I'll start at the chapter on Combat.
Once the hard part is done I'll be able to enjoy reading the rest of the book.

Once the hard part is done I'll be able to enjoy reading the rest of the book. That's actually a pretty good idea.
I'll probably do the opposite of Akalabeth first (after I lick it, of course) and skim all the table reference thingies (so long as they're like 3.5 with the feat name, prereqs, and the short blurb).
Then I'll put it down, lick the Monster Manual, leaf through it (I'm usually the DM) and put a sticky note on any cool monsters I see.
Then I'll put that down, open the Dungeon Master's Guide (seriously, who licks DMGs?) skip right to the NPC section.

Well, the fist thing I will do when I get my grubby little carnie hands on that PHB is shove it straight up my bottom with excitement!
..Then I'll probably take a gander at the wizard, shortly followed by weapons/armour.

I'll check out the dwarves first because we have very little information on them (what we've found out has been through information given on giants). Then I'll check out the other race entries. Then I'll check out epic destinies, before moving onto items (magical and mundane) before heading over to page 1 I'm largely interested in fluff to begin with to see how it will shape my ideas for my world. MM will involve reading out the PC-playable races to see which, if any, I can slip into my cities (I've already decided to add in gnomes in a particular way no matter what the fluff for them is, although other races I'm willing to put in with fluff unchanged) before reading every single MM entry from beginning to end :D DMG will probably be page 1 to end for me.

Well at least you are keeping an open mind.
The only thing worse than making your mind up about something before you've even seen it is to willfully chose to remain ignorant of it when given the chance to actually make an informed decision.
Enjoy your smug self-satisfaction, the rest of us will be too busy having fun playing D&D to notice. Apparently you guys have your head so far up your own bums to realize it was sarcasm...
Do any of you 4e Avenger types have what the rest of us call a sense of humor? Guess that would be too hard with your head up your bum right?

Apparently you guys have your head so far up your own bums to realize it was sarcasm... That's because it was a terrible attempt at sarcasm, both in concept and execution.
Do any of you 4e Avenger types have what the rest of us call a sense of humor? Calling me a "4e Avenger type" only serves to further illustrate you haven't a clue about what - or whom - you are talking.
Guess that would be too hard with your head up your bum right? Again with the "bum". This seems an unhealthy fixation of yours.

I'll go through the three books, systematically - replacing any fluff that does not agree with my taste in fantasy, then based on what I have found worked or did not mechanically (in my play tests of pre-release material as well as KOTSF), I will start replacing whatever crunch needs it *diagonal movement, I'm looking at you* I will continue replacing mechanics based on what I find works or does not for my groups play style as we slowly work through the levels. By the time we have played to 30, we will have the game that we actually wanted to play, rather than what some overly trendy minded designers THINK we want to play
If that sounds a bit anti4e, it's not. No designers actually have a handle on what every single group of gamers likes, or the style that they enjoy playing in. 4e at least (theoretically) makes it easier for a group to tweak the game into what they want it to be than 3e did (though to be quite honest the 1974 version was probably the best at this particular task)

Page 1 (or whichever page has actual game text instead of credits, indicia, and the table of contents ... probably 4 or 5). Read it cover to cover. Twice. Same here, except that instead of re-reading the PHB, I plan to immediately move on to the MM next & then give the DMG the same treatment.
That reminds me: I need to double-check my calendar & see if I need to book the day off!:D
