I, personally, do not understand the concept of racial progression.
For example, when I learn something new, and apply this new knowledge in some situation (basically what experience and gaining class levels in dnd is), I don't get any humaner For example, a dwarven fighter may have a lot of experience spoting enemies with darkvision and he has done it that often, that he now can discern people even at distances, where most other dwarves only see a dark blur. His eyes don't become sharper, but his combat experience gave him the training to know what this blur means, so effectively his darkvision range exceeds by 10ft. or something like that. Humans and Elves don't have darkvision, so no matter how much combat experiance they get, they won't become able to see further in complete darkness. But for example, an elf may learn to get 90% efficency from his elven ears compared to only 70% of other elves, who didn't spend countless nights keeping watch in dark dungeons filled with monsters.

sorry if this has been brought up before, but when the monster manual comes out and if there's gnomes in that (if they are indeed not going to be core) wont we be able to just use the stats from there until they are in the phb? if would just make sense that if they get rid of any race that was core they would at least leave it in the monster manual. i'm just hoping that things wont get completely out of hand and stuff is just completely wiped out of continuity, if gnomes are gone then dwarven pcs should never have heard of them and blah blah blah.

Just as an Elf won't realize that he is getting better at being "Elfy" as he grows in power, because his frame of reference is an elfen one.
Besides, you haven't survived nearly enough life threatening challenges to really grow in power. Certainly, at least, not enough to have grown in power enough to become a paragon of humanity.

I like tiefling more but assimar are cool too. Never played one. It's not that there wont be any assimar, its just that they wont be in the PHB. It looks like this is confirmed, too.
It's embarrassing, really. This is pretty much the definition of pandering.

So, the two races most likely to be created by violence, half orc and half demon, are going to be in the first release. However, a natural race, from actual legends which is what I thought the lean in the newer editions was towards, won't be? :P
