According to the consensus, use a slash (/) to separate the data in each tier: Heroic class data, Paragon path data, and Epic destiny data. In that order: class/path/destiny. For example: Fighter/Pit Fighter/Demigod (Ftr/Pit/Dem).

Write out the first three letters of a name, but ignore vowels unless its the first letter: Strength (Str), Intelligence (Int), Cleric (Clr), Druid (Drd), Eladrin (Eld).
Ignore silent letters, unless its the first letter: Fighter (Ftr), Trickster (Trk), Halfling (Hfl), Gnoll (Gnl).
"Liquid" consonants (n,r,l) before another consonant may optionally be ignored: Ranger (Rgr), Dwarf (Dwf), Kobold (Kbd).
If the name is a compound, replace the last letter of the abbreviation with the first letter of the second part: Psychic Warrior (PsW), Swordmage (Swm), Dragonborn (Drb), Shadar-Kai (ShK), Warforged (Wrf), Githyanki (Gty), Githzerai (Gtz).
Optionally ignore particles (the,a,of): Champion of Order (ChO), Wizard of the Spiral Tower (WST).
To distinguish similar abbreviations, replace the middle or last letter of the abbreviation with any salient consonant: Warlord (Wrd) vs. Warlock (Wrk), Swordmage (Swm) vs. Swordmaster (Smr) vs. Sword Marshal (SMl).
Exceptions to the above rules use a noninitial vowel: Dexterity (Dex), Charisma (Cha), Paladin (Pal), Rogue (Rog), Wizard (Wiz), Pit Fighter (Pit), Demigod (Dem), Human (Hum), Gnome (Gno), Divine (Div), Primal (Pri), etc. Such vowels are generally for common terms.
Generally, Im satisfied with the abbreviations for Races, Classes, Class Variants, and Epic Destinies.
However, Im not thrilled with current abbreviations for Paragon Paths. Ideally, I would want each Path abbreviation to be two letters, but similar sounding names make this format problematic: Pit Fighter vs Path Fighter, Sword Master vs. Sword Marshal, Battle Mage vs. Blood Mage, etc.
I revamped the abbreviations. Now they all use the same rules consistently. Im pretty happy with them.
Besides a few well known exceptions, its easy to know intuitively what the abbreviation for any character-building name should be.
:whatsthis I added a dictionary of D&D 4e abbreviations. So if you come across some mysterious abbreviation, theres a good chance youl find what it means here.
If you dont find the abbreviation, you can post it here and see if someone else knows it.
As an aside, I seriously hope most of these dont wind up in general use. I mean, if you are abbreviating stuff like drow, elan, human, bard, etc, then your post deserves to be ignored.
Also, it seems like all the abbreviations are 3 letters... any reason for this?
Pally is a well known and easy to understand abbreviation, as is Sorc. Im not convinced they need more shortening.
