I just wanted to let you know that the beta test for the Character Builder demo is now open to everyone (yes this includes people who are not yet subscribing to D&Di). The beta is still for levels 1-3 but it has some new stuff added to it since the Closed Beta started for D&D Insider subscribers including new content from Martial Power, November Dragon, UI Updates, etc Check it out and let us know what you think. Here is the link where you can get to download the .exe file.

It's not installing correctly for some reason...

Yes, I installed it, but then it would not let me start it up. An error message would show. I uninstalled it and tried again, but now it keeps saying "an instance of this installation is already running". Little baffled here.

The most common error that has been found in the installation is problems with the download and installation of the .NET 3.5 SP1 framework. What people have found works is to completely uninstall any prior versions of .NET, and then install it from the MS website, and then install the Character Builder. When installing .NET, be warned that the last few % of the installation takes a lot longer than the first 95% or so does. Be patient, and allow the installation to finish. For more help, head over to the Character Builder Beta Technical Issues forum.

Yay! Now I can fiddle with it on my own PC, and don't have to use a subscriber's borrowed laptop!
The install went fine on my PC, but I had previously downloaded and installed the .Net prior to it.
One potential barrier to entry I saw: the link from the Character Builder page doesn't link directly to the Character Builder, but instead to a downloader program. I have a friend without a home internet connection, who uses library computers to access the web and download things. In such a situation he wouldn't be able to use this, as the library computers won't run downloaded programs.
But on the other hand, people who do not have an internet connection are probably not the target audience for D&DI.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU WOTC!!!
I absolutely LOVE the character builder. I have never had an easier and more enjoyable time making a character. The features are awesome and this has definitely inspired me to subscribe to DDi as soon as I can (holiday season is sapping my funds lol).
Honestly, its everything and more that I hoped for and my only regret is that DnD didn't have this awesome tool for 3.0/3.5. That would have saved me WEEKS of preparation.
Either way I love it and my hats off to WoTC and all its staff.
Thank you very much!

Very nice. Very, very nice. It took some effort to download, but I like very much. The only problem I have with it is the Ability Scores page. It won't accept the scores of my character, because I rolled so high. My Dragonborn Fighter had (at level 1) a 20/17/16/15/16/16 after racial mods. I realize this is VERY high rolls, but my DM didn't care, and neither do I. I don't plan on taking advantage of it really, and it lets me have a nice buffer for messing around a bit. Also, I'm playing a 2-player campaign right now, so the extra points help me stay alive for now. Technically, I could keep auto-rolling until I match my character's rolls, but that's dumb. Just let me enter the values I want, give me an "oh noes, you are breaking rules" warning, and be done with it. With that one caveat, I LOVE it. As a new player, the layering of powers and things get somewhat confusing. I love how clicking on a power tells you EXACTLY what that power does, counting bonuses and such. I love how it tells me what level I took that power at. My only other suggestions would be to allow multiple characters to be displayed at once (especially that little demo box to the left!) and to allow players to record HP and other things. Auto-updating my to-hit total from being Bloodied would be nifty. It's a minor thing (and probably takes hours to code, trust me I know! See my sig!) but it's minor things like that that make the biggest difference. To be completely honest, this program may be worth paying the monthly fee for by itself, and I loathe monthly fees! I will probably hold off becoming a full member until the public release is out, and things are finalized a bit more, but kudos to the IT department!

Make level up it's own tab. Show an index or something about what level grants you, so we can plan ahead a bit.

The builder is a great piece of kit. Thanks WotC.
Lots of things I never knew about; like character backgrounds and new feats. It has also shown me some places where I was going wrong, I never realised that my wizard should have had the pick of two utilities at 2nd level. Oops!
I just hope that my PCs don't turn 4th level too soon though...

I like that.
My suggestion I take it we are going to be allowed to use any image eventually as a character image? (one that's not wotc supplied in other words)
Next suggestion. Ditch the Rolling method entirely or at least make some kind of immutable tracker that tells how many times that "roll dice" was selected.
Prefer the former option though.

My suggestion I take it we are going to be allowed to use any image eventually as a character image? (one that's not wotc supplied in other words) You can, it's in the last tab, under "portrait."
You may want to pre-render the image to the right size (100x100 px or so?) because that feature has literally no frills. It simply shows the image, stretched to fit the square offered.

Is there going to be an option to use it online without installing program? Why would you want such a thing? Sure, it takes a while to download at first, but the convenience from there is amazing. You don't need to be online to use it, first of all, and you can load it on a portable device (laptop, or even a phone nowdays.. :eek
If it's difficult to download, I feel your pain (I have dialup), but requiring a live connection would be more irritating in the long run.
Imagine having to load ALL of those images LIVE through dialup.

Yeah, it's much better now. Initial pain for none later. always better.
By the way the character portraits work great. I've not noticed any distortions with custom images.
Ya'll forgot the Ranger, Warlock and Paladin multi class feats. At least when I'm trying to be a Genasi Swordmage.

