I agree. Rocks can't hurt an earth elemental. Throwing rocks at them just makes them bigger.

And pollution would be a poison, and we all know that elementals don't have physiology so they are immune to poison, so there goes the water elemental theory.

I could see smog slowing down an air elemental. That one works for me.

A rock should hurt an earth elemental. Hitting a physical thing will usually damage either the thing hit or the thing hitting(or both). I always envisioned elementals as having a will that increased, allowing them to hold more of their element. When stuff got knocked off it would take a while to come back, because the elemental has to focus on healing.

Yeah, I've read the arguments on the first few pages. For the most part, I agree (that energy immunity should go away). I just think fire immunity is appropriate for the fire elemental only. Agree to disagree.

So then the question becomes water and air elementals. Maybe I'm "poisoning" the water or air elemental with the equivalent of polluted air/water? Just because my body is made out of around 70% water.. doesn't mean I can drink polluted water. *shrugs*

I really don't think we're concerned about earth elementals being hurt by rocks right?


I don't see air, water or earth elementals being immune to anything. I don't think the water or air cares if it's polluted- the fish and birds do however. And I'd only make earth elementals immune to rocks, et al, if they were kinetic elementals.

Earth elementals always seemed to be too much like a golem for my tastes.

I always liked the idea of an Earth elemental not caring if you smashed him up. He starts off as a mix of rocks and earth. As you smash the rocks up they just become smaller rocks or sand. Actually, I think it would be kind of cool if Earth elementals had three "flavors": rock, earth/clay, and sand.

Kinda reminds me of palladium elementals (beyond the supernatural style). They were nigh invulnerable IIRC- easily epic solos. I imagine they'd be from the far realm in D&D cosmology. Pure chaos, destruction and Ctulhuism. Personally, I'd still allow magic weapons to damage them but that's me... assuming magic weapons can damage spirits that is.

In a related note (and I apologize if this was mentioned and I missed it), the 4e version of negative energy - 'Necrotic energy' - can damage undead as well (though they all seem to have some resistance to it).

If necrotic damage means decay or rotting, then this makes sense. Enough decay will cause the undead to lose structural integrity.

Maybe not "rotting" skeletons, but the bones they're made of could turn brittle and fall to bits. Now, if they also claim that necrotic energy can harm ghosts, or other entities that have no corporeal substance whatsoever, that'd be another story....
