Q: PHB1 p295 states that when dropping a creature to 0 hp or below you have the option to choose to kill the creature or knock it unconscious.

Does this also apply for wizard damaging spells (in this case Cloud of Daggers) ? (I come from a 3.5 background where there was lethal & non lethal damage and spelldamage was always lethal)

When any character drops a monster to 0 HP, by any means, they can choose to kill it or not kill it.

There's no "lethal damage" versus "nonlethal damage" rules.  There's just damage, and a general rule that says you can kill someone or not, your choice.

(In general, it's best to not assume that anything works the way it did in D20.  There are many things with similar concepts and similar names, where the details are different and the differences are pretty major.  For example, standing up from prone provoked an Attack Of Opportunity in D20, but does not provoke an Opportunity Attack in D&D.  Some people assume it should, and get confused because there's no rule that says it doesn't in D&D - there doesn't need to be a rule that says it doesn't provoke.  There's a rule saying what circumstances DO provoke, and "stand up" isn't one of them.)

Confused about Stealth?  Think "invisibility" means "take the mini off the board to make people guess?"  You need to check out The Rules Of Hidden Club.

Yes, it does.  You ALWAYS get to choose.

Forget everything about 3.5; this is a different game.

Is there a FAQ about summons anywhere? Couldn't find any...

I've been reading about summons today and I got quite a few doubts that I couldn't find a clear answer anywhere... (there are some threads on the forum about it but often with contraditory answers)

I'll be using Wizard's Summon Succubus as reference here.

1. summons don't act by themselves, so I'm assuming no opportunity actions for them.

2. if only a move action is commanded to the summon is that enough to prevent intrinsic nature from triggering? if this is the case, does the summon then just move and stay idle for the rest of this turn? 

3. it seems there's a small gap on general rules about move actions... it says the summoner can command the summon to "crawl, escape, run, stand up, shift, squeeze, or walk", what if the summon has fly/climb/swim/etc speed in its stats (but not a move command)? can't the summoner command it to fly, climb or swim (regarding it doesn't need a skill check to do that)?

4. the summoner takes his standard and move actions on his turn, then he uses his minor to summon a creature... his turn ends and no command was given to the summon, so the intrinsic nature triggers and it doesn't matter if this was the turn in which it was summoned, right?


Sorry for so many questions, I really think there should be a FAQ on summons

1. Yes, no Opportunity Attack unless it specifically has the command, such as the Obedient Servant.

2. Yes since you will have given your Summon a command by the end of your turn.

3. Yes it can be commanded to Walk or Run with such Special Movement Mode. 

4. Yes since you won't have given your Summon a command by the end of your turn.

I'm playing a pixie, and have the feat that gets you cover if you share a square with an ally.

Now that ally sometimes moves, and i'd like to know if he could simply drag me with him. I couldn't find anything that would prevent it, i'm not even heavy enough to warrant a reduction in speed.

Still i somewhat have the feeling that there should be some downside to dragging the pixie around. Is there really none?

You need to have a creature grabbed before you can pull it using the Moving a Grabbed Target action. (RC 244)

Simply sharing spaces does not move creatures along, unless noted otherwise (ex. Gelatinous Cube)

Then i guess we played dragging your unconcious allies around wrong all this time (we never grabbed them beforehand)
