I decided that, despite its similarities to the squid, I'd finish up the giant orthocone I started way back on page 44.

Edit 1.1: Noted that improved grab is an extraordinary ability.

Giant Orthocone

Large Animal (Aquatic)
Hit Dice: 6d8+18 (39 hp)
Initiative: +0
Speed: Swim 60 ft. (12 squares)
Armor Class: 18 (–1 size, +9 natural), touch 9, flat-footed 18
Base Attack/Grapple: +4/+15*
Attack: Tentacles +7 melee (1d6+3)
Full Attack: Tentacles +7 melee (1d6+3) and bite +2 melee (1d8+1)
Space/Reach: 10 ft./5 ft. (10 ft. with tentacles)
Special Attacks: Constrict 1d6+3, improved grab
Special Qualities: Jet, low-light vision
Saves: Fort +8, Ref +6, Will +3
Abilities: Str 16, Dex 10, Con 15, Int 1, Wis 12, Cha 4
Skills: Hide –4, Listen +7, Spot +8, Swim +11
Feats: Alertness, Toughness (2)
Environment: Any aquatic
Organization: Solitary
Challenge Rating: 3
Treasure: None
Alignment: Always true neutral
Advancement: 7–12 HD (Large); 13–18 HD (Huge)
Level Adjustment:

The majority of this creature’s body is made up by an enormous, conical shell the color of ivory. From the larger end erupts a mass of tentacles; at the center of this mass is the creature's tiny head.

Giant orthocones are prehistoric relatives of squid and other cephalopods. Though they feed mostly on fish and other marine animals smaller than themselves, they may mistake humanoid creatures or even boats as prey and become a large nuisance for shipping lanes. Most specimens are between 12 to 15 feet in length and weigh about 300 pounds, but much larger individuals measuring as 30 feet or more in length are not unknown.

Combat
Giant orthocones rely on their size and brute strength in combat, grabbing a single creature in its tentacles and pulling it close enough to bite. If badly wounded, they will attempt to flee by jetting away from their opponents.

Constrict (Ex): A giant orthocone deals 1d6+3 points of damage with a successful grapple check.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a giant orthocone must hit an opponent of any size with a tentacle attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can constrict. *A giant orthocone has a +4 racial bonus on grapple checks.

Jet (Ex): A giant orthocone can jet backward once per round as a full-round action, at a speed of 240 feet. It must move in a straight line, but does not provoke attacks of opportunity while jetting.

Skills: A giant orthocone has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.

Giant Orthocone Animal Companions
A giant orthocone is an appropriate animal companion for a druid of at least 7th level, or a ranger of at least 14th-level, provided they are in an aquatic environment.

New Skill Use: Scent Tracking (Survival)
Like the ability to track signs and tracks in the ground, Survival can be used by creatures to sniff the air for signs. Even some humans have developed this knack over time. This usage of Survival is designed to better help replicate the various aspects of animals that "track", but not with the typical "tracks and scat" sense of the word.

Scent Tracking Use------------Survival DC

  • Track Fine-Tiny creature-------DC 30
  • Track Small creature-----------DC 25
  • Track Medium creature---------DC 20
  • Track Large creature-----------DC 15
  • Track Huge-Colossal creature---DC 10

Conditions---------------------DC Alteration

  • Tracker has Scent-------------DC -4
  • Creature has stench-----------DC -4
  • Winds coming from the East----DC +2
  • Creature has sloughed
its scent in water or mud-------DC +3
  • Creature is of the plant type----DC +4
  • It has rained in the past 3 hours-DC +2
  • Creature has an alien or
  • aberrant smell------------------DC -6

I really like this usage of Survival - I feel it is more intuitive to the way people actually operate, and complements the basic usage of the Survival Skill. I am also a big fan of those feats and the Primordial Hunter prestige.

I love the Orthocone write-up (that is a compliment; not a critique - since I am not a very good stat balancer). Good work! :D Also, much obliged on the updated list... I will update my list of needs as well, as well as which other creatures I may steal from JollyRotten's other web page. Would that person be found anywhere other than these boards these days, perhaps? A Facebook, or a MySpace even? I have PMed pretty much everyone I could see in first glance with my pleas to return to correct me in thinking what could be thought and mis-thought in dinos and prehistoric animals, as well as dire and fictional creatures. Beasties PREVAIL!

Also, someone is asking me about dino-anthros and other monstrous humanoids suitable to this kind of setting... Which is also something I am going to focus on to make a few prehistoric guardinal creatures, as well as a set of Pre-Companions to the group of Guardinal Leaders in Book of Exalted Deeds. Any suggestions for that? I think I may have seen something about it in Serpent Kingdoms at one time... ????

Updates to my own post up there in terms of need is coming next. Thank you all!

I believe you are thinking of the saurials, which are available in the Serpent Kingdoms web enhancement (link). I should also note that warforged51092 did some work on saurials here, including two completely new subraces.

I think you are right about the Saurials. I have those saved now. I may have to do a little tweaking for some kind of dino-anthro races.... Or else skip that part and simply go straight for the information on dino and dire-guardinals..... Any favorite beasties for when I make a form of prehistoric Talisid and the Five Companions? I would love to take suggestions.

I am not sure what to say about the Komodo dragons. I thought it was pretty much common knowledge: if a komodo bites you, it could kill you. How is it that someone got so curious as to WHY you might die when one bit you seems rather absurd to me.... But I guess now we can add it to the encyclopedia. :/ >.>

I changed the text color, and even said why it was that color (and not unintentionally illegible). I also updated that list of my current needs and all materials I have looked through here. I think it is pretty much set now. Orthocone was not really on my list, otherwise I would have jumped for joy this last round of posts. :P

Skull Island is a neat idea, and I saw a few in there that looked usable... But again, it is another thread that needs a completely compiled and revised list on a stickeyed posting or something..... I can only page through so much at one time in one sitting when looking for this info. I love these races (and would have simply been coming up with on-the-fly stats), but searching through every post for the completely necessary is quite time consuming as it is right now.... So I will stick with what we have got here......... Unless you can think of something I might be missing that could be found there from the list I have above (updated today, 5-20-2009).
Thanks,
-will

There's been a long debate over whether Komodos were simply venomous (which is unknown in a lizard their size) or their saliva was rife with bacteria.

Lemme peek through your list and I'll make some critters soon :D
