I am not saying this is real, or anything, but is there any kind of pre-historic octupus or squid that hasn't been done? I know there was a Nautilus type creature, but I don't recall that it was big enough to be useful in game.

The giant orthocone could grow over 30 feet in length, but that's the only one I know of off the top of my head. Looks like I have my first project.

Yeah, that thing!! Wow, I didn't know it got that big...

Hmm, I suddenly have a vision of one of these things acting like a living torpedo. I can only imagine that a 30ft living spike spearing your ship would have to be a lot less than good...

When an orthocone throws its weight around and you're in a wooden boat, you know you're screwed. I eagerly await its arising, and add this contribution to critters. He may not be the biggest critter in the bag, but he is definately not something you want to mess with.

  • D&D Fluff: Acanthostega are some of the most primitive tetrapods you'll find in the murky swamps of the Southlands, eight-toed on each wristless limb, lunged yet not carrying a ribcage that could support it for much time on land, as well as gilled like a fish. Acanthostega are indeed rarely seen, other than the times the pop up to the surface of the weedy murk to take a gulp of air or snatch a bug. With two sharp rows of teeth, picking up an acanthostega from his weed-filled home in the oxygen-poor shallow swamps is generally not recommended. Compounding this is another, more unusual defense. Like some salamanders, acanthostega can secrete a foul and quite sticky slime. This is used by some of the swamp-dwellers as makeshift glue.
  • Sticky Secretion (Ex): As a move action, twice per day, an acanthostega grappled by an opponent may release a sticky secretion. If the target is holding the acanthostega with his hands, he has a -6 penalty to Dexterity as his fingers are glued together. The glue either wears off in 2d6 hours or can be broken with a Strength check (DC 16). A creature that has bitten onto the acanthostega and received the secretion cannot bite, and the same wearing off and breaking rules apply. A biter, however, has a 35% of having some of the glue dislodge into its throat after breaking it, dealing 1d4 points of damage as it rasps into the throat.

Skill: Dire Thingie T Rexes have a +2 Racial bonuses to Listen and Spot checks

Improved Grab (Ex): If the T-Rex successfully bites an opponent up to 1 Size Class smaller it may immediately make a Grapple Check as a Free Action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins it can swallow it's opponent in the following round.

Swallow Whole (Ex): A T-Rex can try to swallow a grabbed opponent up to 2 Size Classes smaller than itself. The swallowed creature takes 4d8+18 points of bludgeoning damage and 18 points of acid damage per round. Heh, I'd like to think so. The ability was based upon something that some of the ambystomid salamanders perform. I have had the unfortunate experience of having my index and middle fingers "slimed" by a small spotted salamander in one of my little nature walks. Basically, I just took my own experience and upsized it to make something not in the fossil record but biologically plausible. I also have a preview of my next creature.
