Gentlemen,
This weekend, I'd like to discuss with you the optimization of the obvious: builds that have good synergy, are forgiving of beginner mistakes, and have options which are easy to use.
Good Example: Dragonborn Cleric, all Strength, little Wisdom, no lasers. It's not something a beginner might think of, because Clerics are "supposed to be" high in Wisdom, but it's easy to use and it's plenty effective in combat.
Bad Example: Warlord with Power Attack.
The basic idea is to come up with a stable of iconic good builds that can serve as a baseline for playtesting and as pre-gen characters for modules, etc.
I'll start in my next post.
Thanks, -- N

Halfling Rogue comes right to mind, especially if you do the CHA rogue vs the STR rogue, and skill bonuses on some skills that matter.

Just taking a quick glance you'd have Dragonborn Cleric, Paladin, Rogue & warlord. Elf Fighter, Ranger & Wizard. Eladrin Wizard. Halfling rogue, Teilfling Warlock or Warlord. Dwarven Fighter. At least as far as attribute bonuses go.

Don't know if this counts, but Gnome Warlock with training in Stealth (can be gained by multiclassing with Ranger). Shadow Walk grants concealment, which sets the gnome up for starting every combat encounter (as long as you can justify having moved just prior to rolling initiative) in stealth mode thanks to reactive concealment. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Hunter's Quarry should also stack with Warlock's Curse, making things really nasty for one enemy.
Not to mention attribute bonuses to two of the class's three favorite stats.

Half-Elf Paladin, get hellish rebuke, mark with divine challenge. The marked target can not attack you and take damage and a -2 penalty or can attack you and takes damage if it hurts you.

Cheers, -- N Well, my buddy who's only made two characters before in his life picked it out within 15 minutes of starting the character creation process. :P
