I am a relative new comer to D&D. I picked up the books and was blown away by the possibilities. I am proud to say I'm a DM, its very rewarding and I actually do it as part of my job. Can you believe it? I get paid to play Dungeons and Dragons! Crazy huh? Any who, I was reading some of the post about 4e and how it is compared to 3.5 and wow, I messed up rules wise all over the place. I had no idea spell casters could do criticals with spells, I thought that was only a weapons thing. My bad. So I decided that while I figure out all the odds and ends I'll keep a couple of things in mind as personal rules so I don't screw anyone too bad. The core mechanic, which I've been faithful to, and continuity in what ever rules I use. What can I say its a learning process. Also just wondering, can a wizard write a spell from a scroll into his/her spell book or are scrolls one shot deals?

The core mechanic, which I've been faithful to, and continuity in what ever rules I use. What can I say its a learning process. Also just wondering, can a wizard write a spell from a scroll into his/her spell book or are scrolls one shot deals? Well, a few clarifications:
This particular section of the forum is for 4th Edition discussion, so don't assume that 4E rules are the same at the version you're playing (3.5)
For example, casters in 3.5 can only crit on spells that require a touch attack (like Ray-based spells).
As for copying a scroll to your spellbook, yes, you can - the rules can be found in the Player's Handbook, but here's a clip from the SRD:
Spells Copied from Another’s Spellbook or a Scroll
A wizard can also add a spell to her book whenever she encounters one on a magic scroll or in another wizard’s spellbook. No matter what the spell’s source, the wizard must first decipher the magical writing (see Arcane Magical Writings, above). Next, she must spend a day studying the spell. At the end of the day, she must make a Spellcraft check (DC 15 + spell’s level). A wizard who has specialized in a school of spells gains a +2 bonus on the Spellcraft check if the new spell is from her specialty school. She cannot, however, learn any spells from her prohibited schools. If the check succeeds, the wizard understands the spell and can copy it into her spellbook (see Writing a New Spell into a Spellbook, below). The process leaves a spellbook that was copied from unharmed, but a spell successfully copied from a magic scroll disappears from the parchment.
If the check fails, the wizard cannot understand or copy the spell. She cannot attempt to learn or copy that spell again until she gains another rank in Spellcraft. A spell that was being copied from a scroll does not vanish from the scroll.
In most cases, wizards charge a fee for the privilege of copying spells from their spellbooks. This fee is usually equal to the spell’s level

As a general rule, any spell that requires an attack roll can crit. Not just touch attacks.
