Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then....I say let 20=critical stand as I know it so far. It scales nicely with the game.

Think about it....anyone that needs the 20 to hit in melee is not going to have some high power/high damage/high bonus effect weapon anyways....so what if the commoner rolls his natural 20 with his improvised club, and gets 6 damage? Whoop-de-do! A base non-magical club will not likely have any bonus critical effects anyways...the commoner lucked out, and bonked him right on the noggin!

Even so, if the "commoner" is swinging a club, and needs to roll that 20, I say let him have his stun (if that is what would happen on a 20)! If he is going to the risk of being in front of an ogre at his skill level, without fleeing for his life like a little school girl, there should be SOME chance of a heroic result (no matter how temporary) as he saves his fleeing family and before the ogre rips him to shreds. That what D&D heroics is all about.

Think Lord of the rings...and the wussy little hobbits with ZERO fighting skills sticking their little toothpick swords into big bad evil dudes! There was a couple 20's in there!

Now, take that same club and place it in the hands of a high level fighter class that has spent some hard earned gold buffing it up. Make it magical with all sorts of bonus effects, extra damage dice etc. Now add the high level fighter type class with his strength, some bonus feats or whatver character enhancement happens....

That fighter rolls the 20, and the damage is more likely to be 30-40 base damage with extra stunning, elemental damage etc.]

I think it will all work out just fine without modification.

At first glance I thought I'd hate this idea, but you know what? It's pretty brilliant.

After all, even if it favours low dice, those dice mean lesser damage, so it should balance out.

I suspect this may become a house rule if the RAW don't cover this particular situation.

Thank you, both of you.
Always nice with some positive feedback

Well there is still some chance with my suggestion, albeit even smaller.

I agree. It probably will. For me it really doesn't matter much if sometimes some creatures either miss or crit. Others thought this was somewhat strange, and I suggested a solution for them to use if they wanted to. I think it's a matter of taste, really.

Personally, I'm curious as to how they will fix spells--when i throw my maximized disintigrate, what will happen when I crit if all crit's do is max damage?

While I did enjoy the variety of critical abilities in different weapons, it did lead to some incongruous abilities that were--hopefully--never intended. I'll miss having my scythe master run around and deal 4x damage on a 15-20 threat. Bwahahaha!

Does anyone know if undead and Constructs (and annoying fighters with 100% fortification) will still be immune to criticals?

As far as I know, maximize doesn't exist anymore, and disintegrate probably wont do Xd6 damage either.

And how did you get a 15-20 Scythe? As far as I know, the only way to get a Scythe lower than 19-20 is with Disciple of Dispater, and AFAIR, your crit range should be wider than 6 with that class.
