I stare at this strange and somewhat cold creature WotC has become (maybe has always been, I have simply been too blind to see) and ask the same. It is low. And the worst thing is, we both know that people will give them money for this 'additional feature'. I agree. I can understand the desire to prevent pirates from stealing the product, but this seems like a pretty sleazy way to do it. "We don't want anybody to steal our stuff, so if you're honest and you want all of what's available, you have to pay twice."
As for the price: "... can't say right now but I guess about the cost of a coffee (what I can't say is if it drip or a Starbucks triple vente chocolate mocha.)" I think anyone with any common sense will know which end of that scale the price will be on.

Will Living Greyhawk be supported, or will the launch of 4th edition mean the end of the world wide campaign?

Please explain to me how you (WotC) can justify charging a second fee to un-lock online use of a product you've just purchased?? Even if it's just $0.99, that's pretty bloody low, if you ask me. Funny, I thought that was how economics was supposed to work. You offer something at a reasonable price, and if there's demand for the product/service at that price, it'll sell. If the product is overpriced or of low quality, it won't.

A lot of other questions answered here: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=908068
Good info about questions I've seen multiple times on these boards. ok... several things pop out, good and bad.
Skills are getting hosed. Looks like the SaGa rules are in full effect here and having any skills outside of combat will be a spur of the moment "I can cook" type of thing.
The Warlock seems to be left out of core, which is expected somewhat, but disappointing.
The Wizard and Sorcerer are still two seperate classes. Why I couldn't even begin to say, but the only reason Sorcerer is around in the first place is that the Fire and Forget system of magic was reconized as flawed and was kept anyway. The sorcerer was added to provide a patch and alternative.
It is good that they have changed the magic system. The way it is being talked about, it seems the wizard will still mem spells but will be able to use them as a sorcerer uses his known spells. Don't know if Spell points (Mana!!) is being done, but they did address it and the old "fire and Forget" system is mostly gone somehow.
No more XP cost to create items... YAY!!
The change to PrC is hopefully slanted toward keeping the unique ones (Shadow Dancer and such) while tossing the combo PrC that are basically two classes put into one.
With book expansions having to be online to use, it looks like the Character Generator will be chained to the net. I wonder if you even get to save your character on your own computer instead of leaving it online?
ECL being gone (i think) is a good thing.
Overall, not a great beginning, but it fills me with hope.
I just want three things now.
- The Half orcs not be a core playable race
- The Warlock class to be included
- The Bard to have something other than "Music" to describe his class features. It can be used through music, prouse, comedy, insults, flattery and other ways. Storytelling is the main way I used a bard in 2nd ed. and I could not do that in 3rd.
Terms you should know... Spoiler:
Show
Kit Build - A class build that is self sustaining and has mechanical differences than the normal scale. Started in Essentials. Most are call their own terms, though the Base Class should be said in front of their own terms (Like Assassin/Executioner)
Power Points - A mechanic that was wedged into the PHB3 classes (with the exception of the Monk) from the previous editions. This time, they are used to augment At Wills to be Encounters, thus eliminating the need to choose powers past 4th level. Mage Builds - Kit builds that are schools of magic for the Wizard. A call back to the previous editions powering up of the wizard. (Wizard/Necromancer, for example) Unlike the previous kit builds, Wizards simply lose their Scribe Rituals feature and most likely still can choose powers from any build, unlike the Kit Builds.
Parcel System - A treasure distribution method that keeps adventurers poor while forcing/advising the DM to get wish lists from players. The version 2.0 rolls for treasure instead of making a list, and is incomplete because of the lack of clarity about magic item rarity.

They will Essentialize the Essentials classes, otherwise known as Essentials2.
The new sub-sub-classes will be:
* Magician. A subsubclass of Mage, the magician has two implements, wand and hat, one familiar (rabbit) and series of basic tricks. * Crook. A subsubclass of Thief, the Crook can only use a shiv, which allows him to use his only power... Shank. * Angry Vicar, a subsubclass of warpriest, the angry vicar has two attacks -- Shame and Lecture. * Hitter. A subsubclass of Slayer, the Hitter hits things. * Gatherer. A subsubclass of Hunter, it doesn't actually do anything, but pick up the stuff other players might leave behind.
Future Essentials2 classes include the Security Guard (Sentinel2), the Hexknife (Hexblade2), the Webelos (Scout2), the Gallant (Cavalier2) and the Goofus (Knight2).
These will all be detailed in the box set called Heroes of the Futile Marketing.
(Though what they should really release tomorrow is the Essentialized version of the Witchalok!)

Video games and table top games are completely different and shouldn't be treated the same as if they weren't.

It isn't a reasonable price. It is D&D, not a cheap porn site. Video games and table top games are completely different and shouldn't be treated the same as if they weren't. It's a perfectly reasonable price.
I don't get all the wacky reactions to the DDi thing. It is something that they are not currently providing for you now, so you can easily ignore it when it comes out and nothing will change for you.
Should you choose to utilize these new services, expect to pay a fee. paying for new types of services isn't exactly a new idea in this world.

I have this reaction because they are replace E-Tools (or RPG Forge from CMP) with an online only character creator that will, more than likely, be inferior to the product that they yanked.
And instead of paying 30 bucks and taking it home, you have to pay a monthly fee to "access" it and keeping paying to continue to use it.
It is overpriced. period.

Simple, go buy the one you like best, for the price you are willing to pay.
