEAST likely scenario I would have thought was the case.

Anyhow, thanks for shedding some light on it.

I Want my PDFs. When WoTC put out an errata. I just print a page with the changes.

Is there another site selling PDFs that WoTC are allowing?

Now that WoTC are no longer getting an income from the sales of PDFs what are they doing?

Did a Google search and see no annoincments.

Here is hoping the issue is resolved before the ARCANE book comes out and either RPGNOW or WoTC bring back the PDF's

Sorry for the rant but unless WoTC will replace my book with updated information for free with each Erratta. I want my PDF's back.

And to calm a few of you down, please see this press release, distributed a month ago.

According to the press release, online retailers will need to sign a dealer agreement in order to sell Wizards' products online.

Also: this press release, distributed today.
