Probably because their watermarks are easily removed.

What really bites about this is I just purchased PHBII from them a couple weeks ago. And I only downloaded it on my wife's machine thinking, Oh I can get it on my laptop before the next convention I go to.

I will not remove the water mark because circumventing DRM is illegal, but it really makes me want to remove it so I can transfer it to my laptop.

Guess I'll have to spend the money to print it, Ack !

Well, if they are planning on opening up their own PDF store then that's great! Then if not, I am really mad. I guess I was just naive and didn't think this would ever happen and that I would be able to get all my D&D needs through PDF form. I really don't want to start buying books.

Note that this isn't just on current 4E pdfs. I can't re-download any of my old purchased 1e/2e PDFs anymore either.

Evidently, WotC has put a stop to it.
Why?
I have no clue, but if I where to guess...

But really, I don't know...

What is your evidence in saying that sales are slumping? Really just sounds like a slam on WotC when you don't know what's going on. WotC has to ensure they protect the brand of D&D, and sometimes that makes them do things that seem odd...but we don't know the whole story and I'm sure there is a good reason. I'm sure someone from WotC will be along here before long to let us know the gist of what is going on and what the paths to resolution might be.

The unfortunate thing is for every person that pays for the service there are a bunch more that go and get it off the news groups. Which means some one that is paying for the book online is uploading to the news groups. I know that you can always just Scan a real book but from what I have heard in other forums this seem to be full chaptered and versed PDFs on the newsgroups.

More than likely until WotC figures a way to secure the PDF so that only Legitimate purchasers can use them them, you’re gonna see a lot more of this.

And the reason WotC would be so heavy handed is they are the BIGGEST target for this type of thing, but truth be told everyone gets hit by it.

If we have learned anything from the RIAA about copyright infringement we have learned that this could get real ugly real fast!

That's just my analysis

That might lend to the fact that they are changing something...possibly selling them themselves.

Paizo doesn't appear to have been shut down yet.

I don't understand, isn't watermarking just putting your name or some other Identification on the pdf? If so I think you can easily copy it to your other machine. The way I understood it, was that it was like buying a book, and they write your name on the book before you leave the store, you can put that book anywhere you want (your car , yours wives car , your friends house) but if you start copying the book and giving it away, they know who to send the cops after.

Hmmm - this is disconcerting. While I get most of stuff through Paizo.com I do have some TSR/WotC downloads through RPGNow/DriveThru (which are one in the same) and they are indeed unavailable.

Can't wait to see how this turns out.

That can't be the reason, they can't be that stupid. DRM is a pipe dream of the content industry. Every iteration of it is cracked immediately and the only people affected are the paying customers. I can't imagine Wotc plans to accomplish what the entire music, movie, and software industry has failed to.

If pirates can no longer get digital pdfs from rpg now, they'll get copies leaked from the printer or scan the books and ocr them.

All that said, its really really lame that this has occured without an announcement from Wizards... bad form.
