I'm betting on: Human, Elf, Dwarf, Half-elf, Gnome, Halfling, Kobold, Aasimar, Tiefling a pair of big guys (Orc, Gnoll, Minotaur, Centaur, Ogre or something like that) and a Feyish smaller race. I think there would be a ton of races to choose from in 4th ed. Player's Handbook.
I would be sad if gnome is removed, maybe they need a re-work to be more popular, something closer to what gnomes are in the Dragonlance world, crazily obsessed little scientists on an eternal sugar rush.

You mean they're not like that already?
Wise words on how to conceal a polymorphed dragon from detection. . .
I HOPE they turn the gnome (my favorite class) back into tinkerers/architects like in 2e, though if I had to put money on it, I think they will omit the gnome from base races. Que sad Brock Samson.
I would also like to see a "green skin" race. From everyone's postings on here, the concensus seems to be kobold. I'd be all about that.
Finally, let's have a gentle giant-esque class. The Half-Orc in 3.5 is more like a raging berserker-type than a lumbering PC. Possibly a form of Ogre-Magi or Half-Giant (loved them in Dark Sun in 2e) could fill in nicely.

I'd like to see all of the current core races along with a wide variety of planetouched (aasimar, tiefling and genasi to start, reworked without any LA). I'm not a huge fan of making kobolds and goblins PHB races, though all the info to play them in the MM would be perfectly fine (this coming from someone who played and loved playing a goblin character).
As far as updates to the races: absolutely agree with removing the racial hatred bonuses; support all of the abilities that races are given (when was the last time anyone had "orc blood" or "elven blood" actually come up in game?); don't make humans the overwhelmingly best choice for most builds (probably has more to do with reworking the feat system than anything about the actual races); remove or severely rework the favored class mechanic.

I'm actually wondering about that myself-- from the image on the D&D countdown (the woman with horns and small fangs), it looks like tieflings or some creature like them may well be a bigger part of the core rules. I'm not sure if that indicates the tiefling was made into a base race or if they just integrated playing as "monster" characters more closely with the core rules. (Something I'm sure many would like to see.)
I hope they don't do the human-like skill points for half-elves. Right now half-elves can be chosen to excel at diplomacy and gather info (exceeding the cap a human would have). That gives them a special niche in the world. If you replaced that with human-like skill points then what are they? Humans that count as elves? I'd like a little more distinction between the races.
My wishlist: Goblins, orcs, kobolds(maybe beefed up a bit), and maybe re-worked gnolls (that can be played from level 1). These all exist in most D&D settings and have an established precident of spawning adventurers (even non-evil adventurers). Aasimar and Tieflings (hopefully scaled down to LA +0): these are nicely flavorful choices that again already exist in the various worlds and spawn adventurers. And have the further advantage of fitting into human society fairly well. Changelings and Shifters: While these are currently Ebberon only, they are hybrids of humans with other races that do exist in most D&D settings. Adding these wouldn't be a bad idea either.
While we're on the topic, it'd be nice to have more racial-uniqueness from the get go. How about 5-10 racial feats per race and 2-3 racial substitution progressions in core? Maybe have humans get nothing unique but keep their racial bonus feat and skill points (keeping up their role as the ultimate generalists).
And since someone asked, the last time "elven blood" came up in a game for me was when the GM had to discuss with me whether my human ex-grey elf (via Reincarnate) had blood that was human or elf as it tied in with the evil ritual going on at the time.
I hope this is all a windup as I about 2 weeks ago I updated to 3.5 :*(
My player type: Storyteller - You're more inclined toward the role playing side of the equation and less interested in numbers or experience points. You're quick to compromise if you can help move the story forward, and get bored when the game slows down for a long planning session. You want to play out a story that moves like it's orchestrated by a skilled novelist or film director 100% Storyteller 100%" Method Actor 100% Casual Gamer 67% Tactician 25% Power Gamer

Well, if it isn't (and I don't think it is at this point), you may be able to return the books if it has only been 2 weeks. Assuming you're willing to make do with the SRD for another 9 months.
