I forget if they are doing an Prerequisites for feats or not in 4e. But wouldn't it make sense to have a minimum prerequisite in STR and CON for Medium and Heavy armors rather than trying to deal with Max DEX?

For example:

Armor Proficiency (Medium)

Prerequisites: Armor Proficiency (light), STR 13, CON 11

Actually a good idea. Fighters should get those feats for free, ignoring strength and con requirements.

It doesn't seem right that a fighter could ignore those prerequisites. Makes no sense to have a fighter with a 11 STR and 10 CON running around in Full Plate. If you don't have the strength to carry the weight no amount of training is going to make you good at wearing heavy armor.

Doesn't matter how strong you are, metal hingings and thick leather only bends so much so fast. It's cumbersome, and even if you were hercules would put a damper on your movement. Hence Max Dex. Move any faster than that, and you're probably doing damage to your armor, especially if you're so strong. Besides, historically it was feasible for normal people to wear full plate, but they didn't do much other than wear it. That's why there's armor check; it's massive penalties incurred on Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Sleight of Hand, and Tumble checks (double penalties for swim). If they aren't proficient, it applies to everything they do using Strength or Dex. Both numbers serve different purposes. MDB represents the inability to avoid hits while wearing cumbersome armor, ACP represents the inability to do everything else

Whats that word? .... "Magic".

Magic armor should bend, weigh less, and not hamper Dexterity.

Normally you dont bring real physics into fantasy games (or at least you shouldnt after all its a fantasy game)but, Ive worn actual battle armor before and while it does limit your movement to an extent it that guy that can do cartwheels using only one hand can probably still use cartwheels using one hand....the mechanic should be changed some. I would suggest something at least minutely detrimental...like a negative dex modifier for AC...idk also while armor does slow you down if you are truly proficient in it it will not hobble your movement like the current game mechanic does.

And there are enchantments that do that... use them.

If you have high enough skill in tumble, you can still do that. Armor Check penalty for Full Plate is a -6. Max Dex Bonus only affects AC. A straight penalty to Dex should just be referenced as a reduction in armor bonus, it would simplify things. Any other skill checks possibly affected by armor is instead influenced by your Armor Check Penalty.

oh I know when I was typing that I was visualizing B-rated kung fu movies where they dodge bullets by doing cartwheels. one of the problems with those enchantments is that they get expensive, quickly I might add.

I'm not sure what the beef is about MDB. At worst it only makes it so you're as nimble as the average human. That's not really that bad is it? People seem to state how easy it is to do things in armour, but I say the rules reflect that accurately already.

The Piazza

A renaissance of the Old Worlds.
Where any setting can be explored, any rules system discussed, and any combination of the two brought to life.
