[EDIT: now has Starship tools included.  Also contains source data from ALL sourcebooks.]

I'm the GM of our group's current campaign, and I created this tool to make it easier to:

  1. Find my party's stats quicker, without having to search through sheets of paper
  2. Run combat quickly
  3. View stat blocks for any pre-made NPC
  4. Insert any pre-made NPC into an encounter automatically
  5. Provide a tool for my players to help them quickly and easily level up and auto-calculate their new stats.
  6. Provide a tool to quickly calculate a starship's stats using PCs as the crew
  7. Provide a way to quickly and easily run starship combat [end of EDIT]

So, after more than a year of evolution, the tool has essentially become a character generator with a built-in combat aid.

Download it here. (Latest version is CharSheet&CombatTool_v209.  You may download CharSheet&CombatTool_209_example if you want to see an example of the sheets all filled out correctly.)

CharSheet&CombatTool_v209 is compatible with versions of Excel from 1993 - 2007.
CharSheet&CombatTool_v209_excel2007 is compatible with versions of Excel from 2007 - 2010.

New: There are also Word documents that allow you to export any PC/NPC statblock to Word.

I know others have had character generators out there for a very long time, and I'm sure theirs are more robust than mine, and have every single bug worked out of them.  But the advantages of mine are:

  1. It's an Excel spreadsheet that uses NO macros.
  2. It allows 16 characters to be created on the same page (well, 8 per page). A GM can just scroll up and down to see the whole party's stats and abilities all at once.
  3. All the data of all 16 characters can be linked to a Combat tab, where all the vital info is summarized in a format that allows the GM to run combat right from the laptop. A basic die rolling function is also included.
  4. Built-in instructions: almost every cell has a note attached to it if you select the cell itself, which describes how to use that cell.

I wanted to make this available in case anybody else found it useful.  (By the way, I highly recommend starting at the 'Intro' tab which gives directions for how to use the tool.)

Please let me know your feedback, both positive and negative.  Let me know which features you like best, and point out any bugs you might find.

Thanks!
Old Benn

Holy boop, this looks amazing!

I'll take a closer look when I'm not so ill, but I'm really impressed with my first glance-over Smile

Wow, thanks!  That's high praise indeed coming from the guy who is the author of THE character generator out there.  Thanks!

And I hope you feel better soon!

A new version of the tool is up.  See the link in the first post.  The latest version is CharSheet&CombatTool_v102.  This new version 1.02 contains the following updates:

  • Added error messages to indicate when an ineligible Feat has been selected (takes into account Feat pre-requisites, as well as type of Feat allowed: Starting class feat, Multiclass feat, Racial feat, Class Bonus feat, or Character feat.
  • The "Total # Talents allowed" now becomes highlighted green when you have selected fewer Talents than you are entitled to.
  • The "Total # Talents taken" now becomes highlighted red when you have selected more Talents than you are entitled to.
  • The "Total # Feats allowed" now becomes highlighted green when you have selected fewer Feats than you are entitled to.
  • The "Total # Feats taken" now becomes highlighted red when you have selected more Talents than you are entitled to.
  • Fixed a bug that produced errors in BAB and HP if higher than level 7.
  • Fixed a bug that assumed that a Racial feat was available even when the needed pre-requisites were not met.

I intend to also add messages (similar to the ones I added for Feat selection errors) for Talents, Skills, and Classes.  But that may take some time.  As before, let me know if you find any bugs.

Thanks,
Old Benn

I downloaded your tool and though I haven't actually played with it in one of our sessions just yet I really like the way it was set up.  It took a little while to get used to everything, but now that I've figured it out it's really nice.  All in all I'd have to give it something like a 9 out of 10 so good job!

Thanks for such positive feedback!  I'm glad to hear that people are liking it, and even more glad to hear that it might actually come in useful in a game session! Smile

I already know some things that I want to do to improve the character sheet portion of the tool.  But for those of you intending to use the combat portion, what do you like best about it?  What would you change?

No guarantees that I'll be able to do whatever suggestions are offered, but I'll give it a look-see.

Ok for some of the things that I like about it.  I love the dice roller program!  I also like to how it has all the dice forms you need up on there already.  Love the fact that you can easily find and read all the character's important info.  Like the fact that you added places for things like the condition track and such.  All in all it's very nice and useful.

Things that would be awesome if you could add to it.  It would be nice if you could put it some kind of ability to add already made npc's for the encounter (I'm lazy and it would be nice if I needed to change things quickly).  What I mean is if instead of having to manually typing in all the stats for stormtroopers you had a little box that came down and you selected stormtrooper and then all of his stats were already on there.  I would never ask that you do that for every type of npc just the one's that are really common (like Stormtroopers, battledroids, random generic dark jedi, etc etc.)  Also too I think it would be cool if you could add some kind of a box that came down for the condition track.  It would be nice because you could make it highlight the character's names and then it could automatically change the character's attack roles and defenses.  And maybe some kind of box that came down so you could select different status effects.

That being said  I have no experience with what you are doing so I have no idea if those things would be easy to do.  If they're not then just forget I even mentioned them.  But like I said earlier all in all it seems like it will be very useful, and now that I have everyone's stats entered in on it(finally lol) I'm going to give it a try at our next session.

Some great ideas!  I'm kicking myself for not having thought of them myself, particularly the automatic Condition Track calculation.  I will definitely do that.  I will also try to put in a few common NPCs.  As for the "status effects", I'm not exactly sure what you mean.  Could you clarify what exactly you'd be looking for there?  I have my own interpretation of what you want, but I'd rather get a clarification before I fly off half-cocked. Wink

You'll have to let me know how it goes!

Just a few ideas:

More PC slots. My regular games have 7 players, even though I seldom have more than 6 show up. Maybe with an Active/Inactive dropdown to put them on the combat sheet...

For status effects, I would suspect that would include things like prone and blinded, Force Gripped (swift action only if FG succeeded), etc.

Just on a side note, where was the discussion that set the d12 HP at 8 for DoD instead of 9?
