Technically the real question being asked here is "in the majority of D&D campaigns, realistically speaking, is the Fighter a liability?" Wel, I don't think most campaign enforce all characters to have out-combat abilities.

For years, I've lived a double life. In the day, I do my job - I ride the bus, roll up my sleeves with the hoi-polloi. But at night, I live a life of exhilaration, of missed heartbeats and adrenalin. And, if the truth be known a life of dubious virtue. I won't deny it - I've been engaged in violence, even indulged in it. I've maimed and killed adversaries, and not merely in self-defence. I've exhibited disregard for life, limb and property, and savoured every moment. You may not think it, to look of me but I have commanded armies, and conquered worlds. And though in achieving these things I've set morality aside, I have no regrets. For though I've led a double life, at least I can say - I've lived.

Scipio: And Chihuahuas have definitely improved in the "attacking ankles, yapping, and being generally annoying" environment. Me: OK, am I the only who sees an analogy between forum trolls & Chihuahuas?

I thought it was a curve, mapping knowledge of mechanics/class/... onto power. - Fighter starts low (you require only basic knowledge about the game to make a somewhat effective fighter), while Wizard starts high (you not only need to know the basics, but also how spells work + you need to select your spells + knowledge when to use your spells, ...) - For high power (at the end of the curve), Fighter is extremly high (you need much knowledge to make an effective fighter) While for wizards it isn't (you need only some knowledge more for your high power wizard) A learning curve maps on to optimization over experience. You may conclude that this means power, but that would be wrong. A commoner has a steep learning curve (equivalent to a barbarian, approximately) but remains poor no matter your level of experience or optimization. (By this I mean below every other class) Even if you say a fighter has a high learning curve, this isn't a good thing. It means it's hard to learn to optimize and use properly, but actually says nothing about comparative power.

It means it's hard to learn to optimize and use properly. Well, that could indeed my conclusion. its harder to do that for a fighter, then to do that with a wizard. But that still makes him IMO far from a waist of space, as I tend to play optimized fighters, who can stand their ground ...

So where were we in this food fight? I like this topic better. It actually has a point.

It actually has a point. The only point I see is the fork. Explain.