Anyway, I hadn't considered that angle, but laptops are getting cheap now. I think $350 - 400 can get a nice, minimalist PC with XP and 2 GB of ram.
That may be quite a bit of money for many people (especially other countries, I hear international shipping charges are a beast), but if you just save $10 each week for half a year or so it's quite possible. :/

Get a nice, largish flash drive (8 GB?) and run it from there. I think that will work... The program itself is actually quite small, taking up about 22mb or so. The problem is the .NET installation requirement. Not many computers have it installed already. And it's a fairly hefty install too, and you might not be able to install it without admin privileges. And most public computers won't let you run your own programs at all, let alone install anything (and any that do are ripe for keylogger abuse).

The bug report link doesn't take you to a place where you can report the bug. I hope this is the right spot. The initial problem with downloading seems to have been fixed. Thank you very much. Not all of the items' bonuses are being applied to the stats boxs. The most notable being Magic Armor in the AC class. Also some of the wonderous item bonuses are not being applied ie. Iron Bands of power in the damage column.
So far the character builder looks great! When do you think it will go live? I could really use it for our campaign. We're on the Troll Haunt campaign now so our characters are 13th level. Would love to print a sheet off that has everything, especially the powers my character has.

The only problem I have with it is the Ability Scores page. It won't accept the scores of my character, because I rolled so high. First off, I'm really digging the character builder. It kicks ass.
And to address the quoted message, I think what will fix that is instead of using the +/- buttons to increase the score, highlight the numbers on the RIGHT (the section that looks like part of the character sheet, not the the blue circles) and punch them in there. Hope that helps.

I think you are right. It's stopped pestering me when I click "next." I never would have tried entering numbers manually.
Apparently this feature/property needs tweaked a bit more. Either a comment should be added to that page to explain how it works, or something.

I personally use Linux (Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex) and the .net requirements mean that I can't use the program, even with Wine. I will be using Linux as soon as I find a distro that likes my laptop's wireless and sound cards. Fortunately, I'm not worried about .NET since I have SKi's CharGen which works just as well in OpenOffice as, I presume, it does in Excel. ------------------------------------------- But for now: I do have windows (2kSP4) and .NET (the absolute newest as of about two months ago; I'm hesitant to screw with it since it works for everything else that needs it) but when I try to run the character creator it crashes with this incredibly useful error message:
"Character Builder has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Gee. That's helpful. /snark

Heya people,
For most of you with .net problems, download the full version instead of the web installer.
Here's my question. No matter what race you pick, it starts with STR 8? Is this right? I thought that there were no more negatives to starting characters when all other stats start at 10. Any thoughts?
Next is that I created a minotaur Barbarian. On the alignment side I can choose Lawful Good, which is wrong, and I can't choose CG, or CN .. so I chose unaligned so it would confirm to rules.

Heya people,
After reading through the Player Guide I understand that everyone starts with STR 8. I believe my minotaur can choose good to bypass the lawful part. Now after making a rogue I find out there is no weapon finesse feat to choose. Are heroic feats only available at lvl 1 and heroic tiers 2 and 3? Or whenever there is a feat choice?

Hi, Noticed one problem with the character builder: A friend wanted to create a spell-scarred character and because that feat wasn't available left it blank. The char builder then assigned a feat to that slot itself - one recommened by his class/race. This I think is a case of the char builder being too helpful as the new feat changed lots of stats on his sheet. Not sure that kind of parenting is required But in general LOVING it! Hope the proper one comes out before we hit 4th level.

I think my biggest issue so far has been in the equipment search function and the default layout of the character sheet. Character sheet first - The skills panel, it its default position, cuts off several skills (most notably stealth), and could be in a better position as default. I realize you can move things around, but it took me fiddling with it to make it happen, and for something as intrinsic as skills that shouldn't be something the user has to do. Search function - I want to find a brutal weapon. Can't search for weapons with the brutal keyword. I can search for weapons by name (battle hammer, for example) but not for a weapon that's versatile, or high crit. This would be very helpful.

Orcsbane It's a known problem. If you go down to the boards for it, there are some work-arounds for it. Long story short, you have make your own custom arangement of the sheet.

Is there anyway to take away all the optional crap from the online mags? Not in the beta version, but the functionality exists. If you go to the "Finish" tab and click the "Restrictions" button you can see the page where you can remove rules and import houserules. And theses rules sets can be saved and loaded later. We'll see how well this works in the full version.

Well, I did have a heck of a time getting it to work, but once I did... Wow! Love the flexability. I made a character, and even inserted original artwork for my character portrait!
Way cool.
I am now looking forward to more, including the tabletop.
Keep up the good work WOTC.

