Question: Do We Really NEED More Races?

Honestly, what's the point in forcing the issue of new PC races in Player's Handbooks? There are currently 22 races available to players, and we seem to be getting more all the time.
What's wrong with what we already have? I guess my frustration comes from the fact that, in most campaigns I've played since 3.0, I have been inparties where there's no humans at all. However, most fantasy fiction I've read focuses on or heavily features humans. In my current campaign, I had to just about force a guy to play a human. He was new to the game, and he wanted to play human, so it worked out.

I guess my point is that there are plenty of fantasy races already, and, if we decide we need more, WOTC could easily produce variants of the races we currently have.

I wouldn't be against Wood Elves, or Half-Giants as a Goliath variant, or other types of Shifter, but what I don't want to see is WOTC desparately trying to make things up just to fill out PHBs.

we dont, but more races = more options. As a dm it might not be so good,if youre shy to limit players to races you see appropriate to your campaigns. Personally for me as a DM more material in any form just a bit of extra work on screening appropriate material ( though its been mainly material from dragon mag aka playtest mag). As a player i welcome more options to dabble with.
Currents problems with the boards(last time i checked):
- people with agonizingly long signatures

Do we really NEED anything other than the barest essentials to survive and prosper? What does it matter to you if WotC provides others with material they're likely to use? Are you honestly saying that you'd deprive others of new material because you deem they don't need it?

I would say hell yeah, fantasy is a very wide-ranging genre and as such many different types of races exist within it. Having D&D emulate some of those would be a great thing. To just go over what we already have would just make it bland, and cut down on the amount of worlds, stories and ideas that can be done. For example, the Bas-Lag books by China Mieville wouldn't be half as awesome if all the bizarre races were cut out.

Most of us start with the basic races but after a while we might want some variety for a new challenge to keep it fresh. Nothing wrong with that. It's not like anyone has to play something unusual if they don't want to so the option is nice to have.

Yes, we need more races.

And by 'we', I mean 'I'. And by 'need' I mean 'want'. And by 'more races', I actually just mean 'shadar-kai'...

Need, no.
Want? Yes.

I fail to see where there's a problem if nobody wants to play a human.
Another day, another three or four entries to my Ignore List.

I guess my objection has to do with the fact that the race that is supposed to be the most plentiful in the world sees almost the smallest percentage of adventurers. That fact that someone may consider playing a Bullywug before a human is pretty ridiculous.

And, from a mechanical perspective, it won't be long before we hit the limit of stat bonus combos. It's ok that we have more than a couple of races available, but I'm starting to feel as though the flavor of some of these races is becoming as bland as if they were all human subraces.

Like I say, there are probably a lot of opportunities to make interesting options for races we already have, and, once in a great while, throw out a writeup for a new race that would work. Is that too much to ask for?

I second this. There are still races I'd like to see some day. There is still plenty of material left for wotc to publish for 4e. Lots of races and classes to be used up.

I'm not to keen on the idea of subraces. I don't want 3-6 versions of the same race unless they are very different.

Also, 22 races available right now as player character races?

phb1
1.Dragonborn
2.Dwarf
3.Eladrin
4.Elf
5.Half-Elf
6.Halfling
7.Human
8.Tiefling

phb2
9.Deva
10.Gnome
11.Goliath
12.Half-Orc
13.Shifter

ecg
14. changeling
15. kalashtar
16. warforged

frcg
17. drow
18. Genasi

Dragon 376
19. Revenant

Dragon 372
20. Shadar-Kai

Dragon 371
21. Dhampyr (which isn't really a race)

Dragon 369
22. Minotaur

Dragon 367
23. Gnoll

lol, Guess you were right after all! But still, the races listed in dragon don't count because plenty of people don't subscribe so they don't have access to that info. We need lots and lots of options from the core sources. Also, phbs without races are not worth buying. Soon it will be "we have too many classes" then "we have too many magic items" and so on until there is no point in wotc releasing anything else. Then before you know it, BAM, 5e.

If you don't like something, don't use it. If you want to use something, houserule it until wotc add it in. But we do want more options.

PS: If I missed any races, let me know and where they can be located. Thanks!

[edit] added gnolls to the list.

Long Live Dragonlance and the Nexus!
I still want an athasian nightmare beast and a warforged dragon mini!
