These rules are awesome, as stated elsewhere. It's interesting that most of the dissenters clearly did not RTFA.

e.g. "You only do max damage? That's awful!"

FALSE because there are numerous bonuses and special effects/extra actions. WAY cooler than 3e. And contrary to semi-popular belief, you don't already do max damage 50% of the time. These posters are the same guys who cry to heaven when they don't get all 6s on sneak attacks.

Then there's my favorite "Only PCs get a bonus 1d6 special crit bonus PC-only omgwtfbbq special special extra christmahannukwanzaa gift bonus? I'm gonna house rule that one away MONTHS before the game comes out!"

SILLY because you need to RTFA. ARGH.

I know I'm being mean/using brutal forum police tactics, but I've read this nonsense in too many threads and it hurts my eyes. People need to stop spreading ignorance. Read before posting, lads, read before posting.
Ed_Warlord, on what it takes to make a thread work: I think for it to be really constructive, everyone would have to be honest with each other, and with themselves.

Areleth: How does this help the problems we have with Fighters? Do you think that every time I thought I was playing D&D what I was actually doing was slamming my head in a car door and that if you just explain how to play without doing that then I'll finally enjoy the game?

TD: That's why they put me on the front of every book. This is the dungeon, and I am the dragon.

A word of warning though: I'm totally not a level appropriate encounter.

Firstly, I haven't read all the posts (in fact, I've only read the first page) so please be easy on the "this has been disproven / said before on page 4, post 7!"

I agree with the insta-crit on a 20 and max damage; it speeds up play and it also takes those random spikes of damage out as mentioned earlier by many posters.

Speed:
Remember, this one reduction in dice roll and max damage as opposed to rolling will already speed the fight up, but the real effect comes in when this design principle is applied everywhere it might be feasible. Having two or three 'excess rolls' like SR, wizard damage dice etc taken out all add up to reduce the amount of time rolling dice and adding the numbers up.

Damage multiples
Although I'm no game designer, I'd be willing to wager that it's easier to scale the core mechanics over character levels if you take large multiplications out of it, thus maintaining the 'sweet spot' as mentioned in Races & Classes over a wider range of levels. In my experience as DM, at higher levels the multiples on crits and save-or-die effects made fighting way too random.

A single roll of the dice, be it great-axe crit by a melee type monster or poor saving throw by a player, could result in a reroll or a DM having to fudge to keep the game going. It was simply too random IMHO. I think that tactics should be the prime factor in which way the fight swings, not one lucky or unlucky roll.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy an element of randomness - but there's plenty of that with attack rolls, saving throws and normal damage dice rolling for my tastes, and with the lack of crazy multiples the mystical "average damage" that is always spoken of but never really realized in 3.5 (in my games at least) might actually be seen over an encounter in 4e.

I also agree that with the limited insight provided by the dev article I'm somewhat underwhelmed with a single roll and max damage despite liking it's simplicity, but I'm sure that there's plenty we haven't seen yet to spice this up.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that anything that makes a game better cannot be written in any version of D&D, as it totally relies on the people playing the game - not the game mechanics.

So you'd just as well play story-driven Rock Paper Scissors?

Heh, maybe I spend too much time on Fark, and thus I forget that normal people do not. RTFA is "Read The Article" for those who don't Fark. Sorry!

Should I feel stupid or is that a joke that only makes sense if you're a native English speaker?

No, lack of understanding is normal.

Just ignore the texting code and hope they go away.

I didn't realize the Crit-Mas write up was released in book/manual form. I'm going of the article.