I love the Character builder, HOWEVER, there is a need that I'd like to be able to do:
- Is it possible to change the character sheet in the full version? Could we build our own sheet layout and print it? - Will it be possible to enter our own custom powers in the system? - Will it be possible to modify the existing ones (let's say to translate the power in French?) - Or at least, will the publishers of the other languages edition be able to provide the translated software/translation kit?

When the forums were first changed (not upgraded) I started compiling a list of legitimate complaints. Some of these problems have been addressed, but if you have anything to contribute, please see this thread: LINKWant a free, graphic-based, customizable collection database to inventory your cards? I made one. Feedback welcome. Beta 4.3 (including Worldwake) is now available! Program runs offline from any directory/hard drive, includes art, data import/export options, complete Oracle text, and a complete list of every printing of every card.

Thanks for the first link, it was really helpful! However, for point 2 and 3, maybe I'm not understanding correctly, but is it only a link to the Character Builder forum? Not a direct answer to my questions, isn't it? I'm trying to look through the forum, but haven't found the answer yet (if it even exists...)

Don't know about 2&3 for sure, but that would be the place to check/ask.

It's a property of weapons with the versatile keyword. Look in the equipment chapter on weapons.

Just used it for the first time. Other than the issues already pointed out, seemed fine to me.
Anyone know when it will be able to do higher levels? I'll subscribe when that one becomes available.

I just wanted to let you know that the beta test for the Character Builder demo is now open to everyone (yes this includes people who are not yet subscribing to D&Di). The beta is still for levels 1-3 but it has some new stuff added to it since the Closed Beta started for D&D Insider subscribers including new content from Martial Power, November Dragon, UI Updates, etc
Check it out and let us know what you think. Here is the link where you can get to download the .exe file. Hey, Scott, it works great for me, except for the 3rd-level limit (any idea of when the full version is going to be available? EDIT: Never mind, Mudbunny just answered that.), and the lack of multiclassing feats for the newer classes. Some friends are having problems getting it to install properly, but I've e-mailed them Mudbunny's advice on that, and after we see if that helps, I'll post back.

If you head down to the DDI forums, there are a couple dedicated to the character builder, including one that is all about technical problems.

Some quick advice that seems to solve a lot of problems: Restart your computer a couple of times. (This is to clear up any hanging installations). Install .net 3.5 v SP1 (go to http://www.hanselman.com/smallestdotnet/ to find the smallest package for your system). Be patient, the first 99% goes quick, the last 1% may take a loooooong time. Restart your computer a couple of times to make sure that the .net installation is complete. Download and install.

but this bonus shoundn't work with two weapon fighting. You said you were using it two-handed. The property is active if the weapon is used with both hands.

It's another little bug with the character builder. When you hold a versatile weapon and select to use the same versatile weapon in your other hand, it assumes you are using the one weapon two handed. This will probably be fixed in the full version. If not just work around it, it's still awesome.

As a 28 year veteran of D&D I've been around long enough to experience just about every piece of software TSR and WotC have backed. Specifically, I own the more prominent AD&D Core Rules and its expansion + E-Tools and all the expansions that Code Monkey Publishing managed. While both had some nice little shiny bits, overall they fell short of even modest expectations.
On the other hand, the Character Builder rocks! My God men, thank you for finally delivering a piece of SW that really works. If time is what you need to make sure the tabletop is as much a success in Beta then by all means take the time you need - it will be worth the wait.
Now, I have a question about future update material releases. The Character Builder is expected to go to full release around the end of this month. The PHB2 will be released in March. Will the new material found in the PHB2 be released before, after or coinside with the PHB2 release? I anticipate being relieved of my DM duties around the time of the PHB2 release and would like to build a Warden as my first character using the Character Builder.

According to Digital Insider #9, the compendium is to be updated the 4th tuesday of the month, and include the products that went on sale that month. I believe that the goal is to have the Character Builder be updated the same way, but I don't recall any definitive statement on that.
I do know that they are planning on having monthly updates to the Character Builder, I just don't know what the lag time between books being released and data added to CB will be.

I wanted to go on record as stating that I like the Character Builder. I am not a fan of DDI at all, but this is certainly a notable exception, IMO. However, I did want to point out something:
- I'd certainly like to know of possible tools or mods for allowing homebrew races to be used. For example, I can't include the racial mods or traits for any of my homebrew races, which means their character sheets and ability scores are wrong, and thus the rest of the sheet is wrong. I thought it would be really neat if stuff like that could be integrated when Character Builder is 100% go, so I guess it's something to think about, especially considering I'd love to incorporate that aspect, if not for me, then for other gamers.

House Rules were always gonna be a difficult to implement in this particular subscription model. Hopefully, when the "check box" for the allowance is accidentally check back off, the changes are saved somewhere, but I don't see Wizards looking that far ahead.

Maybe as a future option they will give some API or XML format or something that we can add houserules with (XML would probably be best; an API would be overkill and not usable by 98% of D&D players).
Perhaps that's what the URL entry is for? CB rules for the houserule?
Please?
