They want to improve the game before they publish it, not use the playtest as some sort of marketing strategy. Or maybe a bit of both and news of the system would certainly get wide when played in a game shop. Bad side (for business) would be that both good and bad sides would be revealed for all potential buyers.

Here's a question I don't expect people to be able to answer. I play with 2 groups. Should I be blessed with the xerox napkins of 4E, would I be allowed to test with both groups?

Frankly I thing playtesting now would be a mute point considering that you have to have the final product at the printers very shortly to make your release date of May 08. I would like to see some of the character make ups and the character generator along with some of the other items you discussed in your speech avalible now so we can get an idea of just what your doing and if it will be worth investing our money in it or not.

I don't think game shops will work. You have to sign an NDA, and if any of it leaks, you are responsible. A self contained gaming group isn't that bad, but a bunch of people getting involved drastically increases the chances of leakage.
I'm pretty sure WOTC is looking for testers in private little gaming groups. I'd imagine any sort of public testing would be frowned on or might even be considered an outright NDA violation in itself. It depends on the NDA of course, but I don't think this is what WOTC has in mind.
Remember folks (and this is not directed specifically at you Acear), this is a serious playtest, not a "try before you buy" gimmick. They want to improve the game before they publish it, not use the playtest as some sort of marketing strategy.
At least, as far as I know... marketing people are weird. I could be wrong. Hmm, I really haven't thought about the game shop issue. I guess that it could be done after the game shop closes up. That would prevent passers by getting a glimps in, but you could still NDA the group. On the other hand I could drop the game shop in a heartbeat.
I was on the playtest for Wizkids Mage Knight Dungeon game. So I know how NDA's can go. I even our group suggested to Wizkids how players can attack other players that was finally put into the final rule set. (Although I can't say that we weren't the only ones that solution.)
Basicly my recollections of playtesting was a lot of wash, rinse, repeat, record the results and gather opinions. I'm good with that.

Playtesting: Playtest packets are coming together. I worked a bit yesterday with our Legal folks on the logistics for the NDAs. Suffice it to say that just as in previous playtests, mum's the word from the testers. They don't even admit that they are playtesters. We R&D guys can talk more of course, and we intend to.
I know a lot of folks are waiting for their chance to contribute. It's coming soon, but any estimate I give could be off by +/- two days. So no promises. If you want to be eligible to contribute, assemble a group of six (DM and five players) people who are cool with NDAs and are reliable enough to show up at your table and participate meaningfully.[/quote] So here's the latest. Sounds like it's just around the corner.
But yeah, no game shop games. As I assumed, this is going to be pretty hush-hush. WOTC obviously doesn't want to turn away potential players with untested and unfinished rules, and who can blame them?

I'm currently reorganizing my gaming group for 4ed testing should we be given the privilege. I hope it's as great as everyone says it's gonna be.

My question is do they all need to sign up for D&D insider in order to participate in the playtest? I am signed up (DM) but some of my players haven't (they dont generally surf the site like I do). Do I need to strong arm all of them to sign up for D&D Insider? Thanks, --AOM

There's a new D&D Podcast that talks about playtesting. It mentions that we're still probably two weeks away, though I might optimistically hope that it wasn't recorded today. Also it reiterates that you need (1) to have a D&DI account, (2) are able to demonstrate that you have a group ready (no idea how you demonstrate), and (3) watch the D&DI page for updates. I think the idea with (2) is that if they pick you to play, they don't want to hear about any issues of not having a group. I imagine they expect everyone to be able to hit the ground running when they hand out the playtest packets. So carry on, and good gaming!

I have a DDI account. My group is ready and eager to start. I have 10+ years of DMing experience. My 6 members group includes a good mix of players (newbies/oldtimers, male/female, age 10-32, mostly 22-25).
