Hi everyone, and welcome back to You Build the Character. In this month's contest, we tackle a villain you'd almost feel sorry for, if he weren't such a ruthless, amoral coward - the Trade Federation's own Nute Gunray. You have until 11.59pm (PT) on Thursday 19 January to post your RPG stats, and any notes you want to post explaining your decisions. Once submissions have closed, all forum members will have until 11.59pm (PT) on Thursday 2 February to vote for their favourite. Whichever build receives the most votes will win. The prize for winning is having your stats enshrined in the YBtC Hall of Fame, as well as the bragging rights. The following rules apply to all submissions:
All builds must be created according to RAW, with no house rules (no single Athletics skill, no bonus feats for bloodlines etc).
You may use "unlimited" point buy for Gunray's ability scores, provided each score is between 3 and 18 at first level (before racial and age adjustments).
You are free to use material from all official Saga Edition books, up to and including The Unknown Regions.
Your stats may represent Nute Gunray at any point during his life, or serve as an overall interpretation of the character as a whole. You may even include multiple stats to represent multiple points in time, provided they are all different level versions of the same build (ie no swapping out talents or feats).
Nute Gunray is a Neimoidian, and as such uses the Neimoidian species traits provided on page 17 of Galaxy of Intrigue.
You may change your stats at any point up until submissions close, at which point any edited stats will be disqualified.
Have fun everyone, and may the Force be with you.

Is Nute Gunray a PC or an NPC? There are afterall 2 different RAW Neimoidian species traits of which one can be found in GoI.
Perhaps it might be more interesting to allow either set to be used in this contest.

When the developers have spoken in the past about "PC and NPC species", it has always been in the context that there are some species balanced for use by players, and some that haven't been tested for PCs and should be used at the GM's discretion. They've never said "PCs should use these traits, and NPCs should use this set".
As such, I feel the clear intention was that the Neimoidian species traits in GoI were intended to replace the ones found in the core rulebook. Consistency is important, so it makes no sense to have two sets of traits for the same species in use.
So to clarify, only the GoI Neimoidian stats are valid for this contest. If anyone doesn't have Galaxy of Intrigue, I will be happy to PM them with the species traits for the duration of the contest.

This builds uses 25 point buy and is meant to emphasize Gunray's political and business savvy. The build is rounded out by a few feats and talents meant for underhanded deals. Cunning Attack and Sadistic Strike hopefully convey the feel of tactics used by a craven individual who probably only beats up restrained people.

Well I finally ordered a copy of Galaxy of Intrigue, so hopefully I'll have it in time. I'm also hopign it'll have some new talents and feats and stuff I can use in a character like Nute. He seems very intrigue-oriented to me.

Viceroy Gunray as of Ep 3. I started with 25 point buy before applying species and level adjustments. I don't think I've seen his age anywhere so I just statted him as an adult. Noble is the obvious start, but I multied him into scoundrel for one reason - Fast Talker. As I was browsing the talents available to the other classes, I came across that, and I think it fits him to a T. Art of Concealment was taken more as a prereq than anything else. I was also originally thinking of going into crime lord, but non of the talents seemed to fit well. But when I saw the corporate agent PrC, Nute slipped right in. And the Corporate Clout talent just oozed Nute. So I finagled the fluff to make the Trade Federation a corporation, to which he is employed, and wal-lah. As for feats, gave him SF bureaucracy to make Cut The Red Tape more effective for him, Cunning Attack, Demoralizing Strike and Impulsive Flight fit his style, and gave him Expert Briber and Force of Personality to put that powerful charisma of his to work. Which left me a couple openings I wasn't sure what to do with, so I filled him out with Recall, to make him more powerful with those bureaucracy checks.

Here's my take on Viceroy Gunray. Looking back at the other entries, I see we have some similarities. The biggest difference with mine is that I don't see Gunray as a heroic class character. I did give him Corporate Agent levels, but apart from that he's strictly nonheroic. This reflects his utter lack of weapons training, and the fact that he's eventually cut down by a single stroke. He is strictly a behind the scenes mover and shaker, totally ill suited to combat. But he is able to resist Jedi interrogation, at least for the short term (hence Willful Resolve) and his ruthless Competitive DriveTM keeps him on top of the Trade Federation even after he's a disgraced failure.

Also, for my own entry, I forgot to put in Command Cover and Executive Leadership from Crime Lord and Corporate Agent as special abilities.
Ok, EU character: I'm think Thracken Sal-Solo (just finished the Corellian Trilogy again).

My vote goes to fairytalejedi. What a wonderful idea she had, putting him in nonheroic. That blew my mind when I saw it. Bravo, girl. Bravo.
EDIT: As for next character, maybe we could do Durge? He's not exactly in any of the movies. Or how bout another Seperatist leader? Although, wait, they're movie characters, right? Hm. How about the Republic commandos of Delta Squad? Boss, Scorch, Sev, Fixer. Or Omega Squad? Niner, Darman, Atin, Fi.

Oh Mikey, you made an awesome Nute Gunray, and your reasoning behind the build was beautiful. FairyTaleJedi, you also alchemically fabricated a convincing living and breathing Nemodian slime ball that we would all know who it was with out a name on top…but I have to cast my lot in with Sienn_Sconn.
Great job everyone!!!
As for recommendations for a future subject of the legendary YOU BUILD THE CHARACTER contests…. I got a fever… and the only prescription … is Shak Ti starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Shaak_Ti
But due to my terrible medical insurance, the off brand prescription to my fever could easily be heaping cup of Cathar… rub some Crado on it!! starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Crado

Yeah these are all really cool builds...I'll have to go with sienn_sconn as well. I like the higher CL for this character and the stats are very fitting.
For an EU character build or next time... I really like the idea of Thrackan Sal-Solo. Mostly because I'm GMing a NJO campaign right now

I'll give my voye to fairytalejedi. Sal-Solo would be interesting, but I'm hoping to see Darth Bane in the next contest (I seem to have better luck stating Force users....).

My vote goes to sienn_sconn. I like the way fairytalejedi did Nute in the Non-heroic class, but I think he would be a little bit better, being the leader of the trade federation and all.
Nice Job every one!
My vote for EU would be: Darth Bane. Second would be Bastila Shan (or if we already did that) Setal Shan.

Hello all! Just joined the forums as I came upon these incredible source of resources for my Star Wars SE game. I'm not sure the rules for voting for the YBtC (ie. if I'm allowed a vote or not), but for what its worth, I like fairytalejedi's version.

Thanks for the welcome! This forum has such an amazing amount of information for my SWSE game...
I'm enjoying the YBtC threads as well! I came upon the community while doing a search for a statted up Asaaj Ventress (want to use her in an upcoming DoD episode.)
BTW, has anyone collected all the various entries in YBtC and compiled them into a .pdf or something like that for download? Or compiled the various threads? - I personally would love to have them all to use in my various games.

I have been working on something like this, but unfortunately I'm just so snowed under at the moment that it won't appear any time soon. Hence why I still haven't added the latest YBtC winner to the Hall of Fame yet.
(Really sorry about that awaypturwpn. I think I'll try and get it done today.)
