I have had a rather rapid succession of taking over a small town gaming shop in August, becoming Core Level in October, and I am now facing my first Prerelease. I am rather excited, though vastly inexperienced.
My main question involves the intro packs I am receiving. Obviously, prerelease product is not for sale for the general public. However, upon asking- it seemed that the intro packs were for people that wished to do "free play", that wished to stay and play but not necessarily in the sealed prerelease tournament. I've also heard of a store that sells intro packs with a card to record wins against other intro packs, and if a player won so many matches against other players with intro packs, they'd receive an additional booster pack.
What are other's experiences with different ideas involving intro packs, prerelease and otherwise?

Welcome! Always good to hear about the success of other T.O.s out there! Prerelease's are rather exciting events. The players enjoy coming out for the new cards and they love getting them early. My advice is run as many prerelease events as you can. Foster their excitement for the game and the new cards by helping them get more packs before the release. Give them booster drafts, sealed events, 2 headed Giant, and anything else you are able. As for Open Play. I've tried it and failed. In my area the players that play in tournaments don't tend to buy intro packs unless they have some bomb cards in them. That said, I think Open Play is a great way to get new players into tournaments without scaring them with the concept of having to build a competitive deck on the fly. Part of my failure with Open Play has been poor advertising. I suspect if I advertised it better, we'd actually get more players interested in it. One final thought: When it comes to Prereleases, I never enforce the rules more strictly than the Judging at Regular REL document. Players should come to have fun and learn the cards. They don't need an overbearing mongrul standing over their shoulder scolding them for missing the new keyword triggered ability. They just need to relax and have fun. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask. There are always knowledgeable T.O.s on here eager to help. Just my two cents,

My players absolutely loved Open Dueling. I went through a full box of intro packs at each of the following events:
Scars Launch Party Scars Prerelease M11 Launch Party M11 Prerelease
Too bad for them, me, and Wizards that I can no longer host Prereleases and Launch Parties.

Back when the prereleases were only at big events, they would charge 15 bucks for the intro pack and give you a sheet to get signed after you played another player. After 5 signatures you'd get a pack of the new set.
