It IS NOT DUMBED DOWN. It is streamlined. 3.5 rules are not difficult, they are tedious. People say hard, but more than likely they mean time consuming and tedious.

QFT. There are several things that are extremely tedious in D&D. The fact that I had to create a spreadsheet to track my druid forms emphasizes this.

Several things can happen in combat which just bogs it down: level drain, stat buffs, stat drains, etc.

It's not hard (it's only basic arithmetic), but it takes time. And it gets worse and worse the higher level you are.

Now there are people who like this sort of thing, but I'm guessing most people don't find this part of the game that much fun -- myself included.

More Entrenched Defined Roles: Defines roles is a bad thing. Why do you think we have so many player created classes? No one wants to be "Okay, I heal, and only heal." or "I play tank and only swing my sword." It's boring. You should've made more broad roles for characters, not more specific ones.

I believe roles are more of a guideline for the player and DM, to show the strengths of that class/monster.

Not everyone knows what a paladin is, and the roles help new players figure out what type of character they might be getting into. Since this terminology has been used for years in CRPGS and MMORPGS, it will help people transitioning from these games.

Also, use of these terms in the MM is probably a good thing, as it will allow the DM at a glance to generate an encounter easily (soldier, leader, and whatnot).

Bring back weapon speeds. That is all.

Ugh. Maybe I misremember, but:

: "I begin swinging my 2-Handed Sword at the Magic-User."
: Moves away.
: *whiff* "...errr..."

Let's not forget the "weapon vs AC" table. Talk about cumbersome!

So in response I suggest you look at these concerns with more than a grain of salt because, while this will be a good seller, it's alienating an already shrinking audience. 3.0 lost a little bit of the audience, 3.5 lost a little tiny bit more and 4E will leave another little segment scratching its head.

Err... I think it's generally known sales were declining and fairly poor during the end of 2nd edition.

3.0 actually reinvigorated the D&D brand, as a whole, and the audience (by sales statistics) grew by a great margin from 2nd to 3.0.

On the other hand, there was that atrocity that is DDO that is bad (in marketing terms) for the D&D brand IMHO.

hey, if you guys want to see the rules and mechanics of 4e just look at star wars saga edition. now the skill names might be different, but i bet the mechanics will be the same. yes, they added 10 more class levels, but the saga edition has talent trees, just like 4e will have. so really its not a brand new edition to the gaming community, just a d&d conversion from SWSE.

There will be similarities sure, because both games were in development at the same time in the same place. But one is not a conversion of the other.
