[FONT="Arial Black"]Dungeon Master Screen Errata Thread[/FONT]

I recently received the new 4th edition Dungeon Master's Screen in the mail. I am generally pleased by its construction and appearance, but being the guy I am (and past experiences) I went through it for errors.

I'll share what I found here in a similar format to the official updates. Keep in mind that Wizards has officially updated the Skill Check Target DC table, and you can download a printable version that should fit over the same size here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/updates

Panel 1
Table: Light Sources
[Note] The table quoted appears on page 67 of the DMG, not page 66.

Panel 2
Table: Actions in Combat
Standard Actions:
[Addition] Add "Ready or stow a shield" to the table of Standard Actions.

Minor Actions:
[Addition] Pick up an Item: Add “within reach” to the end of the entry.
[Deletion] Remove "Ready or stow a shield" from the list of Minor actions. It is a Standard action.

Panel 3
Table: DCs for Commonly Used Skills
Climb:
[Substitution] Climbing a ladder: Should be an Athletics check of DC 0
[Note] Accelerated Climb: There is no reference in the PHB about ‘Accelerated Climbing’ whatsoever. As such, this is a supplemental rule, or erroneous information.

[Revision] Escape from Restraints: The DC of 20 is the base to escape, the DM may increase the DC based on type and quality (PH 181).

Find Tracks:
[Note] Huge or larger creature’s tracks reduce the DC to find them by 5. It may be confusing the way it is worded on the screen as “+5 to check” being presumably a bonus to the Perception check result.

[Revision] Find Tracks: “of” should read “or”

Detect Magic:
[Substitution] Replace “Identify a conjuration or summoning effect” with “Identify a conjuration or zone”

[Substitution] Replace all instances of “ + spell level” with “ + ½ the level of the power or effect”

Heal:
[Substitution] Replace “Let a character use a healing surge” with “Let a character use second wind, but without gaining defense bonuses”

[Substitution] Replace “Help a dying character recover” with “Help a character recover from a disease. Heal DC: Variable”

Listen:
[Substitution] The DC for “Normal Conversation” should be Perception DC 10, not 5.

[Substitution] The DC for “Whispers” should be Perception DC 20, not 15.

[Substitution] Replace “Far away – Perception DC +1 per 2 squares” with “More than 10 squares away – Perception DC +2”

Panel 4
Table: DCs to Break or Burst Common Items
[Note] Break through force portal: The table cites ‘Break through force portal’ as being from PH 262, but it actually appears on DMG 64 on the table DCs to Break Down Doors.

[Deletion] Surprised: remove “(you can also take free actions)” – that clause was removed from the PHB in official Updates.

Table: Conditions
Prone:
[Addition] The table does not list that you can drop prone as a Minor Action. It also does not list the “You can’t move from your space, although you can teleport, crawl, or be forced to move by a pull, a push, or a slide.” From the most recent Update.

Table: Healing a Dying Character
[Substitution] Regain Hit Points: Replace “If a healing effect requires you to spend a healing surge but you have none left, your condition doesn’t change, but you regain hit points after an extended rest if someone has stabilized you using the Heal skill”

with “If the healing effect requires you to spend a healing surge but you have none left, you are restored to 1 hit point.” See PHB 295.

Simple solution...

Refund everyone who bought the screen. Its trash.

Or, at the very least, fix it and offer a mail in replacement program. This item simply has too many errors to be a 'quality' product.

I actually find it very useful. The errors are minor and reasonably easily corrected, it's of high production values, and there's a lot of very valuable information in it. YMMV, but the errors listed here are certainly by no means sufficient to make it "trash", at least for my use.

Bump, people should know about this.

Some of it though, like page source for light sources is correct if you want to READ how light works rather than the page the light source table is on. But yeah, climbing a ladder check of 5? The pick up item without "within reach" pretty bad.

I do like the DM screen and I use it every game, I do wish it was correct and perhaps...didn't have certain things so as to make room for others (Do I need to have the monster XP rewards? isn't that on the monster manual which I'm looking at to see what the monster does? Did we need Character Advancement there? Is that something that comes up so often as to put it there?

EDIT:
The tracks, I think it is "or" and not "of".
I think it means "if there are huge creatures, it's easier to spot the tracks. AND if there's 10 creatures (of any size) it's easier. I bet 10+ huge creatures would be super easy to see.

I did say "or" is probably the correct word.

Some of the things I noted are extremely minor, just thought I would mention them.

I admit I came off harsh, I must have been upset when I posted. It is useful, but a little quality control can go a long way.

Its such a simple aid, just a collection of reprinted rules in one convenient location, it really shouldnt have shipped with so many errors was all I was trying to say.

Has there been a revised screen yet?

Personally, as a DM, I don't generally find the errata all that useful. I only ever seek it if I feel something is broken in my game, or if a player is trying to rules-lawyer me.

In both cases, it's easier for me to just houserule a solution than it is to go looking up the errata.

Sorry, I have yet to actually hold the new DM screen in my hand. Outside of the above-mentioned errors, is the screen made of high-quality material? Does it have sufficient heft to keep it standing in place during the game?

There have been some horrid, flimsy, warpy, loud-fart-blows-it-over screens issued in the past. If this is another of those, I won't bother tracking it down and will just keep using my stained and battle-scarred 1e screen.

The screen is incredibly sturdy IMO. The material used is similar to that of hardbound book covers.
