Billbo;  Thanks for a very comprehensive reply.  You have covered the topic well.

Storeowner;  I consider you and the judge to both be at fault.  You obviously made and operated on assumptions without specific dialogue.  If I were you I would mark this page in my life as a lesson learned and make sure I was clear with others in the future.  If what he has done has been to your commercial advantage I would hope you would take the initiative to reward it.  If I understand your post correctly he is doing the leg work of "running" the events as a TO.  If he is, that takes a lot of work off you (if you want to have events in your store that is).  What is that worth?  Only you know.

Judge in question:  Obviously I can't address this individual as he has not come up as being in this thread.  I will say, however, I really appreciate all the work that the judges I know have done to keep people tossing cards.  I love you guys and gals.....

Based on what has been said I am certain I am the judge in question barring some extreme coincidence.

Part of my intent has been on education. I do realize that the number of the regulars who will ever even attend a PTQ can be counted on one hand. However, as a DCI event the level of play should be brought up to be consistent with Regular REL. Players shouldn't be colluding, shuffling face up, and I try to teach some of the more technical rules when they show up.

Another part of my intent is to grow the community. This helps everyone. The other TOs and L2s in the area are excited about me running events because having another L2 in the area running FNMs, in thier view, will cause more kitchen table players to start going to FNMs in the local area increasing the player pool for all the local stores.

I do also want to grow as a judge myself. I saw the opportunity to judge weekly and took it. I'm trying to judge more at every level of play. From PTs to PTQs to the local FNM. I guess I'm not yet used to judging a very casual group. Perhaps my manner doesn't work well with the group already playing in your store. I'm still trying to become accustomed to it.

And I'd like to say now that yes, all the other judges who work FNMs in the area are compensated in some manner, and no two are compensated in the same way. I'll discuss the rest in private.

Note: Because the new forums like eating my posts, this is the fourth time I've written this. I'm sure I missed something.

I think it's a different beast.  On one hand, yes, I try to do the same you're doing, ie, teaching my players good tournament habits, so that they are well-prepared for more competitive tournaments. On the other hand, many players will never even go to a PTQ, so there is no point in insisting on a technically clean play they will never have use for.  FMN are, after all, social and fun events.

I think the way one delivers one's rulings makes all the difference. If they come to trust you and feel respected the way they are and play, then you've won big times.  If they don't feel comfortable in your presence or feel policed, you've lost already.

As usual, just my 2 cts.
