I'm sure part of it is also from brick & mortar retailers that aren't seeing the sales they used to see. With the bad economy many retailers are hurting and are looking for people to blame. So why not blame non-store event organizers since they take away so much business from the local game stores.
In reality its not the out of store events thats hurting, its the big internet retailers. When anybody can go online and buy a sealed box for what most brick & mortar stores pay wholesale for it makes it hard to compete with the online retailers. Between those big online stores and the many auction websites most local gaming stores are hurting.
I actually think that having non-store TOs helps promote the product and more is sold. This is a bad move for wizards. It seems not too long ago they were trying to make events and prize support more available to the players, which was the whole reason for the formation of the WPN. Now they are going back to the way they did it prior to the WPN, where you have to be a retail store in order to get any type of prize support.
This isn't so suprising with all the cuts they've been making in other areas, like stopping support for several games all together and then no longer rewarding D&D players and most recently dropping DM rewards for non-store DMs and finally doing away with the reward program entirely. Sure they say the rewards will be shipped with the game day kits, but I'm not holding my breath for anything exciting.
It feels as if Wizards has become less concerned with the way players and organizers feel ever since they were aquired by Hasbro. The big company just wants profits and doesn't care how they make them.
How to report a bug in Wizards Event Reporter Software (WER) Spoiler:
Show
If you encounter a bug in the Wizards Event Reporter, it would be most helpful to have a report on the issue.
To better determine the cause of the bug, it would be helpful if you would attach three WER files: - reporter.log - updater.log (The software might create this file - if you are unable to locate it, this is fine.)
The path for those files is: XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Wizards of the Coast\Event Reporter\logs Vista: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Wizards of the Coast\Event Reporter\logs
The other file needed is: - TournamentData.dat (The software might not create this file, or it may be listed as TournamentData).
The path for this file is: XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Wizards of the Coast\Event Reporter Vista: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Wizards of the Coast\Event Reporter
If you are unable to use the path for these files, please use the search function in Windows.
- Click “Start”
- Then mouseover the “Search” option.
- Click “For Files or Folders”
- Enter each file name and click 'search'
- Right-click on the file and save a copy of the file to your desktop.
- Now you are ready to submit your bug.
To submit your bug please submit the information here.

It's still open for me to sanction FNM in November. I would check once more to make sure you can't sanction it and then contact your WPN Rep today to figure out what's going on.

Rough translation of the final post of the webmaster of www.germagic.de a major german community site. The webmaster also owns deckcheck.net. The site will go offline next friday. This is (roughly) what he wrote: Germagic.de is dead.It has finally come to this, and Wizards did it.Due to the recent WPN changes, I think there's so much going wrong that I wonder: Why should I care? Why should I go on supporting a game that doesn't support it's players? Therefore, I will stop any efforts around germagic.de, take offline this very site and all affiliated sites (such as deckcheck.net) and this will be it. I will stop supporting tournaments as many player-run communities will. There will be no online archive, so if anyone who has written something on germagic.de wants to keep their blog posts / articles, send me an email. The domains will remain my property, and I will not sell them.Personally, this means I'm not attending Grand Prix Bochum nor any other DCI sanctioned tournaments. Anything else would be wrong for me. After the announcement yesterday, my motivation to officially turn cards sideways is just gone.Obligatory statements:Thanks for reading the site all these years [site exists since 1999, - N]!A much bigger "thank you", if you took the time to participate! There are many people that deserve "Thank you's", so I won't list names. It'll be easier for me to [censored, just polish your German and you'll get why. - N]Farewell!PS: If anyone thinks that the changes are great because they support the local shops (cause they are the backbone of every community (which I think is NOT the case, as I experienced many times)), listen: Most local shops put themselves in that situation. Show me a shop owner with a little economic understanding and I'll show you a well-run shop. Just because someone runs a hobby store doesn't mean he should be running it as if it IS "just" hobby.- END - This site is a major pillar of the German Magic community. It posts News to the front page, has a event calendar, a lively (if sometimes a little abrasive) blogosphere with topics ranging from Limited, Constructed to Casual Magic. The affiliated site deckcheck.net is an internationally respected and well-used decklist archive with many unparalleled features the webmaster developed himself. In Germany, there are many player-run communities simply because many towns don't have any hobby stores, or don't have any stores that are willing to cooperate. I understand that Wizards wants to prevent the not shop-associated TOs from reporting fake tournaments and reaping Promos to sell off, but this step - at least for Germany - is just plain wrong. EDIT: Spelling, grammar, minor semantical corrections.

Upercgb, I'm not sure why you're getting that error. BrianF posted here presenting another error where Advanced TOs can't schedule more than 1 FNM per Friday. I don't usually run FNM, so I haven't tried to do either of these things myself, but I would try again on Monday and if it fails contact your local Rep.

This is like some sort of horror story, why WOTC, WHY?
We run a small club in the centre of Sussex, England. The nearest stores are 25miles away, neither of which is capable of hosting FNM's in house due to size. One runs fnm on a thursday in a function room at a pub (which they get for free, luckily, as it doesn't get used much on Thursday and this way brings in extra revenue for the pub owner). With these changes that will stop. Our club will also HAVE to stop FNM's as we are not shop affli'd. The nearest Pre-release will be central London, which is CONSIDERABLY more expensive to play, a lot less personal and most of our current members will not attend (because we run not for profit we run a LOT cheaper which makes it an affordable day out for our attendees).
How is this in ANY way good for the hobby?
There will no longer any FNM in our area that's within any sort of reasonable reach that doesn't involve leaving work early every week to drive to the event. One other factor, we book our venue (a Community centre) a year in advance; so even if we were shop affli'd how do they expect us to change all those booked dates to a Fri night.
WOTC- this policy is set to destroy large elements of the WPN, leave hundreds of players without regular venues, and WILL lose you players (yes this means you will be LOSING MONEY- wake up!)
